Stephen Chow is the great actor / director behind films such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Chow had been due to appear as Kato in The Green Hornet film, but that all fell apart. News on the grapevine is that he is about to make his English speaking debut in a film called Tai Chi. Twitch had the news that this is to be a remake of the classic Bruce Lee film, Enter the Dragon.
If this new story is more than a rumour then the remake will co-star Jack Black and Anne Hathaway.
Channel News Asia says that Tai Chi will have a $60 million budget and will be produced by the China Film Group Corporation and “an unnamed American film company.”
The film tells the story of a Chinese migrant in the US (played by Chow) who works as a dishwasher in Chinatown and hides his skills as a Tai Chi master. He is forced to stand up to gangsters who oppress his fellow migrants and later gets invited to start martial arts schools to share his knowledge.
Chow, a big fan of the late kung fu legend Bruce Lee, reportedly went to great lengths to make sure the script was perfect. He continously refined the script for almost two years and pushed back the production date.
The only other recent news about an Enter the Dragon remake was for one starring Rain (Ninja Assassin). That one is by writer/director Kurt Sutter and titled Awaken the Dragon but things have been quiet for that one.
I still see no need to remake Enter the Dragon, but if anyone is going to do it then Chow could just be the one to do it. I do hope that he doesn’t try and make it a comedy though as that just wouldn’t seem right. As for Black and Hathaway’s involvement I could see it working, but having Black involved would again raise the prospect of this remake have some comedy elements to it. Mind you part of me would want to see him as the Jim Kelly character with the big afro, but that is a very small part of me and even that knows it is wrong. If Black was going to play one of the main characters then I suppose he has more of a resemblance to John Saxon.
If this does happen would you be happen to see a Stephen Chow version of Enter the Dragon? What would have to be in it to work and who could play the villainous Han?

Producer Joel Silver was recently promoting Ninja Assassin when he spoke about a whole heap of comic book movies and the great detective may return quite quickly.
Lobo – Lobo is a DC Comics character for mature audiences, an alien antihero who exterminated his own race. He has super strength, healing and smell and frequently swears with words like “frag” and “bastich.” Silver wouldn’t reveal whether the big alien Lobo would be created on a computer or with prosthetic makeup, but he has already commissioned a promising test. “We just did a big test, and the studio just saw it, so we’re seeing how we’re going to pull that off,” Silver said. “It’s up to the studio to make the decision what they want to do, so I’m waiting to see if they want to make that movie.”
Sgt. Rock – Also from DC Comics, Sgt. Rock is a World War II soldier with superhuman endurance and strength, a crack shot who can bring down planes with a machine gun. I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence has impressed Silver with a way to make a new movie about Rock. “Francis has got a real vision for this thing, and if we can pull it off it’ll be a great movie,” Silver said.
Swamp Thing – In September, Silver announced plans to make a new Swamp Thing movie in 3-D. Silver confirmed that the project is moving along but probably won’t be ready in time for Halloween 2010. “I don’t think it’ll be that soon, but we’re working on it,” Silver said. “It’s happening, so we’ll see what happens. I mean, it’s something I’m excited about doing, and I want to hopefully pull that off, so we’re working on that now.”
Sherlock Holmes 2 – The new update of Sherlock Holmes opens Christmas Day, but Warner Brothers president of production Jeff Robinov has already ordered a sequel. “There’s an article in Entertainment Weekly this week about Sherlock,” Silver said. “[Robinov's] quote said, ‘If the movie’s a hit, I want to get the sequel going as fast as possible.’ So he just came right out there and said that. I would have just waited until the movie opened first, but he wanted people to know that’s what they want to do. In fact, we have a script being written, and if the picture does work, you’ll be seeing another one, I hope, pretty soon.” Silver added that the first Sherlock, starring Robert Downey Jr., clocks in at just over two hours.

Here is Rain from Ninja Assassin sort of saying he is still thinking about the Enter the Dragon remake. First mentioned this back in August.
UPDATE: Awaken the Dragon screenplay writer Kurt Sutter got in touch with ScreenRant, where he questions the claims that Rain is in line for this role.
I just wanted to update you on my status with the “dragon” remake. Unfortunately, the project was a victim of the writer’s strike and I was forced to abandon it because of my commitment to “Sons of Anarchy”. If Rain is attached, I am no longer involved in the project, nor is my original pitch (neo-noir) valid. Honestly, and I could be wrong, but I find it hard to believe that any actor is attached to this project because as far as I know it has stalled in development at Warner Bros. I fear you could be the victim of wishful self-promotion. The next time someone interviews Rain, they should ask if he’s read the script or met with the director.
Thanks to Head Hero of the brill Movies: Past, Present and Future for letting me know.

Back in August I posted the news that James McTeigue (Ninja Assassin) was working on a film following the last five days of Edgar Allan Poe called The Raven. First Showing recently caught up with him and asked him for some more info about the film.
It’s about a serial killer loose in 1850s Baltimore. And as his motif, he kills people the way Poe kills them in his books. Sounds cool, but will it be more horror or action based?
“Yea there’s a couple of [action] set pieces, I wouldn’t say it’s action [though], it’s more a thriller. It’s about Poe trying… At each murder that he does, the killer leaves a clue, and basically Poe is set against the clock to find someone before they die. So each murder that he does, he leaves a clue for him. So I would say it’s like a thriller, a dark thriller. Sort of in the vein of of that book The Alienist, in that kind of vein.”
He was then asked if there was any truth in the rumour that he was involved in a new Superman film along with the Wachowski Brothers (or are they brother and sister now?):
“Maybe some truth to… I’ve had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment, I think they’re still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together.”
“I think I would be interested in doing it if they let me do it the way I wanted to do it. I would say that, if you take the Richard Donner Supermans and the last Superman [from Bryan Singer], I think that Superman is probably ripe for a bit of a change up. I think society has changed around the core idea of what Superman was.”
“And I’m not saying you do the ubiquitous dark Superman, I’m not saying that… I’m just saying that I think there are some things that you could excise from the Superman mythology that people would get into it, if you took the world that he was in and changed that a bit, and maybe even project that into the future a bit. I think you don’t really have to play into the origin story anymore. I think there’s a whole bunch of things you could do to make that film more alive and exciting again.”
It definitely sounds as if he has the right mind set to breath new life into the Superman films. I so want to see a decent Superman film with lots of big fights, super science and all round coolness.

Enter the Dragon, the 1973 martial arts classic that put Bruce Lee on the map. It is pretty much spot on.
Now Latino Review has found out that Warner Bros. Pictures is considering Korean megastar Rain(Ninja Assassin – Check out the clip from that film) for the lead role in writer/director Kurt Sutter’s Awaken the Dragon, which is a noir-style remake of the original.
Apparantly it is a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs.
The original film starred Lee as a martial artist who is drafted by law enforcement to participate in a martial arts tournament and infiltrate a drug smuggling operation run from the host’s heavily guarded island.
Ninja Assassin is looking pretty cool, so Rain could definitely do the martial arts for the film and it sounds different enough that it may just work. How do you feel about the news?
UPDATE: Here is some footage of Rain talking about the Enter the Dragon role.
