Back in April news came out that Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries) was going the direct On the Road. This adaption has been in development hell for years, but things are moving forward. We knew Garrett Hedland (Tron Legacy) is going to play drifter Dean Moriarty and Sam Riley (Control) is down to play, Sal.
Now it looks as if Moriarty’s wife has been cast in the shape of Twilight’s Kristen Stewart.
She had this to say while talking to USA Today. “I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in On the Road. So that’s a big deal.”
Not sure if these are the right choices for the film, but that could just be because they don’t fit with the look of how I always imagined the character.
Still there is one good thing about the casting. It should make a whole new generation look into the works of Jack Kerouac and anything that gets people reading new things is cool in my book.
Jack Kerouac’s On The Road is one of the classic tales from the beat generation. I read it way back in university and enjoyed it – never read it since though. Turns out Francis Ford Coppola bought the rights to the book way back in the seventies, but it has been a long journey to get it near to the big screen.
Now Empire have the news that Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy) is in talks for the role of Dean Moriarty.
Coppola hired Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles and scriptwriter Jose Rivera way back in 2005. Now it looks as if the film may begin shooting this summer. We shall have to wait and see.
I don’t really see Hedlund as Moriarty. Just doesn’t seem the right choice for the role, but what do I know.
After Hugo Weaving was recently announced to possibly be playing the evil Red Skull in the Captain America film news is out today that Steve Rogers has still not been cast.
Instead yet another name has been added to the list and this name is Ryan Phillippe (Way of the Gun, Franklyn, MacGruber, Breach, Crash).
HitFix have the news that Phillippe has joined the possible Steves including Mike Vogel (Cloverfield, She’s Out of My League), Garret Hedlund (Tron Legacy), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, The Losers).
I am getting a bit fed up with all the maybes, but I’m taking it as a god good sign that Marvel Studios want to get Cap just right for the film.
Do you think Phillippe would make a good Captain America?
Yesterday news was out that Krasinski was the favourite for the role of Captain America. Like so many stories on the internet it turns out this is not quite true as he is apparently out of the running for the role according to Deadline (although that could also be misinformation). I know lots of people will breathe easy with that news. Also out of the running are Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Michael Cassidy (Privileged) and Patrick Flueger (Brothers).
Who does that leave? Out of the original five shortlisted only Mike Vogel (Cloverfield) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy) are left, but Marvel has also added Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, Push, The Losers) and Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill) to the mix. Out of the first two Vogel has more of the look and if Tron Legacy is a big success Hedlund may have scheduling conflicts in the future.
Chris Evans could possibly play the role, but as he was the Human Torch that could go against him, although as there are plans to reboot the Fantastic Four with an all new cast then that may not hinder him. As for Bethel, I haven’t got a clue as I’ve never seen his work.
Of course it could turn out to be none of them. Out of those mentioned who do you feel would be a good Steve Rogers?
Finally, the trailer is out for one of my most anticipated movies this year. A great trailer, full of mystery and cool imagery. Jeff Bridges as the younger, evil Clu (above). Olivia Wilde as the woman of the piece. Michael Sheen is the nightclub owner clad in white and we see Bruce Boxleitner as Alan Bradley – his counterpart, Tron is meant to be in the film so I am assuming he will have been youngified for the role as Bridges was.
Yes it is very poor quality and it is best seen in 3D, but here is your first look at the new Tron Legacy trailer. The official release is some time this week.
Yesterday was the first photo of 5 to be released on the Tron Legacy Facebook page before the new trailer debuts.
Today we have the second and it shows Flynn’s son (Garrett Hedlund) outside his Father’s old arcade. This was the one in the original that was full of kids playing Space Paranoid’s and Flynn (Jeff Bridges) was king.
A few days ago there was a surprise screening of the trailer for the new Tron Legacy film. Unfortunatley I didn’t get to see it but Sci-Fi Wire had this description of what many of us missed. The trailer will debut in front of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland when it opens on Friday.
The 3-D trailer opens with Sam (Garrett Hedlund) speaking with an older Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner – you can see what he looks like in the film here) atop the Encom Building. Alan says he received a text from Sam’s missing father, Kevin Flynn, from a number that was disconnected 20 years ago. Bradley says Kevin was on the cusp of a technological breakthrough when he went missing and that he would never have left that behind or left Sam behind. Bradley then gives Sam keys to Flynn’s Arcade. Sam speeds off on his motorcycle and arrives at the arcade, which we see has been closed for years.
Sam opens up the arcade, discovers a secret door behind a “Tron” game machine and discovers Kevin’s lab. He wipes dust from a black-and-white screen, which is still active. The shot cuts to the glowing laser we remember from the first movie—the one that digitized Kevin Flynn the first time he entered the virtual world—and the screen goes black.
We are then in a fully realized- 3-D black-and-neon Tron world, with a giant lighted new-generation Recognizer, before which stand three tiny figures in lighted black suits.
We see Sam in a light suit ascending in some kind of round illuminated platform, then quick cuts of
♦Olivia Wilde’s Quorra in a black light suit, reclining on a divan;
♦a light cycle speeding toward the horizon, with a massive lit-up Tron city in the distance;
♦a young-looking black-clad Jeff Bridges as Clu emerging onto a platform, accompanied by Jarvis and other programs;
♦combatants, including Sam, in light suits, flinging white-lighted discs at each other;
♦a skidding light vehicle (did it have four wheels??);
♦Michael Sheen as Castor in a white jumpsuit with a shock of white hair, playing air guitar on an illuminated white cane, standing atop a platform – Sheen talks more about his character and the club here;
♦a white-suited combatant with two illuminated discs;
♦a blond woman in a tight white light suit (a siren?);
♦Sam walking up a ramp toward a bright light (a new Tron arena? Click on the image below for a larger version).
We hear Sam’s voice:
“Dad.”
Kevin/Bridges’ voice: “Sam.”
“Long time.”
“You have no idea.”
At the end, we see two light cycles smashing into each other at high speed, ending with a closeup of Sam’s face as he speeds directly toward the camera.
The trailer was backed by electronic music composed by Daft Punk just for the 3-D teaser trailer
