Thor – Kat Dennings plays a human

Posted by LiveFor on November 25, 2009

Kenneth Branagh’s adaption of Thor has a great cast already in place. Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson to name but a few.

MTV Splash Page recently spoke with Natalie Portman, who was promoting her new film Brothers, and she revealed that Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) has a role in Thor as well.

“Well I’m really excited,” Portman told MTV News. “Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she’s a good friend and an amazing actress, so I’m looking forward to that.”

Variety has confirmed Dennings’ role in the film and is reporting that she will play Darcy, who works with Natalie Portman’s character, Jane Foster.

Thor is out on 20 May 2011.

Thor – Idris Elba to protect Asgard as Heimdall

Posted by LiveFor on November 20, 2009

Idris Elba is cool. That’s all you need to know. He was the ex-SAS bloke in the UK show Ultraviolet that saw him taking down Vampires, or leeches as he called them. Stateside you will know him mainly from The Wire. Plus he got to snog Beyonce in Obsessed. He is currently working on The Losers which is an adaption of the excellent DC Comic about special forces types on the run.

It looks as if he is on a comic book roll as Heat Vision have the news he has been cast in Marvel Studio’s Thor movie – not as a human character, but as the Asgardian known as Heimdall.

In the comic Heimdall is the brother of the warrior Sif. He is the all-seeing and all-hearing guardian sentry of Asgard, he stands on the rainbow bridge, Bifrost and stands watch for any attacks to Asgard. For ages, he stood as the guardian of Asgard, defending the city’s gates from any intruders, and was one of the most trusted servants of Odin.

He has also had a few battles with Thor in the comics either stopping him entering or leaving Asgard so I could well imagine we’ll see something like that in the film.

The movie follows Thor (Chris Hemsworth) a Norse God banished to Earth for his arrogance and reckless behavior in the Asgard, the capital city of the Norse Gods. On Earth, he falls in love with a nurse named Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), but must become a true hero when his sinister brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) brings the darkest forces of Asgard to wreak destruction on humanity. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (Hamlet), the film co-stars Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, and Tadanobu Asano.

It is shaping up to be an amazing cast.

Chuck could have been in Thor. Warriors Three are going to be in it

Posted by LiveFor on November 16, 2009

300px-Zachary_Levi01In an interview with USA Weekend, Zachary Levi (Chuck) revealed that he was cast as Fandral — a heroic adventurer who along with Hogun the Grim and Volstagg comprise the trio known as the Warriors Three — before being forced to back out of the role to fulfill his commitment to Chuck. All because an extra six episodes were ordered.

He also mentions that he audition for the role of Thor which surprised me. Not sure he would have worked as that character.

This is the first confirmation we have had that the Warriors Three will be appearing in Kenneth Branagh’s film. Dominic Cooper and Jude Law are both rumoured to be have been approached to star in the film and both would make a great Fandral. However, I think Levi with a goatee and ‘tache would have been excellent as the swashbuckling warrior – I imagine him as the Bruce Campbell character from Xena.

As for the rest of the Warriors Three, veteran actor Brian Blessed — previously rumoured to play Odin — could possibly play Volstagg. Imagine Blessed’s character from Flash Gordon, but without the wings and there you have it.

Hogun the Grim could possibly be portrayed by either Colm Feore (24, The Chronicles of Riddick) or Stellan Skarsgård (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End), both of whom have been confirmed to appear in Thor in currently unannounced roles, although Feore is supposedly down to play a villain in the film.

How do you think Levi would have got on as Fandral? Who would you like to see as the Warriors Three?

Anthony Hopkins to play Odin in Thor

Posted by LiveFor on October 30, 2009

WolfMan05By the Holy Beard of Zeus! Wait, wrong pantheon. Bam Kapow out of left field. Looks like Thor has a daddy. Nope, not Brian Blessed, no sir. It is Hannibal the Cannibal.

According to Heat Vision Blog Anthony Hopkins is in negotiations to play the Norse god Odin in Thor, Marvel Studios’ adaptation being directed by Kenneth Branagh.

The movie’s story sees the god of thunder Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions re-ignite an ancient war. As punishment, Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans. Once here, he learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends dark forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Chris Hemsworth is Thor and the cast includes Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Stellan Skarsgård, Robert De Niro and Jude Law.

One hell of a cast lining up for this one. By the way the photo of Hopkins at the top is from The Wolfman.

What do you think about Hopkins playing Odin?

Thor may star Robert De Niro and Jude Law

Posted by LiveFor on October 18, 2009

440px-Fandral_HeadAnother day another comic book film rumour – yesterday I posted the rumour Jackie Earle Haley could be playing Sinestro in Green Lantern (Collider spoke to him and he has heard nothing about that) – Now AICN have a rumour about the Kenneth Branagh directed Thor film

According to actor, Matthias Schweighöfer, who you may have seen in VALKYRIE or RED BARON – in an article in the German edition of Gentlemen’s Quarterly aka GQ, he states that he’s in the running for a role in Branagh’s THOR, but he also mentions that Jude Law and Robert DeNiro have joined the cast.

Now, I don’t doubt that they have, they’re very much the sort of Actor I would expect from a Kenneth Branagh helmed THOR film, I’m just absolutely flummoxed to think who they are playing.

Robert De Niro worked with Brannagh on the not very good Frankenstein and I am sure Law must have worked with Brannagh at some point.

As AICN say what characters could they be playing though. Chris Hemsworth is Thor, Tom Hiddleston is Loki, Jaime Alexander is Sif, Colm Feore is playing a villain, Brian Blessed is rumoured to be Odin (although I could see De Niro in that role as well, Stellan Skarsgard is also in it as is Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.

Going from what I know of the Thor comic I think, if the rumour is true, that Jude Law could play the dashing warrior, Fandral, of the Warriors Three (that’s him above). De Niro though I am just not sure.

What do you think of the rumour and who could they be playing?

Stellan Skarsgård joins the cast of Thor

Posted by LiveFor on October 5, 2009

stellan-skarsgardStellan Skarsgård has joined Marvel Studios’ Thor, reported the Swedish news site Ystads Allehanda.

Stellan Skarsgård is ready for a role in action movie Thor.

Everything is still secret about the project and Skarsgård can not reveal what role he will play.

“They wanted me to sign without reading the script. That I refused to do. Then they sent one to me that was so coded that I could only print one copy,” said Stellan Skarsgård.

Set for release on 20th May 2011, the Paramount Pictures comic book adaptation will be directed by Kenneth Branagh. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore and Samuel L. Jackson.

This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

What role do you think Stellan Skarsgård will be playing. I would say Odin, but there is still the rumour that Brian Blessed will be playing that role.

The Trotsky premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival

Posted by LiveFor on September 4, 2009

trotsky_01I am really looking forward to this one. Great central idea for a film and Jay Baruchel is pretty cool. Really wish I was at TIFF as there are loads of films I want to watch.

The All Canadian (English) Central Executive Committee of Pictures That Move announced that Jacob Tierney’s The Trotsky, will have its world premiere as a Special Presentation at this year’s gathering of Activities for the Support of Proletarian Internationalism (this obviously does not include galas) or as they like to call it, the Toronto International Film Festival.

A Park Ex Pictures production, produced by the extremely bourgeois Kevin Tierney, The Trotsky is a contemporary comedy set in Montreal starring Jay Baruchel (Tropic Thunder, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist, Knocked Up) as Leon, a 17-year-old high school student who believes himself to be the reincarnation of Russian revolutionary, Leon Trotsky.

The Trotsky screenings of the people for the people (otherwise known as Festival Screenings) are:

Public 1 Friday Sept 11 – 9:00 pm RYERSON (43 Gerrard Street East)
Public 2 Sunday Sept 13 – 12:45 pm SCOTIABANK (259 Richmond St West)
PRESS & INDUSTRY Sat Sept 12 – 2:00 pm Cumberland 1

The Trotsky also features an impressive array of Canadian actors, among them, Geneviève Bujold (Dead Ringers), Anne-Marie Cadieux (Maman Last Call), Colm Feore (Bon Cop Bad Cop), Emily Hampshire (Snow Cake), Michael Murphy (Away From Her) and Saul Rubinek (Wall Street).

Leon Bronstein is not your average Montreal West high school student. For one thing, none of his peers can claim to be the reincarnation of early 20th century Soviet iconoclast and Red Army hero, Leon Trotsky. When his father sends Leon to public school as punishment for starting a hunger strike at Dad’s clothing factory, Leon quickly lends new meaning to the term “student union”, determined as he is to live out his pre-ordained destiny to the fullest.

But will our young hero ever inspire his fellow students to care about anything? Will he ever convince the beautiful, and significantly older, Alexandra that she won’t be charged with statutory rape if they become engaged? And will he ever find his Lenin?

The Trotsky is Jacob Tierney’s follow-up to his feature directorial debut Twist, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival Critics’ Week section, before going to Toronto, Rotterdam and some 20 other festivals around the world. An actor turned writer-director, Jacob was most recently seen in the feature film Walk All Over Me and on TV as the title horseman in the CBC mini-series St. Urbain’s Horseman.

Infamous exploiter of workers, technicians and actors in both official languages, producer Kevin Tierney last made Canadian audiences laugh out loud with Bon Cop Bad Cop, the first ever bilingual film made in Canada, and the highest grossing Canadian movie in domestic box office history. Bon Cop Bad Cop won the Genie Award for Best Film of 2006. Other credits include the acclaimed TV movies Choice: The Henry Morgentaler Story and One Dead Indian, as well as Serveuses Demandees directed by Gylaine Dionne and the soon to be released Love and Savagery, directed by John N. Smith.

Thanks to Cynthia for sending me the news.
