Back in September last year Steven Soderbergh said he would next direct Knockout, a spy thriller marking the screen starring debut of Gina Carano, the mixed martial arts circuit fighter
Now news is out from various sources of who else will be starring in the film and there are some mightly big names there.
Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank, Inglourious Basterds, Hunger) is down to play an MI6 operative that meets up with the lead character. In addition Ewan McGregor, Dennis Quaid and Michael Douglas are also joining up.
The plot has also changed a little and is now a revenge story where Mallory Kane (Carano), now from a solid background and was raised around military honor and academia, is now a black ops soldier. She is double crossed by someone on her own team and must uncover who set her up to take the fall for a job gone wrong, leaving blood on her hands.
The new cast members surrounding Carano will all be a part of her special forces team. Douglas will play a government figure. Fassbender and another unnamed actor play members of her commando spy unit and McGregor will be playing a man who runs a Blackwater-type private military company that Carano’s character is employed with. No word on what character Dennis Quaid will be playing.
Written by Lem Dobbs. The movie is scheduled to go before cameras in February in several locations around the world.
Shaping up to be a great cast and possibly a great movie. All depends on how well Carano can act.

Director Steven Soderbergh has committed to next direct Knockout, a spy thriller that will mark the screen starring debut of Gina Carano, the mixed martial arts circuit fighter.
According to Variety this will be Soderbergh’s next film after the Warner Bros. comedy, The Informant!, made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The Matt Damon-starrer opens in the USA on 18th September.
Scripted by Lem Dobbs, “Knockout” casts Carano as a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who is given a second chance to use her skills for constructive purposes. The film is a closer cousin to “La Femme Nikita” and “Kill Bill” than “Million Dollar Baby,” in that it doesn’t take place in the fight ring. Rather, Soderbergh considers the film as a flat out action film in the James Bond mold, and will shoot in locations around the world that include Ireland, Turkey and the U.S.
Soderbergh will surround Carano will name actors in supporting roles.
The MMA circuit is where Soderbergh discovered Carano, a lightweight division slugger with movie star good looks. The Muay Thai-trained fighter has compiled a 7-1 record. Though Carano suffered her first loss in a title fight last month, she is considered the face of the fledgling women’s mixed martial arts fighting circuit.
Soderbergh Soderbergh, who earlier this summer exited a plan to direct “Moneyball” for Columbia Pictures, most recently directed “The Girlfriend Experience,” a film that starred porn star Sasha Grey in her first performance in a mainstream film.
Carano so far has appeared as herself in the documentary “Ring Girls” and the Oxygen reality series “Fight Girls.” She was also Crush on NBC’s “American Gladiators,” and had a role in the upcoming Michael Jai White action film “Blood and Bone.”
It sounds as if Knockout could be a quite a cool film. Nikita meets James Bond with a slice of xXx. Soderbergh’s films are always worth a watch and he always brings something a little different to the screen.

Despite the fact that it was about to start production on Monday in Phoenix, Arizona, Columbia Pictures has halted work on Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming major league baseball project Moneyball. The film, which was to star Brad Pitt, has been placed into “limited turnaround” by Columbia Picture’s Amy Pascal. According to Variety, this gives Soderbergh a chance to set up the project at another studio. It is currently being shopped to both Warner Brothers and Paramount.
The decision to halt work on Moneyball came after Pascal read the final draft of the screenplay, written by Steve Zaillian with Soderbergh, and found it to be quite different than the original film she once championed. If another studio does not pick up the film by Monday, Columbia Pictures will look at replacing Soderbergh as the director. This could delay filming for quite sometime to come.
Moneyball is based on Michael Lewis’ bestseller of the same name, with Pitt signed on to play Billy Beane, the former Major League phenom that undermined his playing career by taking a big paycheck before he was ready. The player resurfaced as Oakland A’s general manager and found success fielding competitive teams for low cost, compared to the payrolls of league rivals like the New York Yankees. Soderbergh was set to use real ballplayers as actors. He also shot interviews with ballplayers for vignettes that were to be woven into the film.
Moneyball’s fate will be decided on Monday.

Envelope columnist Scott Feinberg interviewed Girlfriend Experience star Sasha Grey at the Edie and Lew Wasserman Cinematheque.
It is a good interview and as Jeffrey Wells says over on Hollywood Elsewhere, 21 year old “Grey comes off as shrewd, mature, intelligent and — sorry — faintly tragic. Because she works in an icky industry filled with untalented and under-educated people, and because no porn star has ever walked away from it intact.”
The Girlfriend Experience is Steven Soderbergh’s latest film and has been getting some excellent reviews.

Set in the weeks leading up to the 2008 presidential election, The Girlfriend Experience is five days in the life of Chelsea (adult film star Sasha Grey in her mainstream film debut), an ultra high-end Manhattan call girl who offers more than sex to her clients, but companionship and conversation – “the girlfriend experience.” Chelsea thinks she has her life totally under control—she feels her future is secure because she runs her own business her own way, makes $2000 an hour, and has a devoted boyfriend (Chris Santos) who accepts her lifestyle. But when you’re in the business of meeting people, you never know who you’re going to meet…
Sasha Grey last graced Life for Film’s pages in the PG Porn short, Roadside Ass-istance, but here she has gone all serious and mainstream.
The Girlfriend Experience looks like it could be one of those extremely interesting yet ultimately hollow films that come along every now and again. Have a look at the trailer below and let me know whether you agree with me.

Teaser Trailer had the photos for Steven Soderbergh’s latest film, The Informant, starring Matt Damon.
The Informant is based on the true-life novel by Kurt Eichenwald. The story revolves around Mark Whitacre (Damon), a rising star at the agriculture conglomerate, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). At the urging of his wife (Melanie Lynskey)Whitacre spilled the beans to an agent that he had been involved in a price-fixing scam with other major corporations over the food additive, lysine. As if that wasn’t enough of a story, it was later revealed that Whitacre (one of the most high profile, whistle-blowers in history) was suffering from Bipolar disorder and had defrauded millions from ADM.
The film also stars Patton Oswalt, Scott Bakula and Thomas F Wilson. It is due out this November.
