Phobos: Club of Fear – Footage from Russian horror

Posted by LiveFor on February 14, 2010

A rainy summer evening…Young people are arriving at the new trendy club named Phobos which is still under construction. Or re-construction – since it’s a former bomb shelter which is reconstructed to become a club. At first, nothing appears wrong, but soon the bunker doors turn out to be locked, and the revellers are trapped underground without any communication. At first it all seems a joke, not realising how dangerous their situation is. Then they get frightened. All of them will need to cope with their fears before the bunker will let them free.

The Silent House (La Casa Muda) – Horror film that is supposedly filmed in one continuous shot

Posted by LiveFor on January 27, 2010

I am not sure if this horror film from Uruguay was actually done in a single 74 minute sequence shot with not cuts – often in these kind of things there are very clever cuts that you don’t notice (Hitchcock’s Rope is a classic example of using long takes) – but it is a nice selling point. It was also filmed on a digital SLR, specifically with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.

Laura and her father Wilson settle down in a cottage that seems to be off the beaten track in order to update it since its owner (will soon put the house up for sale. They will spend the night there in order to start the repairs the following morning. Everything seems to go smoothly until Laura hears a sound that comes from outside and gets louder and louder on the upper floor of the house. Wilson goes up to see what is going on while she remains downstairs on her own, waiting for her father to come down.

It is also supposedly based on an real event that took place in 1944 in an old farmhouse where were found two brutally tortured bodies, without their tongues. Disturbing photographs were the key to solving the bloody crime.

What did you think of the trailer? One to watch? Could it be done in one shot?

This isn’t the first film done in one shot. Many have claimed to be including another one out this year called Cut. However, Emma Green let me know about one from 2002 called Russian Ark which sounds quite good. Do you know of any earlier examples?

Los Paranoicos (The Paranoids) – Poster and trailer for Argentinian Comedy

Posted by LiveFor on January 23, 2010

A loser with a successful friend discovers his luck might change as long as he doesn’t mind betraying his buddy in this edgy comedy from Argentina.

Luciano (Daniel Hendler) is a neurotic and accident-prone children’s entertainer who is struggling to launch a career as a screenwriter when he’s not fretting about his health. After Luciano accidentally puts his performing partner Sherman (Martin Feldman) in the hospital, he’s unable to do shows for a few weeks and is wondering what to do when his old friend Manuel (Walter Jakob) returns to Buenos Aires for a visit.

Manuel is the star of a popular television show in Spain, and he’s dating a beautiful woman, Sophia (Jazmin Stuart), who comes along for the ride. Manuel helps Luciano land a writing assignment, but it’s uncomfortably obvious he’s only helping his pal out of a sense of obligation and doesn’t believe in his talent.

As Luciano struggles to meet his deadline, Manuel is called away on business for a few days, and Sophia, a stranger in town, spends some time with Luciano while her boyfriend is away. Sophia finds Luciano’s eccentricities endearing rather than annoying, and he soon realizes he has the opportunity to steal his friend’s lover away.

Holy Star Blazers! Live action Space Battleship Yamoto footage

Posted by LiveFor on January 1, 2010

SPACE BATTLESHIP ヤマトis the live action adaption of the old Japanese cartoon that was redubbed and called Star Blazers in the West. I remember watching some of it as a kid and I loved the fact it was an old ocean going battleship that was turned into a spacecraft (are you listening Peter Berg?) It was a cracking design concept.

Set in 2220, the pic will depict the evacuation of 300 million people from Earth to avoid certain death from an expanding black hole. The Yamato, a space battleship, is leading the rescue fleet when it is attacked by an alien force.

Takuya Kimura, the member of the SMAP entertainment unit known to Japanese fans as “KimuTaku,” will star as the main hero Susumu Kodai in the remake of the space opera classic. Kimura also starred as the title character in the Howl’s Moving Castle animated film released in 2004.

Check out the footage below. It looks bloody good.

Space Battleship Yamato will be released in December 2010 in Japan.

Trained in clandestine combat from childhood, the Jinyiwei were masters of the 14 Blades, eight being for torture, five for killing, and the last blade being reserved for suicide when a mission failed.
