Work is slowly moving on with a new version of Dune directed by Pierre Morel (Taken). However, a person by the name of Sasha Burrow has a project to revamp the David Lynch version (which I love) by giving it all new special effects. Kind of like the Star Wars Special Editions only with more love.
This is a project I have been slowly working on over the last few years with the goal of ultimately replacing many of the “outdated” special effects shots in David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune.
The project initially began as an endeavor to build a “proper” ornithopter – one with flapping wings, that neither the movie or the mini-series managed to achieve. However, with the advent of the “fan-edit” the scope of the project has expanded with the goal of updating the effects in all those places in the movie where I feel things could be significantly “improved.”
Although I am currently working on this by Myself, it’s a large undertaking and if there is anyone interested in helping this project along, feel free to contact Me – We might actually be able to get this project completed with a few more skilled and enthusiastic people!
Let me tell you they have done an incredible amount of work. Diagrams, CGI tests, pre vis bits, mock up for DVD packaging and more. Absolutely incredible and one day it would be so good to see the updated version. Head on over to the site for more info on it. Good luck on the project.

Still trying to get my head round the adaption of Bill and Ted vs Death’s favourite game and the fact it has aliens in it, but it is sounding a bit better with every new piece of news. Last I heard Jeremey Renner (The Hurt Locker, S.W.A.T.) was in talks to be the lead.
IGN spoke to great comic book artist, Jock (The Losers). As well as doing concept art for the new Judge Dredd film he’s also busy working on the look of the aliens for Peter Berg’s film.
“I met Peter when he was attached to The Losers and have done bits and piece for him since then. I did some work for his Dune adaptation which has now gone on to Pierre Morel.” said Jock “When he moved onto Battleship, rather than having two human forces, one is an alien force, and they needed designing and concepts done. I’m currently doing costumes for the aliens and their head-gear. I’ve also been doing a lot of key-frames of environments and events.”
Peter Berg spoke about the film and the aliens a while back. Jock confirms some of the things mentioned then. “They are aliens called ‘Regents’ and there is a battle, hence it’s called Battleship, but they didn’t come here to have a battle.” He continues, “Pete’s got such a great sensibility, he wants stuff to be raw and real and aggressive and frightening and hard and tough. There are different characters in the alien race that will have different service to the film, but generally they are totally new. Not really harking back to anything, but more trying to give Pete what he wants and what he’s trying to achieve.”
Jock added, “Something struck me after working on this for a few months — they are going to make a new version of the game with the aliens and the alien ships. There’s a folder online and that’s for Hasbro, so some action figures of what I’ve designed would be kind of cool!”
Can’t wait to see some of the concept art for the film as I love Jock’s work. Anyone else getting a bit more excited about Battleship?

Possibly great news for the new adaption of Dune. Peter Berg had been attached to this for a while, but he jumped ship to direct Battleship.
Now, according to EW Pierre Morel (Taken, From Paris With Love, District 13) is heading to Arrakis.
Paramount has found a new director for its remake of the sci-fi classic Dune, after Peter Berg dropped off the project in October. The studio has hired Taken helmer Pierre Morel to oversee the movie. Paramount is currently looking for a new writer to incorporate Morel’s vision of the project into the original draft by Quantum of Solace scribe Josh Zetumer. Morel plans to make a very faithful adaptation of the 1965 book by Frank Herbert. The movie is a high priority for Paramount’s production chief Adam Goodman. Kevin Misher and Richard Rubinstein are producing.
Taken was one of the best action films of the past few years so Morel has got the goods for a more actioney type of Dune. However, I am not sure if he has the sci-fi chops for such an epic tale. Mind you I still have a soft spot for David Lynch’s version.
The question is whether they will try and do the whole book in one film again or if it will be broken up into a few?
What do you think about Morel taking on Arrakis? Who should go all blue eyed and star in it? Should it be in 3D?
The Spice must flow.

On the Official Avatar Myspace Site, director Bryan Singer (X-Men) dropped a major announcement about one of his next projects.
“I just yesterday signed a deal to do an X-Men: First Class origins picture, which is kind of cool. I’m very excited.”
X-Men: First Class is expected to inject a next-gen sensibility into the superhero series. – The studio has been leaning toward using the younger characters introduced in the previous films in future installments –teenagers with powers taught at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning.
They will most likely draw from elements of the Marvel Comic of the same name, launched in 2006, and enlist such characters as Iceman, Rogue, Angel, Colossus, Jubilee and Shadowcat, who have appeared prominently or made cameos in previous films.
To be honesy I am just not sure whether I am excited about the First Class films and the fact Singer is returning. I was so let down with Superman Returns and watching X-Men and X-Men 2 I just feel they have dated quite a bit plus the stories they tell are so brief it just makes me go “meh!”
I would have liked to see a new director with a fresh take on the subject matter – imagine Edgar Wright or Pierre Morel’s take on an X-Men film.
