Russell Mulcahy takes the Bait

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2009

Russell Mulcahy has recently made the nice looking Give ‘em Hell Malone starring Thomas Jane. He also made Highlander and The Shadow amongst many other things.

Now, for his next film, Bait, he appears to have taken whole heap of high concepts and thrown into something that can only be described as a great big mess. Oh it will also be in 3-D.

In a sleepy coastal resort community, shoppers at an underground supermarket find themselves terrorized by a crazed bandit when the unimaginable occurs… A monstrous freak tsunami swallows the town. Now trapped inside a flooded supermarket with an armed maniac and rushing water threatening to entomb them all in a watery grave, the imprisoned band of survivors discover they’re not alone. The tsunami has brought some unwanted visitors from the depths. As the waters rise they must overcome not only the threat of drowning, but another threat, just as deadly and far more bloodthirsty… Packs of hungry tiger sharks.

You probably feel much the same way I do after that.

Give ‘em Hell, Malone – Two new posters

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2009

The Moving Picture posted these two posters for Russell Mulcahy’s Give ‘em Hell Malone.

Looks like some poster designer has been reading their Sin City books. I personally feel these posters are a bit naff, but I am looking forward to seeing the film.

The film stars Thomas Jane as Malone along with Ving Rhames, Elsa Pataky, Leland Orser, French Stewart and Doug Hutchison

Shatnerquake – All kinds of awesome

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2009

William Shatner? William Shatner. William Shatner!

It’s Shatner VS Shatners!

It’s the first ShatnerCon with William Shatner as the guest of honor! But after a failed terrorist attack by Campbellians, a crazy terrorist cult that worships Bruce Campbell, all of the characters ever played by William Shatner are suddenly sucked into our world. Their mission: hunt down and destroy the real William Shatner.

Featuring: Captain Kirk, TJ Hooker, Denny Crane, Rescue 911 Shatner, Singer Shatner, Shakespearean Shatner, Twilight Zone Shatner, Cartoon Kirk, Esperanto Shatner, Priceline Shatner, SNL Shatner, and – of course – William Shatner!

No costumed con-goer will be spared in their wave of destruction, no redshirt will make it out alive, and not even the Klingons will be able to stand up to a deranged Captain Kirk with a lightsaber. But these Shatner-clones are about to learn a hard lesson…that the real William Shatner doesn’t take crap from anybody. Not even himself.

It’s Shatnertastic!

Buy it here.

The Cut – Serious stuff.

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2009

Actress Keira Knightley is seen suffering a brutal assault in a new advertisement highlighting the issue of domestic violence.

The two minute TV and cinema ad, for the charity Women’s Aid, shows the star being beaten by her partner after she returns home from a film set.

It is directed by Joe Wright, who worked with Knightley on Atonement.

You can find further information on domestic abuse at http://www.womensaid.org.uk/

Ferris Bueller is Tyler Durden

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2009

I am a big fan of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Fight Club. This blew my mind when I read it over on /Film. Big warning for spoilers if you haven’t seen Fight Club.

Cool Papa Bell over on metatalk mentions the Ferris Bueller Fight Club Theory:

My favorite thought-piece about Ferris Bueller is the “Fight Club” theory, in which Ferris Bueller, the person, is just a figment of Cameron’s imagination, like Tyler Durden, and Sloane is the girl Cameron secretly loves.

One day while he’s lying sick in bed, Cameron lets “Ferris” steal his father’s car and take the day off, and as Cameron wanders around the city, all of his interactions with Ferris and Sloane, and all the impossible hijinks, are all just played out in his head. This is part of the reason why the “three” characters can see so much of Chicago in less than one day — Cameron is alone, just imagining it all.

It isn’t until he destroys the front of the car in a fugue state does he finally get a grip and decide to confront his father, after which he imagines a final, impossible escape for Ferris and a storybook happy ending for Sloane (”He’s gonna marry me!”), the girl that Cameron knows he can never have.

Cameron: My father will see what I did. I can’t hide this. He’ll come home and he’ll have to deal with me. I don’t care I really don’t. I’m just tired of being afraid.
Ferris: It’s my fault. I’ll take the heat for it. When he comes home, we’ll tell him that I did it. He hates me anyway.
Cameron: No, I’ll take it. I’ll take it.
Ferris: No, you don’t want this much heat.
Cameron: If I didn’t want it, I wouldn’t have let you take the car.
Ferris: I made you take that car.
Cameron: I could have stopped you.

Palinode goes further:

I realized that Cameron and Sloane seem to inhabit a different universe than Cameron and Ferris, or Ferris and Sloane. It’s those two who are shyly and sweetly stumbling into a relationship, and “Ferris” is the thing between them. During the parade scene, for example, Ferris vanishes, leaving the two to have an understated and genuine conversation. Then Ferris erupts from a crowd of girls on a parade float, screaming out what Cameron cannot. He is the sausage king of Chicago, Cameron’s frustrated adolescent libido made manifest in the form of a short dude with a vest.

It all fits. Oh my God! Going to have to watch Ferris again.
