Felicia Day sees Red in Syfy Original Movie

Posted by LiveFor on March 9, 2010

Felicia Day, star of web videos The Guild and Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, and Dollhouse who also played “Vi” in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will portray a werewolf-hunting descendant of Little Red Riding Hood in the new Syfy Saturday Original Movie, Red (not to be confused with the adaption of Warren Ellis’ comic book Red starring Bruce Willis or the film from a few years ago called Red starring Brian Cox or Warren Beatty’s Reds or the reimagining of Red Riding Hood in a gothic style heading to the big screen starring Amanda Seyfried).

Scheduled to premiere in 2011, Red is Syfy’s latest re-imagining of classic fairy tales, legends and pop culture characters. The new line of films launched with Beauty and the Beasts: A Dark Tale, which starred Estella Warren, on February 27.

Syfy, one of television’s most prolific producers of original movies, is also developing films around the stories of Aladdin, Sinbad the Sailor and Hansel & Gretel, among other projects.

In the action-packed Red, Red (Day) brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business – hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him. Red also stars Kavan Smith (Stargate Atlantis) and Stephen McHattie (Watchmen and he was amazing in Pontypool).

In addition to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Felicia is most widely known for her work in web video. She co-starred in Joss Whedon’s Internet musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog, which was voted the Best Web TV of 2008 by Time Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and People Magazine.

Currently she stars in the web series The Guild, which she created, writes and stars in. The Guild was the winner of the YouTube, Yahoo and SXSW Best Web Series Awards for 2008. The series has generated more than 50 million views web-wide. Day also has a hugely popular Twitter following, reaching more than 1.7 million fans.

Here endeth the press release. Day is cool so I imagine this will have some watchable moments and McHattie is always great to watch. We shall see what we shall see.

Any Felicia fans out there looking forward to this?

Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods pushed back to 2011 so it can be 3Dified

Posted by LiveFor on October 10, 2009

the-cabin-in-the-woods-cutDrew Goddard is directing The Cabin in the Woods, but all people seem to be interested in is that it was co-written by Joss Whedon. That’s no bad thing as a horror movie with a Joss Whedon spin should be good (oh Firefly why were you cancelled), but I do feel a little bad that Drew Goddard is sort of skimmed over. Try and big up Drew if you can.

Anyway Joss’s new movie (doh!)…Drew’s new movie has been moved from 5th February 2010 to 14th January 2011. This has been confirmed by Collider.

The reason for this is not because the film sucks. Oh no. It is because they have decided to turn it 3D. That will take time and they also need space to show it in Cinemas that are 3D equipped – with films like Avatar, A Christmas Carol, Toy Story 3 and more heading our way the 3D screens are pretty much booked up for a while.

Now while I am a big fan of 3D I don’t particularly like it when they shoot a film in 2D and then decide to change it. They are doing the same for Iron Man 2. If it is not shot for 3D then it is not going to be a fully 3D experience – they often have a lack of depth in them.

Still technology marches on as it always does and the decision has been made. Just a pity we have to wait another year to see Cabin in the Woods by the amazingly brilliant Drew Goddard. Apparantly it was co-written by a bloke who has done a bit of TV.

What do you think about 2D films being converted into 3D?

Dollhouse Season 1 – Epitaph One Sneak Peek

Posted by LiveFor on July 8, 2009

Dollhouse is the Joss Whedon series where people have memories and skills downloaded into them and at the end of each mission they have their memory wiped. The Feds are after them and Eliza Dushku looks lovely. All well and good. Unlike Firefly, Dollhouse has been given a second series.

However, there was a final episode from the first series that is yet to be shown. It is called Epitaph One and is set in 2019 after some kind of apocalypse. Who knew! It stars Felicia Day and here is a sneak peek.

Megan Fox as Buffy – Dwayne Johnson as Commando

Posted by LiveFor on June 10, 2009

Cinefools has reported on a couple of rumours.

The first is that Megan Fox is being considered for the title role in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot that I mentioned a while back.

At the time of that news stories I sent Megan a quick Tweet asking if she was interested in playing the part and her response was in the negative.

Going with that and the fact it is still early days in this Buffy stories I would say that there is not much truth in the rumour.

Who else would you like to see as a new Buffy?

The second rumour is to do with the Commando remake. Cinefool’s source says that Dwayne Johnson (Doom, Race to Witch Mountain) is the favourite to play the lead in the film that is in early development.

Not a bad choice for the role in my opinion but the plot of Commando was recently updated in the excellent Taken starring Liam Neeson.

How do you feel about The Rock as Commando?

Again I’ll stress that these are both rumours.

Buffy’s heading back to the big screen. Joss is nowhere to be seen.

Posted by LiveFor on May 26, 2009

A new incarnation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer could be coming to the big screen according to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, the big news is that Joss Whedon isn’t involved and it’s not set up at a studio, but Roy Lee and Doug Davison of Vertigo Entertainment are working with original movie director Fran Rubel Kuzui and her husband, Kaz Kuzui, on what is being labeled a remake or relaunch, but not a sequel or prequel.

While Whedon is the person most associated with “Buffy,” Kuzui and her Kuzui Enterprises have held onto the rights since the beginning, when she discovered the “Buffy” script from then-unknown Whedon. She developed the script while her husband put together the financing to make the 1992 movie, which was released by Fox.

Kuzui later teamed with Gail Berman, then president of Sandollar Television, bringing back Whedon to make the TV series, which was produced by Fox TV and launched on the WB in 1997. Kuzui and Sandollar received executive producer credits on “Buffy” and its spinoff, “Angel.”

The new “Buffy” film, however, would have no connection to the TV series, nor would it use popular supporting characters like Angel, Willow, Xander or Spike. Vertigo and Kuzui are looking to restart the story line without trampling on the beloved existing universe created by Whedon, putting the parties in a similar situation faced by Paramount, J.J. Abrams and his crew when relaunching “Star Trek.”

One of the underlying ideas of “Buffy” allows Vertigo and Kuzui to do just that: that each generation has its own vampire slayer to protect it. The goal would be to make a darker, event-sized movie that would, of course, have franchise potential.

How do you feel about a new Joss Whedonless Buffy film? Could it work? Should it have any ties with the TV show? Who would you want to see as the new Slayer?
