The Thing – Who will do the creature effects for the prequel to John Carpenter’s classic?

Posted by LiveFor on February 26, 2010

Just a small update, but one which could give us a feel to how the The Thing prequel will be on the big screen.

STYD have the news that Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff, Jr. of Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. are handling FX duties on The Thing.

The company has previously worked on the Aliens vs. Predator series, Alien 3, Alien: Resurrection, Evolution, The X-Files: Fight the Future, Tremors and Starship Troopers.

Not sure how I feel about that. The effects in those films were pretty good even though some of the films were not that good – also a mix of physical and computer effects in most of them. I hope they stick with the physical.

Bring back Rob Bottin I say.

This new film is directed by Matthijs van Heijningen and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton (read more on the casting here).

Shooting begins soon in Toronto.

How do you feel about Amalgamated Dynamics doing the effects for The Thing?

i for one like this peice of news. Woodruff was in on the Terminator, and both on Aliens and Leviathan \o/
the oldschool Stan Winston gang is the best in the bizz imo, but indeed i hope they stay to minimal
cgi and more animatronics, they usually want to but i guess CGI i cheaper now that real materials:/
