Mel Gibson back with Shane Black in Cold Warrior

Posted by LiveFor on January 28, 2010

Mel Gibson is currently in talks to work with Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black for Universal’s spy thriller Cold Warrior according to Heat Vision.

This will be Black’s second directing job after the absolutely brilliant Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (one of my favourite films of the last decade). Cold Warrior is a story in which a Cold War spy (Gibson) comes out of retirement to confront a domestic terrorism threat from Russia by teaming up with a younger agent. Charles Mondry wrote the script so not sure whether it will have the usual cool funny dialogue that Black’s script often have.

The dealmaking is still in the early stages but it does further Gibson’s plan to get himself back in front of the cameras and back in the public eye.

Gibson is on the slow road back to winning over the public again after all his recent shenanigans. Edge of Darkness, his first on-screen performance since 2002’s Signs, opens this Friday. He has just finished the Jodie Foster-directed black comedy The Beaver and is prepping to shoot his Mexican prison-set thriller How I Spent My Summer Vacation.

Green Lantern – Mark Strong not Jackie Earle Haley could be Sinestro

Posted by LiveFor on January 16, 2010

Looks like HitFlix were wrong. “Sherlock Holmes” actor Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro in the “Green Lantern” movie, according to director Martin Campbell.

Speaking with MTV News during the junket for “Edge of Darkness,” his upcoming action thriller opening January 29, Campbell dismissed rumors that “Watchmen” actor Jackie Earle Haley was in talks for the role.

“No, that’s completely wrong,” said Campbell of the persistent rumor, which popped up again recently despite Haley denying any involvement with the “Green Lantern” movie. “In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro.”

“He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro,” he added. “If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life.”

If negotiations pan out, Strong will have a role in not one but two much-anticipated comic book movies, as he also plays mobster Frank D’Amico in Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar’s “Kick-Ass.” However, Campbell didn’t stop there — he also offered up a list of characters from Green Lantern’s universe making an appearance in the film.

“Well, Kilowog will be,” said Campbell. “Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it’s a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right.”

If Strong becomes Sinestro, he could join recently announced in-negotiations actor Peter Sarsgaard, who’s in talks to play villain Hector Hammond.

In the comic books, Sinestro is a former Green Lantern who trains Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds), only to become one of Jordan’s greatest enemies when he leaves the cosmic police force.

This is splendid news. I really hope Strong takes the role as he would be brilliant as Sinestro.

Leonardo DiCaprio to be Vicky the Viking for Mel Gibson

Posted by LiveFor on December 14, 2009

Okay, it’s not a remake of the old animated kids TV show, but it does involve Vikings.

Mel Gibson will direct and Leonardo DiCaprio will star in an untitled period drama about Viking culture. William Monahan is writing the script according to Variety.

Graham King will produce with Gibson and Tim HeadingtonShooting is expected to begin in fall 2010, meaning that if everything falls into place, it would be the next directing effort for Gibson.

The principals confirmed the project but would not divulge many details. DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts, “Braveheart,” “The Passion of the Christ” and “Apocalypto.”

King teamed with DiCaprio and Monahan in the Oscar-winning drama “The Departed” and just worked with Gibson and Monahan in the Martin Campbell-directed drama “Edge of Darkness.”

The Viking film will be DiCaprio’s first picture with Gibson.

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill,” said King.

Vikings are always cool, however recent films such as Outlander and Pathfinder don’t really show that. Gibson’s Apocalypto shows that he can do the period thing well with a dash of fighting and gore for good measure.

Early days on this one but it does have my interest.

Edge of Darkness – Poster and trailer for the Mel Gibson remake of the Bob Peck BBC series

Posted by LiveFor on October 15, 2009

edgeofdarkness
Directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) Edge of Darkness is a remake of a classic TV series from 1985 – black flowers, melting ice caps, ghosts and more featured in that one – not many other sites seem to be mentioning that which is a shame. The series was also directed by Martin Campbell so at least the film is in good hands. You can buy the series here

The film is written by William Monahan (The Departed) and stars Mel Gibson. He plays a detective and after the sudden death of his activist daughter, he tries to find out why she was killed. He uncovers more than he bargained for. The film also stars Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic, and Shawn Roberts.

Edge of Darkness gets released 29th January 2010

Edge of Darkness – First look at Mel Gibson

Posted by LiveFor on April 23, 2009

Empire have the first picture of Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness

As a detective (Gibson) investigates the death of his activist daughter, he uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence.

Edge of Darkness is directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, Vertical Limit, Casino Royale, and the upcoming Green Lantern movie). The screenplay was co-written by Oscar winner William Monahan (Kingdom of Heaven, The Departed, Body of Lies) and Andrew Bovell (The Book of Revelation, Blessed). It is based on the brilliant BBC series that starred Bob Peck. The film was shot in and around Boston through early 2008 and is due out at some point this year.

Picture of Mel Gibson in Edge of Darkness

Posted by LiveFor on October 20, 2008

This photo of Mel Gibson looking moody while standing at a door was from CinemaBlend.

It’s from the big screen version of the BBC series Edge of Darkness. Mel plays a policeman called Thomas Craven who while looking into the murder of his activist daughter uncovers not only her secret life, but a corporate cover-up and government collusion that attracts an agent tasked with cleaning up the evidence . The original had many shady dealings involving radioactive waste, ghosts, and strange black flowers. You can read more about the original series plot over on Wikipedia.

Ray Winstone is also in the film (playing the role that De Niro turned down) as a CIA agent who is assigned to cover up the murder. Martin Campbell (Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro, Casino Royale) is directing it.

The original BBC series was a cracking show and I hope the film keeps the weirdness that developed throughout the series. Anyone else watch the original show? What did you think of it and what do you think the film will be like?
