Drokk! Judge Dredd’s creator, John Wagner, talks about the new film

Posted by LiveFor on January 29, 2010

John Wagner is the man who created Judge Dredd and he is still writing the character in 2000AD 30 years later.

As we all know, Stallone was Dredd in the film adaption from a while back. The first 10 minutes where okay and it went down hill from there.

Now, speaking to 2000AD Review, Joe Wagner comments on the new film that has been written by Alex Garland with concept art by comic book artist Jock (above). He also mentions what he thought of the Stallone version.

I have read the script (by Alex Garland) and seen Jock’s visuals. While I can’t go into detail about the content I can say that it’s high-octane, edge of the seat stuff, and gives a far truer representation of Dredd than the first movie. I hated that plot. It was Dredd pressed through the Hollywood cliché mill, a dynastic power struggle that had little connection with the character we know from the comic.

Confident? I will be once I hear they’ve started filming. There’s many a slip.

There you have hit. Still not much on what the story will entail, but if Dredd’s creator likes it then that can only be a good thing.

What would you want to see in a new Judge Dredd film? What is needed to make it classic Dredd?

Still no word on who will be Dredd in the new film, but you can vote on who you would like in the poll below.

Judge Dredd film getting closer

Posted by LiveFor on November 22, 2009

2000AD, Batman and Losers artist Jock recently twittered

then a DREDD movie meeting with DNA in london on monday.

Exciting stuff and good to know things are moving forward.

Jock had been doing the concept art for the film that is being written by Alex Garland.

Doesn’t look as if Gerard Butler will be playing Dredd. If not him then who?

Judge Dredd – Could Gerard Butler be heading to Mega City 1?

Posted by LiveFor on September 29, 2009

Gerard_ButlerI recently posted the fact that the comic book artist Jock (The Losers) was still working on the concept art for the new Judge Dredd film. Alex Garland (The Beach) has written the script and things are slowly moving along.

As we all know Stallone played him in the previous version (it had a great opening 10 minutes and then it just got ugly). The big question for the new one is who will they get to play Judge Dredd?

I could see someone like Bruce Campbell (he has the chin), Ron Perlman (he doesn’t mind covering his face and we all know Dredd never takes his helmet off – well not on screen anyway), Thomas Jane, Billy Zane or Jason Statham.

I have received a few emails that suggest Gerard Butler (Gamer, 300, Law Abiding Citizen) is interested in the role and has been in talks. Now I have looked around the web for confirmation of this, but so far I cannot find anything else. However, the emails I have received have all come from different unrelated sources, a couple of whom are usually spot on.

For the moment mark this one down as a great big rumour though – it is still early days and I personally don’t think they are as far along as casting.

If anyone happens to know Gerard could you ask him if this is true. I will keep digging and let you know if I find anything more.

Do you think Gerard Butler would make a good Judge Dredd? If not him who else could it be?

Jock still working on Judge Dredd concept art

Posted by LiveFor on September 8, 2009

1This is one of those pieces that is sort of news but isn’t. Keep on reading and you will see what I mean.

The excellent comic book artist Jock recently tweeted some kind words about Judge Dredd screenwriter Alex Garland, whose script the “Losers” artist is currently developing visuals for.

@jock4twenty working through script visuals for JUDGE DREDD movie. Alex Garland writes a great script.

The reason why I say this is not really new news is that it was known that Alex Garland (The Beach) was working on a Judge Dredd screenplay back in December of last year (more here) and there was some lovely concept art from Jock in January.

However, since then it has all gone a bit quiet. Hence the reason for this post. Looks as if things are slowly creeping forward for 2000AD’s Dredd and Mega City One. Humour me, I just love a bit of Dredd.

I don’t suppose anyone has a copy of the new script they care to send my way?

The question though is who can play Dredd in the new film? Christian Bale, Jason Statham, Bruce Campbell, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, The Rock, Ron Perlman and Billy Zane are just a few ideas. Don’t forget the original take on Dredd was based on Clint Eastwood.

Of course if the big bad of the piece is Judge Death then the main man, Doug Jones (Hellboy, Legion) is the one for that.

Is Judge Dredd heading back to the big screen?

Posted by LiveFor on December 12, 2008

We all remember the Sylvestor Stallone Judge Dredd movie from back in the day. Kind of not so good apart from the look and feel of Mega City One (plus there was a Hammerstein cameo). However looks as if there may be movement on a new 2000AD Judge Dredd film.

Mania has more on the story.

Ever since 2002, Rebellion (who holds the rights to the character) has been working to relaunch the film franchise. Back then they had ambitious plans to film back-to-back Dredd movies, In 2003 Shorline Entertainment got involved to finance the films with an eye on going into production that year. It didn’t happen.

Well, now it appears that there’s a new plan for bringing the Judge back to the big screen. Edward Mazmanian, he of the many and varied comic book movie groups on FaceBook, has uncovered info at ShowBizData.com about this new development.

According to the info, which he’s duplciated at the Judge Dredd Movie Group, the new film is a joint production between DNA Films and Fox Searchlight. Allon Reich (‘28 Weeks Later) is producing. Alex Garland (‘28 Days Later‘, ‘Sunshine‘). The production is currently seeking a director.
