Cowboys and Aliens – Sam Rockwell saddles up

Posted by LiveFor on May 4, 2010

Sam Rockwell working with Jon Favreau again in the adaptation of the comic book, Cowboys and Aliens

It starts shooting in June and Rockwell, who can currently be seen in Iron Man 2 as Justin Hammer, will be joining Daniel Craig, Olivia Wilde and Harrison Ford.

Rockwell will play a bar owner named Doc who joins in the pursuit of the aliens. Once Favreau and the writers — Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Damon Lindelof — learned that Rockwell was interested in the movie, they reconceived and expanded the role, which initially called for a heavy-set man.

Rockwell’s previous experience with Westerns was in 2007’s The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

I’m made up Rockwell will be in this sci-fi Western as I think he is a brilliant actor. From Lawn Dogs, Galaxy Quest through Charlie’s Angels Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, Moon and more he is always great to watch.

UPDATED: Casting News – Yelchin in Fright Night, Harrison Ford in Cowboys and Aliens, Emily Blunt as Catwoman

Posted by LiveFor on April 7, 2010

Rumours, reality who knows. Here’s the skinny.

Fright Night – Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) is in negotiations to star in “Fright Night,” DreamWorks’ remake of the cult 1985 vampire film. Craig Gillespie (Lars and the Real Girl) is helming the new version, which sticks to the concept of a teen being convinced that his new neighbor is a vampire, although no one will believe him. – Heat Vision

Catwoman – Rumour has it that Emily Blunt passed on “Captain America” because she’s hoping to star as Selina Kyle in “Batman 3” accordingto Batman on Film — “if Chris Nolan uses the character,” the source notes. They stress that this is very much a rumour. I do think that Blunt would make a cracking Selina Kyle.

Cowboys and AliensLatino Review have another rumour saying that Harrison Ford could be joining Jon Favreau’s next comic book film, based on an anonymous tip indicating that “Ford was about to join a huge comic book movie to be directed by a director coming off a soon to be released huge comic book movie.”

Favreau did writer Twitter: “Some very cool Cowboys & Aliens casting news coming soon.” Take that however you wish.

UPDATE: “Please stop asking if Harrison Ford is in Cowboys & Aliens. Okay? He is,” wrote Favreau on Twitter. “Please don’t tell anybody.”

What do you think about the possible casting bits? I would love to see Ford back in a sci-fi kind of thing. He needs to make up geek points since the last Indy film.

Sherlock Holmes 2 may start filming this June

Posted by LiveFor on January 13, 2010

News was out yesterday that Robert Downey Jr. had dropped out of Cowboys & Aliens. This was because of scheduling issues and so the possibility of a Sherlock Holmes sequel was raised – the first one, which I thought was excellent and one of the best versions of Holmes on the big screen, had a perfect set up for a sequel.

Today EW.com have heard that a sequel is being fast-tracked based on the success of the first film. (Sherlock’s worldwide gross is fast approaching $300 million.) Michael Robert Johnson, Anthony Peckham and Simon Kinberg wrote the first film butWarner Bros. commissioned a script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney back in September and is now sorting out the cast for a June start date, exactly the time when Cowboys & Aliens is set to begin principal photography.

Great news as I can’t wait to see some more of Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law as Holmes and Watson. No word on whether Guy Ritchie will be back to direct, but I imagine he will be after the success of the first.

What do you want to see in the sequel?

Robert Downey Jr falls off the wagon for Cowboys and Aliens.

Posted by LiveFor on January 12, 2010

Robert Downey Jr. has dropped out of the sci-fi western Cowboys and Aliens according to The LA Times

He and his “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau were to team on the comic book adaptation in which aliens land in Arizona circa the mid-19th century intent on enslaving the local population – until a group of cowboys and Apache Indians fight back.

Now though while Favreau remains attached, Downey has fallen off the project and DreamWorks is seeking a a new star to play Zeke Jackson. The main reason for the departure seems to be scheduling issues. As Iron Man 2 and Due Date have both finished filming then this could possibly mean that a sequel to the excellent Sherlock Holmes could be with us sooner than we think.

Filming is scheduled to begin this year for a planned release Summer 2011.

Do you feel that this film will miss the presence of Downey Jr? Who should take his place?

Cowboys & Aliens will be like The Unforgiven vs Alien

Posted by LiveFor on October 21, 2009

cowboyaliensI have been looking forward to the adaption of the comic book Cowboys & Aliens for a while now. The fact Robert Downey Jr is starring in it and Jon Favreau is directing it added to the coolness factor.

I thought it was going to be a rip roaring Wild West adventure and maybe a little bit cheesy, but in a good way.

However, IGN spoke to screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci about the film and it looks as if we will be seeing something a little different from the graphic novel.

“We went away from it. We took the elements we all loved about it and took our own story, which I can’t tell you too much about,” Kurtzman said.

Talking about Favreau, Kurtzman said, “We’re in prep right now. We’re having an amazing time working with him. He’s the greatest.”

The best thing was when Roberto Orci then described what one of the most difficult things to sort out was, “Tone. How do you make it so it’s not too funny? You hear the title Cowboys & Aliens and think, what is it? Is it Wild, Wild West? The exact same structure and story can kill you if you have the wrong tone. That’s the hard part.” As Kurtzman noted, “It’s not a comedy. What we came to is imagine you’re watching Unforgiven and then the aliens from Alien land.”

Unforgiven and then Alien lands. How cool does that sound. Should lead to some amazing visuals. With the right cinematographer it could also be a thing of beauty…with some nasty alien kills thrown in for good measure.

How do you like the sound of that?

Favreau and Downey Jr saddle up for Cowboys and Aliens

Posted by LiveFor on September 2, 2009

cowboys_and_aliens__3_Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. are going to team up for another comic-book property: “Cowboys & Aliens.”

Downey has been attached to the DreamWorks/Universal project since last summer, when “Iron Man” co-screenwriters Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby were working on the adaptation of the Platinum Studios Comics graphic novel written by Fred Van Lente and Andrew Foley.

In the fall, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who are executive producers on the project, took over scripting, along with “Lost” exec producer Damon Lindelof.

Now Favreau has come on to make “Cowboys” his next directing gig.

The sci-fi Western explores what would happen if the traditional Old West enemies — cowboys and Native Americans — found the prairie attacked by aliens in mid-1800s Arizona. Long in development, the “Aliens” project originally was set up at Universal and DreamWorks in 1997 with Steve Oedekerk writing and directing. It later moved to Columbia, with “Sahara” scribes Joshua Oppenheimer and Thomas Donnelly writing.

Star Trek sequel and Cowboys and Aliens – Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have the news

Posted by LiveFor on June 21, 2009

Orci and Kurtzman are the writers behind J J Abrams recent Star Trek film. Collider had this great interview them. They talk about sequels to the film and their work on Cowboys and Aliens.

We have had discussions about the debate of the exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary or the villain model. That’s an active discussion we’re having right now. In terms of thinking about more than one movie, we want the movie to be self-contained in a way, but we’re discussing the idea of having a couple of threads where if the second movie works, you could pick up into a cohesive whole. No thread more exciting and shocking for me when in Star Trek III you realize that Spock grabbed Bones and downloaded his Katra into him. When I saw Star Trek II I was like, ‘What’s going on here?’ and two years later, you’re watching it and you’re like ‘They’re geniuses! They’re geniuses!’ So we’re trying to think is there a version of that but again, Star Trek II does not rely on that thread, even though it turns out to be a thread. So we’re thinking in those terms.

It’s great to know that sequels are being worked on for Star Trek. It would be great if they could do a couple back to back to have things lead naturally into the third one. I can’t wait to see more adventures from that crew. What do you want to see in the sequel? Khan? Discuss in the forum or leave a comment below.
