Green Lantern – Concept art – Look it’s Abin Sur, Tomar Re and Kilowog, you lousy Poozer!

Posted by LiveFor on January 27, 2010

That is the current situation for the Martin Campbell directed adaption of the DC comic. Sinestro probably won’t be the main bad guy (like the comics he’ll start out as a Lantern) and Legion could well be one of the bad guys along with Hammond, but what about the other members of the Green Lantern Corp? Well it looks as if Cosmic Book News scored the first look at some concept art for Abin Sur (the Green Lantern who’s death leads to Hal Jordan getting the power ring), Tomar Re and my favourite, Green Lantern trainer, Kilowog.

The DC Database gives a quick background to Kilowog for those not up to speed on who he is (mind you due to the convoluted DC continuity it may mean nothing to you if you’ve never read the comics):

Bolovax Vik was one of the most crowded planets in the universe; it had 16 billion residents with a communal mind. Kilowog was a geneticicist and one of Bolovax’s most brilliant minds. After the previous Lantern, Branwill, died, Kilowog was chosen to be a member of the Green Lantern Corps. It was a great honor, but it meant leaving Bolovax and going into space on missions; this was tantamount to exile for a Bolovaxian. Nevertheless, Kilowog carried out his duties with pride. He would go on to be one of the Corps’ best recruiters and trainers.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Bolovax Vik was destroyed. His ring automatically protected Kilowog, but not his people. Acting quickly, he placed all 16 billion life energies into his ring. By sheer force of his will they survived until Kilowog found a suitable planet to release his people. Sadly, the planet was soon destroyed by Sinestro. Kilowog could not rescue them again. He was now alone for good

Cosmic Book News also have the story from the 2008 Green Lantern script. It makes interesting reading but as we don’t yet know whether this will be the exact script they are using there could well be major spoilers involved.

The concept art for all three looks a lot like the comic book characters which is a good thing.

Concept art is always great to see but the final look depends upon who will be working on the effects. Variety have the news that Karen Goulekas (The Day After Tomorrow) Kent Houston (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Jim Berney (I Am Legend) will be in charge of making the effects look real. Sony Pictures Imageworks will also be the lead visual effects studio on the film. They worked on Watchmen and Superman Returns. All of those films had their flaws, but in the main they had excellent special effects so Green Lantern should look splendid.

Green Lantern is due out on 17th June 2011.

The question is who will voice Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar Re?

A Boy and His Dog – Classic sci-fi tale to be remade as an animated feature

Posted by LiveFor on January 27, 2010

Harlan Ellison’s post-apocalyptic short story, “A Boy and His Dog,” is to be remade by David Lee Miller (My Suicide). According to Quiet Earth Miller worked as Second Assistant Director on the Roger Corman produced disaster film, Avalanche, in 1978.

The film is currently in pre-production with a tentative 2012 release date, but it’s official.

You may well have seen the 1975 live action film that featured Don Johnson (Miami Vice) as the boy who communicates telepathically with his dog as they scavenge for food and sex, and they stumble into an underground society where the old society is preserved. It then gets weirder from there.

From what I remember of that version it had a cool post apocalyptic look and a nice little twist. Below is the trailer for the 1975 film.

An animated version should be excellent.

Akira – Fan film of the classic anime

Posted by LiveFor on January 26, 2010

Cool little film based on the very cool anime. Excellent and actually makes me more interested in seeing a big screen live action version of the film – although that keeps getting put through development hell.

Have a watch and let me know what you think.

Thor – Samuel L Jackson is in it, but no one has told him

Posted by LiveFor on January 26, 2010

Samuel L Jackson was Nick Fury in Iron Man and the forthcoming sequel. The character is also set to appear in Captain America and The Avengers film. However, after Iron Man 2 he is set to appear in Thor and the cast lists show Samuel L Jackson.

However, when speaking to MTV he mentioned that he still hasn’t been told about when and where.

“Nobody’s told me anything,” Jackson laughed when asked about the “Thor” role. “I was reading the trades last week and I saw the cast list. My name was in it, so maybe I am doing something that I don’t know about and I’ll hear about it soon.”

Jackson confessed that he’s heard very little about the plan for his character ever since the Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainment.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” he said. “Since Disney’s bought the franchise, I have no idea what Marvel told them or even if my deal with Marvel is still valid.”

Even so, he said he’s confident that Fury can fit into the world established by Branagh’s “Thor.”

“It all depends on where they find him,” he said. “If they’re dealing with that particular timeline… Hey, they’re shooting it in Santa Fe, it’s not like they’re shooting it in Norway.”

How crazy is that. He had to read about it in the trades! Sounds to me as if it has all been set up and the different people have spoken about it and signed it off without actually giving him a call.

Imagine if his schedule wasn’t clear and he couldn’t do it. They’d have to get the Hoff in again.

Black Panther – Animated series intro

Posted by LiveFor on January 26, 2010

Here is the opening for the new Marvel Animated show, Black Panther and I like the look of it.
It premiered this month on Australian children’s channel ABC3 (no idea why it would premiere there but good on the Aussies for getting it). Djimon Hounsou voices Black Panther, king of the African nation of Wakanda and a cool kick-ass character.

Along with Hounsou as T’Challa, Stan Lee provides the voice of General Wallace, JB Blanc voices The Black Knight and Batroc, Kerry Washington voices Princess Shuri and Jill Scott provides the voice of X-Men member Storm.

I love the John Romita Jr style art work. No idea when it is out in the US or UK but are there any Australians reading this who have seen it? Is it as good as it looks?

Cold Space – Samuel L Jackson’s new sci-fi comic book

Posted by LiveFor on January 25, 2010

It is not the first time Samuel L Jackson has appeared in a comic book. He was the basis for The Ultimates version of Nick Fury (which led to him being Nick Fury in the Iron Man movie) and now his likeness is in a new comic called Cold Space. This time he has co-written it with Eric Calderon and art by Jeremy Rock, to be published in April by Boom! Studios.

Calderon and Jackson worked on Afro Samurai and this comic sounds cool – It follows the man character, an on-the-run-outlaw crashlanded on a planet in the middle of a civil war.
