Centurion – The opening scene of Neil Marshall’s bloody epic has been seen

Posted by LiveFor on March 2, 2010

Neil Marshall brought us Dog Soldiers, modern horror classic The Descent as well as Doomsday and in his latest outing he attempts to bring to life the legend of The Ninth Legion in Centurion.

The fate of the Legion is a hotly contested subject among historians, the 4000 strong army marched in to Scotland from Hadrians Wall in 117 AD, only to disappear and never be heard from again.

Boasting an impressive cast including Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, David Morrissey and Noel Clarke, the story follows the Legion as they attempt to hunt down and kill the vicious Picts along with their leader, Gorlacon. We posted the trailer a few weeks back here on LFF, but we also managed to catch a sneak peek at Frightfest last weekend and it looks pretty damn awesome! Marshall himself introduced the first five minutes or so, admitting he didn’t stray too far from the myth as the real story is much less interesting.

It opened with a hand tied and shoeless Fassbender sprinting barefooted through the deep snow before the opening battle. As you would expect from Marshall it is bloody and beautiful as the Picts crush the skulls of their foes with an assortment of gigantic weapons while an archer firing a flaming arrow into the cranium of a Roman trying to make an escape drew loud cheers from the crowd in attendance. Marshall confessed that it may be his favourite kill from any of his films along with the body being run over in Doomdsday. The scene ends with Fassbender being spared his life but is taken hostage by the Picts before a savage head butt knocks him unconscious.

After the clip, a few questions followed and it seems the cast didn’t have an easy ride, with the whole thing being filmed during February in the freezing Scottish Highlands. The performance of Dominic West as Ninth Legion leader Gener Virilus is also something to look forward to as according to the director, “appears to be possessed by Oliver Reed” in some scenes. The real highlight was Axelle Carolyn as vicious pict archer, Aeron.

With the latest footage and the trailer, it looks like Marshall will be back to his blood splattering best.

The film hits cinemas April this year. Check out the trailer below and our interview with Marshall regular and Carloyns Straw Man co star Leslie Simpson.

Quintus Dias (Michael Fassbender), a Roman corporal, is taken hostage by the Pict King, Gorlacon and the Ninth are charged with bringing him home and ending Pict domination of Britain. Neil Marshall’s Centurion – Trailer. Unleash Awesome

Posted by LiveFor on February 12, 2010

Written and directed by Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent, Dog Soldiers), the film stars Michael Fassbender, Dominic West, Olga Kurylenko, Liam Cunningham.
The movie speculates on the fate of Rome’s reputedly ‘lost’ Ninth Legion, who in this take are north of Hadrian’s Wall, engaged in a bloody battle and facing a bit of trouble getting out of hostile Pict country.

Looks like some more great action from Mr Marshall. Someone get him the rights to David Gemmell’s Legend. Now that would be cool.

What do you think about the Centurion trailer?

John Carter of Mars – Malcolm in the Middle’s Dad joins Pixar’s first live action movie

Posted by LiveFor on January 14, 2010

Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle, Breaking Bad) has joined the cast of Walt Disney’s “John Carter of Mars.” He will play a Civil War colonel who comes into conflict with Carter.

Andrew Stanton is directing the production, which goes before cameras next week in Utah.

The film also stars Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, True Blood), Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton (In America, Control), Dominic West (300, Chicago), Polly Walker (Patriot Games), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways, George of the Jungle), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, RockNRolla, Kick-Ass), and James Purefoy (Ironclad, Solomon Kane).

The adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series centers on Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch), who is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris (Collins), Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior and Tars Tarkas (Dafoe), a brutal and mirthless green Martian warrior, who possesses the unusual characteristic to feel love and empathy.

Church plays Tal Hajus – “an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.” Strong plays Matai Shang, a godlike leader of the Holy Therns – “that ancient cult which for countless ages has been credited with holding the secret of life and death in their impregnable fastnesses upon the hither slopes of the Mountains of Otz.”

Purefoy will be Kantos Kan, the captain of a Helium warship. Morton will play Sola, the daughter of Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race. West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars. Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark.”

Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris, who produced “WALL-E,” and Colin Wilson are producing “Carter.”

As Cranston is playing a Civil War colonel I don’t imagine him being in the film that much. Presumably near the beginning before Carter gets to Mars.

The movie will be a hybrid of live action and CGI and should be out in 2012.

This may be Pixar’s first foray into the world of live action, but as all of their films have had the story and characters come first I reckon we will be in for something amazing. Plus they have got one hell of a cast for the trilogy.

UPDATED: Thor’s Warrior Three are the Punisher, Gengis Khan and Dorian Gray

Posted by LiveFor on November 17, 2009

Big news on Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is that the Warriors Three have been cast. None of them are Jude Law, Dominic West or Robert De Niro.

Instead the word on the street is that that Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone, Rome), Stuart Townsend (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Queen of the Damned) and Tadanobu Asano (Mongol) are to play the trio. Apparently, Stevenson will take on the role of “Volstagg the Valiant”, Asano will be “Hogun the Grim”, and Townsend will portray “Fandral the Dashing”.

Now this news has come from Variety, but every link I follow on other sites takes me to a dead page on Variety and looking at the list of movie news on their site I just can’t see it listed. It is probably just me being a bit blind today. I am assuming it was on their, but has since been removed. If that is the case then that could mean the news isn’t true or someone has messed up somewhere down the line.

I thought I would share the news anyway. It doesn’t quite ring true to me though as none of these actors have been linked to the film before now. Although Stevenson would be great (I am assuming Volstaag won’t be as big as he often is in the comic) and Asano already looks like Hogun, I feel the week link is Townsend. Just a personal thing, but he doesn’t cut it for me. He was naff as Dorian Gray in the naff LXG and he was down to play Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings but after a few days shooting he was replaced.

There you have it some news which may not actually be correct (hopefully Variety will sort it out), but it may be. Who knows!

UPDATE: Marvel is now confirming the casting – “Fandral will be played by Stuart Townsend. The job of Hogun goes to Tadanobu Asano. And Volstagg will be portrayed Ray Stevenson.”

What do you think of the casting? If not them who would be better in the roles?

John Carter of Mars gets Solomon Kane, Sandman and Lord Blackwood

Posted by LiveFor on September 30, 2009

js1024_JAMES_PUREFOYJames Purefoy (Solomon Kane), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways) and Mark Strong (RocknRolla, Sherlock Holmes) have officially boarded John Carter of Mars, according to Heat Vision. Haden Church had mentioned he would be in it a while ago.

Andrew Stanton is directing Disney’s adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs books. Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins star in the film, alongside Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Polly Walker.

The film centers on a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where he becomes embroiled with the planet’s warring people.

Church plays Tal Hajus, an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.

Purefoy plays Kantos Kan, the captain of the Xavarian, the kingdom of Helium’s grand warship. Strong is Matai Shang, the ruler of the Thems with godlike status.

All in all it is shaping up to have one hell of a cast.

John Carter of Mars has a few more faces

Posted by LiveFor on August 24, 2009

dominic-west-3Not heard anything on Andrew Stanton’s adaption of Edgar Rice Burroughs John Carter of Mars for a while.

However, today The Hollywood Reporter has the news that actors Samantha Morton, Dominic West (The Wire, 300, Punisher War Zone) and Polly Walker (Rome, Clash of the Titans) are joining the cast on Mars.

Taylor Kitsch, Lynn Collins and Willem Dafoe are already part of this project. It follows a Civil War veteran (Kitsch) who gets transported to Mars. While there, he gets caught up in a war between the people of that planet. Collins plays Dejah Thoris, Princess of the Empire of Helium and the story’s love interest. Dafoe plays the Martian Tars Tarkas

Morton will play the role of Sola. She is the daughter of Dafoe’s Tars Tarkas.

West will play Sab Than. He is prince of the Zodangans and he believes he is entitled to rule Mars. Lastly, Walker plays the role of Sarkoja. She is domineering Thark.

The screenplay was written by Stanton and Mark Andrews. The plan is for John Carter of Mars to go into production in early 2010.

Still not sure how the effects are going to be done – will the actors playing the Martians be all motion capture or a mixture of prosthetics and CGI? I suppose the success of James Cameron’s Avatar may have a knock on effect for the look of this film.
