Dune – A Special Edition of David Lynch’s film

Work is slowly moving on with a new version of Dune directed by Pierre Morel (Taken). However, a person by the name of Sasha Burrow has a project to revamp the David Lynch version (which I love) by giving it all new special effects. Kind of like the Star Wars Special Editions only with more love.

This is a project I have been slowly working on over the last few years with the goal of ultimately replacing many of the “outdated” special effects shots in David Lynch’s 1984 version of Dune.

The project initially began as an endeavor to build a “proper” ornithopter – one with flapping wings, that neither the movie or the mini-series managed to achieve. However, with the advent of the “fan-edit” the scope of the project has expanded with the goal of updating the effects in all those places in the movie where I feel things could be significantly “improved.”

Although I am currently working on this by Myself, it’s a large undertaking and if there is anyone interested in helping this project along, feel free to contact Me – We might actually be able to get this project completed with a few more skilled and enthusiastic people!

Let me tell you they have done an incredible amount of work. Diagrams, CGI tests, pre vis bits, mock up for DVD packaging and more. Absolutely incredible and one day it would be so good to see the updated version. Head on over to the site for more info on it. Good luck on the project.

Project London – Trailer for independently-produced, crowd-sourced, science-fiction, action-adventure, no-budget, effects movie

This looks amazing and even more so as they had no budget to make it.

After WWII, the Nalardians, an alien race, have brought their technology to Earth. Peace reigns under the world government they helped create, the Joint Command.

Nebraska Higgins plunges into a world of intrigue and struggle when Joint Command kills his father, a hero known by his exosuit, Arizona.

Seeing a prime opportunity, the London Underground, a rugged band of revolutionaries, recruits Nebraska to join the resistance against the Joint Command.

Can Nebraska deal with the loss of his father as interplanetary calamities threaten to destroy the world around him? Earth’s fate depends on the potential in a young man’s heart.

This clip explores the world of Project London and introduces the opposing forces, Joint Command and The London Underground. All 3D animated elements were created using Blender, open source software.

Megamind – A new look at DreamWorks evil genius

This was the film that was originally called Oobermind and was going to have Robert Downey Jr voice the main character. That got changed and Will Ferrell got the job. Now we have a better look at the main character (the only other outing has been on a poster from August last year).

“When super villain MegaMind (Will Ferrell) defeats his archrival Metro Man (Brad Pitt), the world should be his oyster. But instead, MegaMind falls into total despair. It turns out that life without a rival is life without a purpose for him. So he creates a new superhero rival, Titan (Jonah Hill). Unfortunately for him and the world, the new hero wants to be a super villain too. The new villain begins his rampage, and MegaMind sets out to stop him, beginning a path to redemption in the process.”

It is due out on the 5th November 2010.

Heavy Metal – Who is writing and directing the sci-fi anthology?

Been a while since there has been any movement on the new Heavy Metal sci-fi anthology animated movie. Now author Neal Asher (check out my interview with him) has some more info on who will be directing and writing the various sections for the film – some top directors involved. I wonder if Cameron’s would have any ties to the Avatar universe?

Pre-release Information – A $50 million budget 3D CG animated movie based on the magazine. This probably won’t have any stories from the first 1981 movie, however like the first one, it will feature around seven or eight different stories. Each segment will be directed by a different person. The title to this movie hasn’t been chosen yet. This current title is just a placeholder.

Ultramarines – General Zod and an Elephant Man to voice the Warhammer 40000 crew

I was already excited for the CGI movie based on the Games Workshop Warhammer 40K universe and now we get some quality actors involved. Terence Stamp, Sean Pertwee and John Hurt head the cast of actors lending their voices – and their facial expressions – to the Ultramarines movie.

Other key parts are to be played by Steven Waddington, Donald Sumpter and Johnny Harris, with Ben Bishop, Christopher Finney and Gary Martin appearing in supporting roles.

The three lead actors shared their thoughts on working on Ultramarines…

Multi award-winning and Oscar-nominated Terence Stamp confesses that a boyhood love of the science fiction classics attracted him to his role. “Warhammer 40,000 is an incredibly strange world, yet one with rules,” he says. “I felt very comfortable with Ultramarines – in fact, it’s really the culmination of a lot of things I’ve been in.” Stamp’s previous credits include Superman, Superman II, Valkyrie and the Halo 3 video game.

Sean Pertwee, acclaimed for his role in the action horror movie Dog Soldiers, says, “Before Ultramarines, I had no idea about the depth of Warhammer 40,000. I used to be into graphic art, so I find the concepts and architecture and character designs quite extraordinary. This film really is being made for the fans.” Pertwee’s other credits include Event Horizon, Mutant Chronicles and Equilibrium, as well as the video games Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior and Killzone 2.

John Hurt, winner of countless international awards and Oscar-nominated for his performances in The Elephant Man and Midnight Express, has a special feature role in Ultramarines. He says, “I know quite a lot about Warhammer 40,000 because my elder son was into it. I used to take him down to the store in London’s Oxford Street so he could see it in action. It’s a very different world which really teases the imagination.” Hurt’s numerous other film roles include Alien, Hellboy and Hellboy II and Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Vanessa Chapman, managing director of the production company, Codex Pictures, is delighted to have attracted such a prestigious cast to Ultramarines. “Our goal has been to give the characters distinctive and authoritative voices, fitting to these superhuman men of war,” she says. “Coupled with the authentic and engaging facial capture provided by Image Metrics, these outstanding actors are going to do so much to bring the Warhammer 40,000 universe powerfully to life on screen.”
