The Killer Inside Me – Trailer for Winterbottom’s controversial adaption of the book

Posted by LiveFor on May 6, 2010

This adaption has been controversial due to the violence against women it portrays. Not sure why people have been surprised though as the book does deal with a bloke who is batshit nuts!

I’ve covered it quite a bit and it stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas

Based on the novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, Michael Winterbottom’s THE KILLER INSIDE ME tells the story of handsome, charming, unassuming small town sheriff’s deputy Lou Ford.

Lou has a bunch of problems. Woman problems. Law enforcement problems. An ever-growing pile of murder victims in his West Texas jurisdiction. And the fact he’s a sadist, a psychopath, a killer. Suspicion begins to fall on Lou, and it’s only a matter of time before he runs out of alibis.

But in Thompson’s savage, bleak, blacker than noir universe nothing is ever what it seems, and it turns out that the investigators pursuing him might have a secret of their own.

The Killer Inside Me got slammed at Sundance but gets picked up despite the violence

Posted by LiveFor on February 2, 2010

Michael Winterbottom’s adaption of The Killer Inside Me stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas. I’ve been following it for a while now and it debuted at Sundance. Here’s the plot:

Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford is a pillar of the community in his small Texas town, patient and thoughtful. Some people think he’s a little slow and boring but that’s the worst they say about him. But then nobody knows about what Lou calls his ’sickness’. It nearly got him put away when he was younger, but his adopted brother took the rap for that. Now the sickness that has been lying dormant for a while is about to surface again – and the consequences are brutal and devastating.

Now reading that you would expect something dark, brutal and violent. Guess what? It sounds as if it is exactly that and yet it got absolutely slammed at Sundance for its graphic violence. However, reading between the lines I gather it is a good film, but the extreme violence (apparantly Jessica Alba’s characer gets beaten up so badly you can see her teeth through her cheek – Two Face anyone?) turned many off.

However, IFC Films this weekend paid $1.5 million to distribute The Killer Inside Me in the U.S. so it does appear that we’ll be able to watch the film. To be honest it sounds as if it is just extremely faithful to the novel by Jim Thompson.

Other films that found buyers at Sundance 2010 include:
Buried (Ryan Reynolds trapped alive in a big box)
The Kids Are All Right starring Annette Bening and Julianne Moore as lesbians
Twelve with Chace Crawford, Emma Roberts and 50 Cent
Hesher starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

International buyers are looking at other films from the festival including:
Happy Thank You More Please from Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother)
Catfish, a documentary about an online relationship
Blue Valentine with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams
Splice the sci-fi film by Vincenzo Natali.

Lots of good films heading our way.

Independence Day 2 and 3?

Posted by LiveFor on November 12, 2009

id4This is another one of those newsy non-news kind of things. Roland Emmerich is pushing his new disaster movie 2012. However, when speaking to MTV he again mentioned a sequel to his alien invasion movie, Independence Day.

“What we want to do in the next – it’s actually two movies – we want to do a bigger arc,” he explained. “‘Independence Day’ was always like the king who leads his troops into battle against an evil force, and that stays like that.”

So the plan is not just one sequel but two. And Emmerich has got a nifty title in mind: “‘ID4-ever,’ Part I and II maybe?” he suggested.

There is no script but Will Smith is apparantly going to be involved “The idea is just to continue the story and actually I don’t know how many years ago this was—twelve, thirteen, fourteen years ago—and just continue where it ended.”

There you have it. Basically it is just being talked about.

However, thinking about it a sequel set all these years after could be pretty cool. How has society moved on after the invasion? Did we become one planet united or did it all fracture and go to crap again? How has the alien technology been used and adapted? Loads of potential there, but it could just end up with a bigger, meaner alien species heading to Earth.

The comic book, Resurrection, by Marc Guggenheim (WOLVERINE) and drawn by David Dumeer, goes along similar lines. That would make a great movie. You can read the first issue here.

I always looked on the aliens in the first one being on the run from another alien species and moving from planet to planet. That’s just me. ID4 was a bit hit and miss, although the audio book spin off with the aliens invading London with only Patrick Moore to stop them was cool.

What are your thoughts on a sequel? What should be in it? Should Bill Pullman still be President?

The Killer Inside Me – Trailer for the Jim Thompson adaption starring Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba

Posted by LiveFor on November 5, 2009

tkim-2I’ve been covering this one for quite a while. I posted some photos a few weeks ago and now there is a sales trailer for Michael Winterbottom’s film.

It stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas.

The trailer is about 5 minutes long and shows quite a bit of what the story involves. If you should watch it let me know what your impressions of it were. I kind of liked it. Casey Affleck seems pretty solid in the lead.
