Interesting news or rather a rumour for the big bads of the next Spider-Man film.
Movieline has confirmed with sources close to the film that Sam Raimi’s sequel is circling John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway to play Spider-Man’s adversaries.
If negotiations proceed according to plan, Malkovich will be playing Spider-Man’s nemesis the Vulture, who packs a punch despite his advanced age.
In the comic Adrian Toomes was born in Staten Island, New York. He is a former electronics engineer who was once the business partner of a man named Gregory Bestman; Bestman handled the finances while Toomes, the inventions. One day, after creating a flight harness, Toomes eagerly rushed into Bestman’s office to share the happy news. However, Bestman was not there, and Toomes discovered that Bestman had secretly been embezzling funds and that Toomes had no legal recourse. Enraged, Toomes wrecked the business, discovering that the harness also granted him superhuman strength. He then decided to turn to crime professionally as the Vulture. His wings are as sharp as swords and can be used as projectile weapons. They will replenish themselves so he can maintain flying abilities.
The Vulture employs a special harness of his own design that allows him to fly; his flight is directed by a pair of wings worn on his arms. The harness also endows him with enhanced strength and (according to some sources) increases his lifespan. Although Toomes is advanced in age, he is a strong fighter and a remorseless killer.
I think Malkovich is an excellent choice to play. However, for Spider-Man 3 Raimi had originally wanted to use the Vulture but was sort of forced to use Venom and I think you can see how the Vulture would have worked in the final scenes of the third film.
Anne Hathaway is supposedly the top choice for Felicia Hardy, who’d been long-rumored as one of the new characters in this installment. (Other names bandied about for the role included Julia Stiles, Rachel McAdams, and Romola Garai.) However, unlike in the comic books, this Felicia Hardy doesn’t transform into the Black Cat. Instead, Raimi’s Felicia will become a brand-new superpowered figure called the Vulturess.
This is all still very much rumour and I’m just not getting the whole Felicia Hardy as Vulturess thing. Why take an established character from the Spidey-verse and then make them a different villain? Plus The Vulturess?!?! What kind of name is that?
What are your thoughts on the possible casting and what will this mean for Dylan Baker’s possible turn as The Lizard? Is the Vulture the right villain to use? Will we eventually see the Sinister Six?

In a recent Q&A following a screening of Trick ‘r Treat (I’ve got that on preorder – can’t wait), Dylan Baker did reveal that he will be reprising the role of Curt Connors (the one-armed scientist who would one day become the reptilian villain The Lizard) in Spider-Man 4:
Baker said that he had just gotten his first call concerning Spider-Man 4 that very day. Baker appeared in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 as Dr. Curt Connors, a professor at Empire State University.
When Dougherty ribbed him about “just appearing in the background” Baker said that, basically, that’s what he’d be doing. It was unclear if they were being truthful or if, in fact, Dr. Connors would become supervillain The Lizard in this fourth entry in the film series. During their riffing, Dougherty used the phrase “cocktease for another year” as to whether or not we’d see The Lizard.
I really do hope they use the Lizard in the new film as that could lead to some Raimi horror style shenanigans like he had with Doc Ock. Plus it would be a good excuse to bring in Kraven the Hunter to track down the Lizard and Spidey has to protect Dr Connors.
Sam Raimi has also said that Bruce Campbell will have a “Meatier” role in the new film. Other sites are saying this could mean he will be playing a villain such as Mysterio. However, I reckon he will be playing a butcher who interacts with Peter Parker at some point in the film.
Do you want the Lizard in the next Spider-Man film? If not him then what other villains would be good to see in it?
Also if Bruce was to play a villain which one could it be? Maybe the Chameleon and that could tie up all his previous appearances in the Spider-Man films.

Director Terry Kinney’s delightfully poignant and bittersweet comedy poses the question: How much is a good memory worth? That’s the question that faces newspaper editor Cooper (Matthew Broderick) after a debilitating concussion takes him from the political pages to comic strip detail. Looking for answers, he travels home to Missouri where his now senile Uncle Rollie (Alan Alda) is on the verge of losing his home. When a valuable baseball card is thrown into the mix, these two men along with a motley group of hometown friends, including Cooper’s high school sweetheart, Charlotte (Virginia Madsen) , head to a memorabilia expo to make the deal of a century, diving headfirst into a snakepit of slick salesmen, crooked dealers, and rabid fans revealing that there are some things in life that you can’t put a price on.
Diminished Capacity also stars Dylan Baker, Louis C.K. and Bobby Cannavale in hilarious supporting roles.

Sam Raimi has been talking to MTV about the new Spider-Man movies. Looks like things are moving forward on them. I just hope they are better than the third one.
“I’m really excited about Spider-Man, and I’m hoping to direct it,” he cautioned. “I don’t have a script yet, but production would start probably by March of 2010, I’m guessing. It sounds like a long time away, but we need a script first, and a lot of pre-production has to take place.”
The filmmaking legend also revealed to us that there is a lot of truth behind rumors that he might shoot the next two “Spider-Man” films at the same time. “That had been talked about,” he said, deferring to the head of his studio. “It’s Amy Pascal’s decision. I don’t think it has been decided yet, and she’s the one that’s really going to make that decision; I’m really curious myself.”
By his own admission, “Spider-Man 3” was an exhaustive film to shoot, but Raimi is confident he can handle the double duty. “It would be a real endurance test, probably only Peter Jackson knows how hard something like that would be,” he marveled, hinting that “4” and “5” would be very closely linked in storyline. “If Tobey and me, and all the producers, like the story for two pictures and Amy wanted to do it, then we would do it. It just hasn’t been written yet.”
Finally, Raimi offered comment on the wishes of fans (and yours truly) to finally let Dylan Baker’s storyline come to fruition. “He’s a great actor, and I think one day The Lizard’s story will be told,” he teased, referring to Baker’s Curt Connors character. “I don’t know if it will be this one or not. I just don’t know. I’m definitely hoping to work with Dylan in the picture. I just don’t know who the villain is yet.”
What do you think of the news? Do you want to see the Lizard as the big bad or someone else? How could they improve upon the third movie?
