Masi Oka’s Defenders

Posted by LiveFor on June 8, 2009

DreamWorks is set for the family adventure project The Defenders, conceived by Heroes actor Masi Oka, with D.J. Caruso in negotiations to direct. Gary Whitta will write the script, that will be produced by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story centers on a group of teenagers from around the world who are involved in a multiplayer video game, each unaware of who they really are behind the cover of their consoles and avatars. They are forced to come together for a real adventure, becoming inadvertent heroes in the process.

It sounds a bit like the Dot Robot story by Jason Bradbury (The Gadget Show).

DreamWorks will develop a video game simultaneously with the feature.

Oka, who will exec produce, came up with idea while playing MMORPGs — massively multiplayer online role-playing games, in that world’s parlance.

You can be whoever you want to be,” he said. “The question came to me: What if you had to live up to the person you created in the virtual world?”

The pair was looking for “the kinds of movies that Amblin used to do, that combined an innocence with the adventure,” Orci said.

Added Kurtzman, “We are staunch believers there are ways to update the tone of these movies.”

Oka and Whitta, who also plays online games, bonded over their love of the medium’s “World of Warcraft.” Kurtzman and Orci ensnared Caruso, with whom they worked on the 2008 thriller Eagle Eye.

Something sounds a little off about this concept to me. Kids play a video game, stuff happens so they have to meet up in the real World and have to be like their characters – Have I got that right? It’s just not grabbing me at the moment.

John Glover as Samson Gray in Heroes

Posted by LiveFor on March 10, 2009

I’m a big fan of John Glover (Lionel Luthor in Smallville, Scrooged, Gremlins 2, Brimstone and many more TV shows and films). Here is a look at him just out of makeup on the set of Heroes where he plays Samson Gray, the father to one of the main characters. I just think it is a really great photo.

Astropia vs Heroes

Posted by LiveFor on March 10, 2009

Filmmakers in Iceland made a film called Astropia. It premiered in Iceland in 2007 and was shown at last year’s Fantastic Fest. It is all about a young woman who, having never worked, has to get a job in her local comic book / role playing shop

Now a recent episode in season 3 of Heroes has a story line where Claire (Hayden Panettier) has to get a job in a comic shop.

Do you notice any similarities?

The producers of Astropia are not very happy and are, according to Twitch, thinking of suing NBC for plagarism, as they are trying to get the film remade in the US. Either way it is all publicity for the film.

What is your verdict? Coincidence? Plagarism? Homage?

XIII coming to the small screen – Will it be Bourne-lite?

Posted by LiveFor on December 10, 2008

MTV have the news: NBC has announced this morning that they will be adapting the classic Belgian political thriller, “XIII” for a two-part television mini-series, scheduled to air February 8 and 15. The television event will pack a powerhouse of geek-credible actors, including former Batman Val Kilmer, Stephen Dorff from “Blade,” Stephen McHattie from “Watchmen” and Jessalyn Gilsig from “Heroes.”

“XIII” follows the adventures of an amnesiac assassin, who is being hunted down for questioning in the murder of the first female President of the United States. There have been several attempts by American publishers to adapt the comic stateside — most recently by the Dabel Bros. and Marvel — but none have been as successful as the popular video game adaptation

XIII was created by Van Hamme, but I only know it through the game which was pretty cool and had great cell shaded graphics. The basic plot has always reminded me of the Bourne scenario (guy wakes up on a beach with no memory, realises he can beat the crap out of pretty much anyone and he has a XIII tattoo) so this could well end up with a Bourne kind of vibe to it. This is no bad thing for a TV show in my opinion. Will we get fat Kilmer or thin Kilmer for the show? Which one of the actors mentioned will play the assassin? Also will it be set in the 60s like the comic or have a modern day setting?

Peter Petrelli Wants to be Robin

Posted by LiveFor on September 2, 2008

Not content with having all the cool powers in Heroes, Milo Ventimiglia has told Showbiz Spy that he wants to be Robin in a Batman movie if the character was used.

The 31-year-old actor — who is dating his Heroes co-star Hayden Panettiere — is desperate to play the caped-crusader’s famed sidekick if the part should come up in a future outing to Gotham City.

He explains, “I always thought I would make a great Robin.

“I would love to be Christian Bale’s sidekick in Batman. Even when I was younger I never wanted to be Batman.

“I have always wanted to be Robin. To this day I still think that would be pretty cool.”

This is great. Some sweet editing of Heroes to the Smashing Pumpkins track used on the Watchmen trailer. Works really well.
