X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Early review. Lots of spoilers.

Posted by LiveFor on March 11, 2009

We Are Movie Geeks have this early review of the Wolverine film. It has loads of spoilers so it is in invisotext. Highlight it with your mouse if you want to know what happens in the film. It pretty much has the whole plot here.

OK, so I’m not a movie reviewer, so forgive me if this is not as concise as a professional review might be. Having said that, I also don’t know how much of the plot and “ohhhh, holy shit!!!” moments you want to know, possibly spoiling it. But feel free to edit and take out anything you don’t want to have spoiled.

The movie itself looks amazing. Lots of cool sets and special effects, it’s edited very well, the pacing is perfect and the running time is right on. It actually leaves you wanting more, and really, isn’t that the “nirvana” that most action movies hope to arrive at for the audience?

The back story of Logan (aka Wolverine) is set up pretty good. It’s not too much and it explains Logan’s motivation from childhood. As a young boy, something terrible happens, his “mutant” power is revealed, and he and his brother must flee.

Fast forward to 1970-something Viet Nam. Logan and his brother Victor (aka Sabretooth) are soldiers and Victor has become an irrational bully who has no problem killing anyone that gets in his way. This leads to both of them being locked up in the brig for a very long time. Enter a higher up military officer (Stryker) who offers to get them out of there if they agree to join his special ops team. This elite team is made up of other mutants, all with various different, really cool “powers.” Mission after mission goes by, with Victor really taking a liking to the violence and developing an appetite for killing. Logan, on the other hand, draws the line at being ordered to kill innocent people and decides to walk away. Off he goes to live a quiet life in the Canadian wilderness with his girlfriend/wife/whoever

Cut to various former members of the special ops team being killed. No reason is apparent. The former leader of the group (Stryker) finds Logan in his now lumberjack career and tells him about this. Logan says thanks for the warning but I can take care of myself. As he returns to his work, he senses something is not right and then notices bloody claw marks on a tree. He runs to find his girlfriend/wife/whoever lying dead with gashes across her throat. Victor has killed her. Now its personal and Logan flies into a rage. He finds Victor and a battle ensues. But they basically have the same “powers” so it’s impossible for one to beat the other. Victor flees and Logan agrees to let Stryker help him become more powerful, and therefore able to go kill Victor. Cut to the “lab” scene from the trailer, new steel blades ready to do some serious damage. I don’t want to give it away, but one of my favorite parts of the movie is when we find out where the name “Wolverine” comes from… oooh I just got goosebumps thinking about it… haha. HUGE SPOILER: “the crazy mad scientist, Stryker, is kidnapping them all (mutants) and keeping them prisoners because he is takin their DNA to make a Super Mutant…one guy with ALL the powers…IT’S RYAN REYNOLD’S CHARACTER, Wade Wilson / Deadpool….its so creepy when you see him at the end!!”

This is where I will just say that the movie gets more awesome than it already is. The fight sequences are great, the story takes twists and turns, and the “holy shit!” moments make you want to cheer. I will see this movie again on opening weekend with a full audience of fans. It is THAT kind of movie. Loved it, loved it, loved it.

And one more thing…there are things after the credits..so stick around, for those of you who jump up right at the fade out.
UPDATE:

I got another email from my source and he wants to add more stuff to this so that everyone knows he really has seen the movie..this DOES INCLUDE SPOILERS!

“for anyone doubting my review:(highlight the text below to read:)
Deadpool/Wade is part of the elite team that they, Logan and Victor, joined and he’s kind of the comic relief. When they’re traveling on missions together, he never shuts up and everyone is always telling him to SHUT UP…a real know-it-all. He gets into it with Wolverine and Sabretooth and they almost come to blows and he takes out his weapon ,a big silver sword, saber. Logan, who’s not yet called Woverine, diffuses the situation and calms everyone down-Victor and Wade. (This is so we establish what Wade’s weapon is for later on in the movie). Beak, (Dominic Monaghan) who uses electricity, is the first one TO DIE. Victor kills him
At the end of the movie, when Wolverine finds out that Stryker and the scientists have been taking out the DNA from the mutants, who they all now have in cages, he goes to free them all. The other member of the team, “Wraith” (played by Will.I.Am) keeps telling him the mutants are being held captive in the lab which is on the island – but Wraith doesn’t know where this Island is…The only mutant to know is the one person who’s ever escaped – which is Gambit. Gambit then agrees to take Wolverine there and as they’re flying in Gambit’s plane….the wide shot reveals!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS THE FAMED THREE-MILE ISLAND….THE NUCLEAR REACTORS AND ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wolverine is also now indestructable because of all the modifications that Stryker made on him back when Stryker convinced Wolverine to go after Sabretooth – all because S.T. killed Logan’s girlfriend.
When Wolverine shows up and starts kickin ass…the SuperMutant is not ready yet, but Stryker has no choice, he has to release him….and that’s when you figure out its Ryan Reynold’s character…Wade/Deadpool/SuperMutant. ITS ALL CRAZY…He has no hair, bald, his eyes are red and sunken in so he can shoot the fire outta his eyes….HE HAS EVERY MUTANT POWER…..AND….HIS MOUTH IS SEWN SHUT!!! Wolverine says, “Well Wade, looks like somebody finally shut you up” This is the reference back to the beginning when all the other mutants would tell Wade to shut up.
SO when Wolverine goes after him, SuperMutant/Deadpool/Wade’s trusty sword automatically comes outta his fist much like Wolverine’s blade. Now its a fight…..Deadpool has ALL the powers in this epic battle…he can disappear like The Wraith, he can shoot fire outta his eyes – pretty much indestructable. Wolverine is basically getting his ass kicked.
SO then, they’ve gone from inside the lab …and moved the fight to on top of the reactor.Deadpool is destroying everything…reactors, the everything is going down cuz he’s shooting everything with his eyes. Then, Deadpool punches him so hard Wolverine goes over the side of the reactor and in a SPLIT second, a hand reaches down to save him….AND ITS SABRETOOTH….TO SAVE THE DAY……AND YELLS, “NOBODY KILLS YOU BUT ME, BROTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
(Sabretooth has been there the whole time, but wasn’t fighting – he was just rounding up all the mutants for Stryker). After he pulls him up to the roof, Sabretooth says to Wolverine “Back-to-back” and they position themselves back to back so they can have eyes on both sides. Since they’re both attacking Deadpool, Wolverine, with one swipe, cuts Deadpool’s head clean off. Sabretooth then turns and says, “You know this doesn’t mean we’re still not enemies” and takes off…
Then, Wolverine, has to go after Stryker and free the other mutants. But unbeknownst to Wolverine, Stryker has a magic bullet and as he’s loading the gun with it, the other scientists in the lab say, “you can’t kill Wolverine with that”. Stryker then says “Yeah I know, but if I shoot him in the head, it will erase his memory.” (Remember, Wolverine never knew where he came from).
So as Wolverine is helping to free the mutants, Stryker goes up to him and shoots him in the head….Wolverine drops to the floor as if dead. Stryker then takes off. Cut back to WOlverine fluttering his eyes open…HE”S NOT DEAD…… The military, the shitstorm is coming after what they saw what was happening at Three-Mile-Island. Gambit runs over to tell Wolverine “WE GOTTA GO!!!” and Wolverine looks up and says, “Who are you?!?!?! Wher the hell am I?!?!??!” Gambit says “I’m a friend..you gotta trust me….We have to get outta here”
CUT TO:
A Dark forest…the escaped mutants are running for their lives…..and they all stop and you see the back of abald head…and you hear Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) voice only, saying “You’re all safe…come with me”
FADE TO BLACK!!!”

X-Men Origins: Wolverine – The Weapon XI mystery cleared up

Posted by LiveFor on March 6, 2009

Previously on Live for Films: The X-Men Origins: Wolverine Trailer was released and we saw a bit more of Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool. There was also a bald mutant guy with a claw on each hand, eye beams and no mouth. In my previous post I said this was Weapon XI played by Scott Adkins so it wouldn’t be Deadpool. I thought he had all the mutant powers grafted onto him. I was half right.

Topless Robot, via their new inside source, have cleared this up and this is what their source told them about Weapon XI and some other mutants we may see (Spoilers Ahead).

• Ryan Reynolds shows up for 10 minutes in the beginning of the film. He’s part of Stryker’s team, and his mutant ability is mostly being a badass with swords, cutting bullets and the like. He is called Wade Wilson during this period.
• Stryker’s big plan (or one of ‘em) is to make Weapon XI, a mutant with a shit-ton of mutant powers.
• Stryker uses Wilson’s body as the mutant power receptacle, and because of the scarring (I’m not sure whether that’s from a previous fight, or as a result of all the mutant powers getting packed into him), Weapon XI is played by Scott Adkins. Weapon XI appears for about ten minutes near the film’s end, and has the claws seen above (a la Wolverine), Cyclops’ optic blast, Wraith’s teleportation ability, and Wolverine’s healing factor, too. Also, his mouth is indeed sewn shut.
• Just like Weapon X is given the name “Wolverine,” Weapon XI is given the name “Deadpool.”

Apparently, there’s a cameo by a certain Professor at the end of the movie. When Stryker’s compound is falling apart and Wolverine is leading young Emma Frost and Cyclops out of the building, Cyclops suddenly knows the way out. When they get to the door, standing there — oh yes, standing — is Charles Xavier, controlling wee Cyclops’ mind like he’ll be doing several billion more times in the future. He’s apparently not played by Patrick Stewart, by the way. Weird.

Also: Despite what the trailer would have you believe, most of the other mutants are only cameos as well. Gambit only has about 10 minutes of screentime, for instance. Just like the Marvel Universe, it’s Wolverine’s show.

I think it sucks that Ryan Reynolds doesn’t get to be the wisecracking Merc with a Mouth we know and love. However, it could be a good setup for a Deadpool film. I am glad that it will be Wolverine’s film and not loads of people fighting for time on screen.

Deadpool fans what do you think of the news?

Deadpool or Weapon XI?

Posted by LiveFor on March 6, 2009

The recent trailer for X-Men Origins: Wolverine had more footage of the weird bald mutant with the metal claw, cyclops eyebeam and markings on his skin. Is it Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) after going through the Weapon X procedure or is it a totally new mutant, Weapon XI? A British actor called Scott Adkins (Bourne Ultimatum, Holby City, Hollyoaks) is down to play a character called Weapon XI.

MTV Splash Page had these exclusive shots of the mouthless mutant.
The confusion as to the whole Deadpool / Weapon XI mix up is a result of the recent photos for a Deadpool action figure, but maybe that was marked up wrong or is a bit of studio misdirection. Whatever, the toy does look like the guy in these photos. However, the guy does not look like Ryan Reynolds.

I think it may well end up being somebody like Agent Zero or another human character who has all the various mutant abilities grafted onto him. The markings on the skin look similar to those drawn on Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) when he is about to go through the Adamantium procedure. I can’t think of any character from the X-Men comic books that has that look or powers but I could well be mistaken?

Who do you think this new mutant is? Are they an established X-Men character or something new for the film?

UPDATE: The mystery is cleared up in this later post and in this review of the film.

Deadpool action figure from Wolverine film looks nothing like any Wade Wilson I know

Posted by LiveFor on February 19, 2009

Here is what is supposedly the action figure for Deadpool in the X-Men Origins: Wolverine film.

In the comics Deadpool is usually loaded up with guns and swords. He wears a mask because his whole head is horribly disfigured.
Judging by the toy, Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is going to take his top off, tape knives to his hands like a knock off Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and get a few scratches on his chest. Not quite what this comic fan envisioned.

Film School Rejects are the ones who posted the image of the toy along with the below image from the trailer. Originally it was mentioned that this was Mutant Zero who fights Logan near the end of the film. However, he looks an awful lot like the Deadpool action figure.
Also on the toy packaging why has Wolverine got a weird shiny bouffant thing going on as if he’s just had his hair freshly done? What do you think of this version of Deadpool? Is it how you wanted to see him on the big screen? I hope they don’t mess up his cinema debut.

The Flash – Who will win Dr Horrible or a Friday Night Lighter?

Posted by LiveFor on February 11, 2009

It looks as if Dan Mazeau has been contracted to write a screenplay for The Flash and now there is a rumour going round that the fastest man alive has been cast and it is not Ryan Reynolds (his role as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine may have killed his chances for this one)

ThinkMcFlyThink have more on this.

We’ve received word from a very-reliable source that actor Scott Porter (formerly of the critically-acclaimed television-series Friday Night Lights) is one of those actors.

If you’ll remember back in the Fall of 2007, Porter auditioned for director George Miller for his (now dead) Justice League: Mortal and was said to be a top candidate for Superman.

The word is the studio has been quietly keeping their eye on the actor, and been keen to include him in one of their DC properties since JLM fell through

I’ve never seen Friday Night Lights so I don’t know if this is a good or bad choice. Any of you watch the show? Will he be a good Flash?

However, the not always reliable WENN have the rumour that Neil Patrick Harris (Dr Horrible, How I Met Your Mother) could be the Flash and I could see him as Barry Allen (if that is the Flash they are going with).

Who would work best for you?

Wolverine reshoots due to Deadpool

Posted by LiveFor on January 23, 2009

A couple of days ago news got out that Hugh Jackman and his crew had gone back for reshoots on the Wolverine film. This usually means that a film is in trouble and they are trying to get it sorted out. Happened with Hancock and many films before.

However, to try and smooth things out with the fans, Hugh Jackman issued an email explaining what was going on.

Hey everyone –

It’s Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have
read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently
shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie – I
owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts
with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait
until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will
be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the
positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of
the film. If you like that, we’ve got much more in store!

In the meantime, here’s an exclusive shot of some characters you may
recognize…

Cheers,
Hugh

The exclusive shot he mentions is the one at the top of this article. Looks like Wolvie has cut the cheese judging from everyone’s reaction!
One of the main reasons for the reshoots appears to have surfaced over on IESB – that reason appears to be the Merc with the Mouth, the one and only Deadpool.

We are told Ryan Reynolds was busy a guy in Vancouver during the extra
time the production spent there shooting some added footage for his Deadpool
character! Apparently most of the footage shot included Reynolds and Wolverine
himself, Hugh Jackman.

This isn’t your mother’s cameo…Deadpool is full on! Reynolds will
appear in the film even more than originally planned!

/film mention that Reynolds is reportedly obsessed with the character, hoping for a spin-off based on the success of Wolverine.

Now I am a huge fan of Deadpool. I’ve got most of his comics, got the cool little bust of him and he just works so well.
In the comics Deadpool was a soldier and went through the Weapon X system like Logan. Turned out he had terminal cancer and was given Logan’s healing factor to cure it and make him a bad ass. However, it left him disfigured as the cancer ravaged his body and also left him a total nut-case (this madness in the comics is often shown via Deadpool’s interior monologue and his breaking of the fourth wall when he speaks to the reader – would be great if they carried it through to the film version, by having him speak to camera or make references to knowing that he is in a film). None of the photos of Ryan Reynolds show any disfigurement but IESB mentions that CGI is being used on the character to show the scarring on his face, so that must happen at some point in the film.

On the one hand the reshoots on the Wolverine film do not bode well. Yet Jackman’s email and the news that there could be more Deadpool make me feel a little better about the whole thing.

Do you want more Deadpool in the film? Will it detract from the whole Wolveriness that the origin movie should have?
