The Rum Diary – Johnny Depp’s new one has been seen

Posted by LiveFor on April 22, 2010

The Rum Diary is another book by Hunter S Thompson that Johnny Depp is starring the filmic adaption…that was a messy sentence. Anway, I have been following the production of the film which also stars Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and many more.

Last I heard was that it had still not been finished, but now, the delightfully wrong in a good way, Film Drunk have news of a test screening of the film and here is the review their source sent them.

I was approached by the test screener creepers who hang out after flicks, and when he said Rum Diary, I practically snatched the invitation out of his hand. I almost f*cked it up for myself though, saying I was in the industry and they weren’t gonna let me in. But then I told em I’m still but a lowly student in a documentary filmmaking class and busted out my old ID card for good amberheardmeasure, thanking my lucky stars I still hold on to that relic.

The Scoop: It’s not Fear and Loathing, but that’s OK. Depp’s rendition of a younger Hunter has all the familiarity we love, but he’s not familiar with the drugs yet, still just a boozehound, forming his greater ideals. His sidekick this time around is an alright dude [Aaron Eckhart as Sanderson, I believe. -Ed.], no Benicio that’s for damn sure. But it’s Giovanni Ribisi who steals the show*. You see in Ribisi’s degenerate, Nazi sympathizing, junkie state, the beginnings of Hunter/Kemp’s drug aspirations. His every line is quotable and his every appearance is like a surprise mugging – but by cuddly unicorns, which turns out alright in the long run. Lastly, Amber Heard is the mermaid of my dreams, but you can tell the upper brass had a field day in the cutting room, leaving all gratuitous nudity on the floor, being one of the only detriments to the film.

Sounds promising. Looking forward to seeing what they have done with the book.

The Rum Diary – Johnny Depp’s next Hunter S Thompson film could be at Cannes

Posted by LiveFor on April 8, 2010

I am really looking forward to seeing The Rum Diary. Been ages since we heard any movement on it but looks like we’ll be seeing it soon.

Nina Saxon Design, one of the entertainment industry’s leading design production studios, specializing in main and end titles, title sequences, and animated motion graphics logos for major motion pictures, television movies and TV programs, and entertainment production companies, has completed the main title design sequences for one upcoming, and two recent, high profile feature films. The announcement was made by the company’s president, Nina Saxon, widely acknowledged for close to 30 years as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished and successful title designers.

Nina Saxon Design has completed the main title sequence for the GK Films release “The Rum Diary,” starring Johnny Depp, Amber Heard and Aaron Eckhart, based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson. That film, from producer Graham King, is currently seeking distribution at the Cannes Film Festival. “The Rum Diary,” directed by Bruce Robinson (who also wrote the screenplay), depicts the story of Paul Kemp (Depp), a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean.

Regarding her title design projects, Saxon says, “I see my work as providing an introduction to a film that sets both an artistic and a thematic tone. When I do my job well, the audience is involved with the film, before the credits have even finished.”

Nina Saxon Design also completed the entire opening sequence for the recent film “The Yellow Handkerchief,” for director Udayan Prasad and producer Arthur Cohn. That film, which stars William Hurt, Maria Bello, and Kristen Stewart, presents the story of a road trip through Louisiana, which transforms three strangers, who were originally brought together by their respective feelings of loneliness.

Check out some photos from the shoot. More here and here

The Walking Dead – Casting for the Zombie TV series may have Apollo, Lucifer or Dorian Gray

Posted by LiveFor on February 16, 2010

Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead is the ultimate zombie story. A great comic that has the simple idea of following survivors or a zombie apocalypse after the film has finished. I’ve been following the transition of the comic book to the small screen quite closely. Frank Darabont is at the helm of the TV show so all well and good.

Until now there have been no word on who would be starring in the show, in particular the main character Rick Grimes.

Now Big Shiny Robot have word on three possibles.

The first is Jamie Bamber – He was Apollo in Battlestar Galactica and is currently on TV over here in England in the UK version of Law and Order. He’s a Brit in case you didn’t know. I was surprised when I found out a couple of years ago. I really like him and think he would be good in the part, although it isn’t the definite “Hell yes” reaction I was hoping to have.

Next up is Mark Pellegrino who has been in Dexter, he is Jacob in Lost and is currently playing Lucifer’s host in Supernatural. I haven’t seen him in action so can’t really comment although I have heard good things from people in the know.

The last of the casting trio is another Brit, Stuart Townsend. He was going to be Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings, but got recast. He was going to be one of the Warriors Three in the Thor movie, but was recast. He was in the Nightstalker TV show reboot that got cancelled and he played Dorian Gray in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. I think that is all the needs be said about Mr Townsend.

Out of those three I’d have to stick with Bamber (but that could change after seeing some of Pellegrino’s work). Which of the three do you like the most? If not them who else could play Rick?

Other people who could fit are Peter Krause (Six Feet Under), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and possibly Nathan Fillion.

Will the Green Lantern be Bradley Cooper?

Posted by LiveFor on May 6, 2009

There has been a lot of talk about who will be donning the Green and reciting the Green Lantern oath – Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Charlie Bartlett), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Jack Black (Year One), David Boreanaz (Buffy, Angel, Bones), Ryan Gosling (The Notebook), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) to name but a few (my favourite would be Fillion).

Now another name has been thrown into the wilds of the internet and that name is Bradley Cooper. You may not know the name but you will have seen his face – Alias, The Hangover, Failure to Launch, Yes Man, He’s Just Not That Into You, and The Midnight Meat Train.

He has only been a lead in the last one, which was a horror, and all the rest have been mainly comedy roles so it is a bit of a surprise that he has been included to play Hal Jordan.

Here is what Drew McWeeney a.k.a. Moriarty on AICN, has to say about Cooper.

HitFix can exclusively report that Bradley Cooper is now one of the guys most likely to don the suit and slip on the power ring as The Green Lantern for director Martin Campbell.

Let’s be clear: they have not hired him yet. But the process is far enough along that this is more than just a meeting or some spot on a wish list. Keep in mind that Campbell likes to see a lot of people when he’s casting… and even when he’s screen-testing, he seems willing to explore as many options as possible… but with the film set to shoot later this summer, they’ve got to start making their choices, and now’s the time to put people in front of the camera and see who really works in the suit.

As the quote says Bradley is “one of the guys” so nothing has been decided. I personally just don’t see him as Earth’s Green Lantern, but he can act.

Would Bradley make a good Green Lantern? If not him who would you like to see play the part?

Who should play Green Lantern?(online surveys)

John Cena talks about the Captain America rumour

Posted by LiveFor on March 30, 2009

There have been many rumours as to who will be playing Steve Rogers, The First Avenger – Captain America. Names such as Matthew McConaughey, Matt Damon, Will Smith, Aaron Eckhart and one that I posted a while back, Neal McDonough. However, one name that has cropped up recently is WWE Superstar, John Cena.

MTV caught up with the big guy to ask him. “Strictly a rumor,” said Cena but added with a smile, “If you guys are listening over at Marvel, that is a pretty cool rumor. I’m extremely patriotic, I was a captain of the football team once, so I think it works out. I think I’m your man.”

“To kill the rumor, I was never contacted by anyone,” admitted Cena. “Usually when those rumors start it’s because someone in that community thinks that I would be okay for a role. I’m flattered that they think I could play Captain America and I would be up for it.”

Yet, for an athlete known to give 250 pound bruisers the occasional “Attitude Adjustment” when necessary, could “The Champ” take himself seriously clad in a spandex jumpsuit?

“Hmm…could I take myself seriously in spandex…have you seen my other job?” joked Cena. “I think I could be alright. I think it’s a great fit.”

I personally hope that they don’t go with Cena for Captain America. I’d rather they went for a big name actor or a total unknown first (although Cena has done a bit of action before).

Who do you want to see throw Captain America’s mighty shield? Would Cena be a good choice?

Johnny Depp going to or from the set of The Rum Diary

Posted by LiveFor on March 28, 2009

“Private source. Depp with, I believe, Buck Holland..his longtime security man.”

Based on Hunter S. Thompson’s novel of the same name, The Rum Diary follows Depp as Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist who decides to kick around in San Juan until his ship comes in, working as a journalist for a newspaper that’s on its last legs, drinking gallons of rum and experimenting with LSD. With his new friend Bob Sala by his side, Kemp becomes entangled in a corrupt hotel development scheme with a slick PR consultant named Sanderson. Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins, Michael Rispoli, and Giovani Ribisi also star in this.

The photo below is similar to the previous one I posted, but you get to see a camera in this one and gives a cool little peak into the film making world. Thanks to Pam for sending me these.

Amaury Nolasco joins The Rum Diary

Posted by LiveFor on March 26, 2009

Actor Amaury Nolasco, featured in the Fox Television series Prison Break, arrived in his native Puerto Rico on Wednesday to join the cast of The Rum Diary, a film starring Johnny Depp.

Nolasco said in a press release that he felt “doubly happy” about the chance to combine business with pleasure.

“The Rum Diary” is based on the book of the same name by late “gonzo” journalist Hunter S. Thompson, recounting his experiences living in Puerto Rico in the 1950s.

Shooting on the movie is set to begin next Monday on the Caribbean island.

Depp also portrayed Thompson in the 1998 film “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” with Puerto Rico’s Benicio del Toro as his co-star.

Nolasco joins a cast that includes Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins, Giovanni Ribisi and Gavin Houston.

“None of them will leave Puerto Rico without a little piece of our flavor,” Nolasco said of his colleagues.

Directed by Bruce Robinson, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “The Killing Fields,” the new film is being produced by Depp, Christi Dembrowski and Graham King, whose credits include “The Departed,” “The Aviator” and “Gangs of New York.”

Cheers to Pam for letting me know.
