Inception – New Escher style poster

Posted by LiveFor on May 7, 2010

Here is another cool poster for Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Can’t wait to see it, but I just hope it doesn’t all end up being a dream of Leonardo DiCaprio.

A new trailer is also due out with Iron Man 2 so let me know if you see it and what it shows.

Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible–inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.

Batman 3 gets a release date

Posted by LiveFor on April 30, 2010

Warner Bros. has set July 20, 2012, as the release date for the third Christopher Nolan-directed Batman movie. Still no title, start date or story though.

The studio has barely begun the process of developing the movie according to Heat Vision; Nolan is in postproduction on “Inception,” but is hammering out a story with David Goyer.

There is no title as this point and no start date.

Let the speculation commence.

Superman or Batman – Billy Zane chatting to Christopher Nolan?

Posted by LiveFor on April 16, 2010

Bit of an odd one this. I got an email from someone in the States saying that Billy Zane had been talking with Christopher Nolan – director of the Batman films and shepherd of the Superman films whenever they get made.

As you will know I am a big fan of Billy Zane. He’s a cool dude after all. Even when the film is poor, and many of his are, Zane is always fun to watch and let us not forget he was in Titanic which made a bit of money. He was also in The Phantom which wasn’t too good and had the distinction of one of the worst taglines for a comic book movie – Slam Evil! – What were they thinking.

Getting back to the Zane and Nolan chatting. I thought this is obviously a rumour, but then I got another email from a different source who is usually pretty reliable. They said the same thing. I’ve asked for clarification, but nothing yet. I still have my doubts about the while thing.

However, I thought this would lead to some good discussion as to what character Zane could play if he was somehow involved in the next Batman film or a Superman reboot. Hell, let’s throw it open to the Marvel Universe as well.

What character could Zane play in a comic book movie?

Andy M and I always thought he would have been a perfect Batman back in the day. His Bruce Wayne would have been brill. Now he could make quite a cool Lex Luthor or Brainiac. As for Marvel I somehow see him a “Dum Dum” Duggan for SHIELD.

Now over to you.

Inception – Christopher Nolan talks about the mysterious sci-fi film

Posted by LiveFor on April 6, 2010

Speaking to the LA Times Christopher Nolan has shed some light on the mysterious film, Inception. We have had some intriguing trailers yet not much else is known about it the globe trotting sci-fi adventure.

The follows Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb: “a specialist in the new branch of corporate espionage — he’s a dream thief who plucks secrets from the minds of tycoons after pumping them full of drugs and hooking them up to a mysterious contraption (pic above).”

This is something Nolan has been working on for a while.

“I wanted to do this for a very long time, it’s something I’ve thought about off and on since I was about 16. I wrote the first draft of this script seven or eight years ago, but it goes back much further, this idea of approaching dream and the dream life as another state of reality.”

“[In a dream] you can look around and examine the details and pick up a handful of sand on the beach. I never particularly found a limit to that; that is to say, that while in that state your brain can fill in all that reality. I tried to work that idea of manipulation and management of a conscious dream being a skill that these people have. Really the script is based on those common, very basic experiences and concepts, and where can those take you? And the only outlandish idea that the film presents, really, is the existence of a technology that allows you to enter and share the same dream as someone else.”

“I originally wrote it as a heist movie, and heist movies traditionally are very deliberately superficial in emotional terms,” Nolan said. “They’re frivolous and glamorous, and there’s a sort of gloss and fun to it. I originally tried to write it that way, but when I came back to it I realized that — to me — that didn’t work for a film that relies so heavily on the idea of the interior state, the idea of dream and memory. I realized I needed to raise the emotional stakes. What we found in working on ‘Batman’ is that it’s the emotionalism that best connects the audience with the material. The character issues, those are the things that pull the audience through it and amplify the experience no matter how strange things get.”

“Think of film noir and if you picture the story as a maze, you don’t want to be hanging above the maze watching the characters make the wrong choices because it’s frustrating. You actually want to be in the maze with them, making the turns at their side, that keeps it more exciting… I quite like to be in that maze.”

All sounds very cool and still very mysterious. Can’t wait to see it.

Batman – Will the next film have The Riddler and will he be Benjamin Ciaramello

Posted by LiveFor on March 11, 2010

Recently, over on the Batman 3 IMDB page, Benjamin Ciaramello, (Santiago in Friday Night Lights) was listed as playing the Riddler

io9 got in touche with Ciaramello, and asked him about it. This was his response:

Edward Nygma, Eddie Nashton, call me what you want. There is no other one but me.

A riddle indeed. Is it one man’s quest to get himself in Christopher Nolan’s next Batman film? Rumour or reality?

Ciaramello also did this weird little video.

Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan has mentioned a little bit about what we can expect to see in the third Batman film.

“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story,” he said. “And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story”….. “Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.

He also said that out of all the Batman bad guys, Mr Freeze would definitely not be in the third film.

Superman – What do we need for the film to be good?

Posted by LiveFor on February 25, 2010

A story broke yesterday in Latino Review stating that David Goyer would be penning the proposed new Superman film. Since then there has been conflicting reports from all directions; Goyer is involved, Goyer is not involved, Hell even Christopher Nolan is not involved! Until a spokesman clears the situation up we are left to speculate and we all know the internet loves to speculate, so for arguments sake let’s say Goyer is involved. Would he be the right man? Will he be writing alone? What story will he be using?

David Goyer has a chequered track record. On one hand, he successfully developed Marvel character Blade in the first two instalments before single-handedly destroying what he had built with Blade Trinity which he directed as well as writing. Other blemishes on his resume include the farcical Jumper as writer, The Invisible (not to be confused with Grant Morrison’s The Invisibles) as director and one of the worst horror films ever made, The Unborn, which he both wrote and directed. Along with television series Flash Forward, Goyer has his fair share of detractors. Arguably his greatest success along with Blade was his involvement in Christopher Nolan’s Batman double, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight in which the later he shared a writing credit with Nolan’s brother Jonathan. With the monumental success of The Dark Knight and the news of Christopher Nolan being installed as ‘Godfather’ to the new Superman project it was inevitable Goyers name would be mooted.

Would he be the right man? Well as previously mentioned, Goyer does have some good and some bad but his writing credits are far greater than his directing efforts. Blade, Blade II, as well as Alex Proyas’ underrated sci-fi classic Dark City show that he does possess a deal of talent, but all of those projects pale in comparison to The Dark Knight.

With its dark undertones of crime and politics, The Dark Knight was more than just a superhero movie but is that what Superman needs? With two of The Dark Knight trio rumoured to be involved in Superman, it begs the question if Goyer is writing the script, will he be alone? Jonathan Nolan has worked with brother Christopher on The Prestige as well as The Dark Knight, but was not involved in Insomnia, Batman Begins or Inception so they are by no means inseparable and with Christopher’s role in the project still a little hazy it does not guarantee any involvement on Jonathan’s part. But until some confirmed facts about who exactly is working on the project surface and a director is named we can only speculate.

Stories for comic book adaptations are always a source of heated debate. Fans have their own favourite arcs and characters. Should it be an origins story? “Well that seems too commonplace these days and I suppose there’s Smallville for its sins”. “But it needs to be freshened up, it’s always the same with Lex and Lois and Clark!” What about a darker version? “Well that goes against Superman. Why does everything need to be dark these days?” These are arguments I hear all the time but what are the options? To be honest, we could spend all day discussing great Superman stories; Superman: Red Son, The Death of Superman, Whatever Happened to The Man of Tomorrow? But the rumoured story says the new film is set to adapt is John Byrne’s 80’s series The Man of Steel (although John Byrne has said he has not been approached about it) which is essentially an origins story. How much of this will be used is again up for debate, but a meeting between Batman and Superman in issue three is a little odd. Of course Batman and Superman have met in numerous comics over the years but the news of Nolans involvement in a Superman film from a comic which features both characters seems a little strange or even convenient. A lot of fans are keen on an epic idea that comic book scribe Mark Millar had planned well over a year ago. In an interview with Empire in late 2008, Millar talked about creating an 8 hour story which would chart the life of Kal-El from his birth until he is the only man left on Earth. Read the full interview here.

Lex Luthor

So very little to go on as a rather confusing cloud surrounds the future of Superman, but what would you like to see? Villains? Story? Writer? Director? Star?

Now debate away…

POLL: What Batman villain should be in the next film?

Posted by LiveFor on February 9, 2010

With the recent news that Batman 3 is being written and Christopher Nolan is still involved I thought I would ask which of Batman’s rogue gallery you wanted to see.

You can pick 3 as these films often go overboard on the villains. You can also go and vote on who you want to play Catwoman if she is used (Summer Glau is in the lead at the time this went to press) and which actor has been your favourite Batman.

Thanks to Pat for suggesting the poll. Check out all the other polls.
