Green Lantern – Angela Bassett to play Amanda Waller

Posted by LiveFor on March 25, 2010

Some interesting news from the Green Lantern film and possible hint that a Suicide Squad film may soon be in the offing. Angela Bassett (Strange Days, What’s Love Got to do With It) is joining the cast of the Martin Campbell directed comic book movie. Heat Vision had the news.

Bassett is playing Dr. Amanda Waller, a government agent who headed up the Suicide Squad, a government-run group of captured supervillains performing tasks in exchange for eventual freedom. She also was high up in the Checkmate organisation (the very first comic book Green Lantern also cropped up in that series). Still no word on whether the Squad will appear in the film, but could lead to some nice little Easter Eggs for comic book fans.

Back in February 2009 was the news that Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Greyskull, Green Arrow: Supermax) was adapting the DC Comics property Suicide Squad as a feature film for Warner Bros. Then the Squad’s creator, John Ostrander, spoke about a Suicide Squad film last March.

Of course in the comics Waller was a rather large lady and was nicknamed The Wall. I doubt they’ll be putting Bassett in a fat suit though.

Pam Grier had been playing Waller in Smallville and had voiced her in the Justice League cartoons so it is a bit of a shame she didn’t get the role in the Green Lantern film.

Green Lantern began filming in New Orleans (check out the first pic of Ryan Reynolds on set) with a cast that includes Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard and Tim Robbins.

Green Lantern – Filming begins today and Jango Fett to play Abin Sur

Posted by LiveFor on March 15, 2010

There have been test shoots over the past few weeks, but now official filming has begun on the DC Comics film, Green Lantern.

On Location Vacations had the news:

“Green Lantern will be shooting a bar scene at the Old Point Bar, 545 Patterson Drive, New Orleans during the day”

If any readers in New Orleans should get a chance to get over there for some photos then send them my way and I’ll get them on the site.

Heat Vision also have some casting news on the Martin Campbell directed film.

Kiwi filmmaker-actor Taika Waititi (Eagle vs Shark) and Kiwi actor Temuera Morrison (Shortland Street, Once Were Warriors, Barb Wire, Jango Fett in Star Wars Episode 2 and he’s just finished filming Tracker with Ray Winstone).

Waititi plays Thomas Kalmaku the best friend of Hal Jordan. Tom was an engineer working on the planes that Jordan flew. Back before things were better the Inuit character was nicknamed Pie Face (after the Eskimo Pie ice creams), but this has since been changed in the comics. Tom also developed super powers in the comics, that power being the ability to bring out the best of people. I assume that won’t appear in the film.

Morrison is playing Abin Sur. Sur is the Green Lantern who crashes to Earth and upon dying makes Hal Jordan the new Green Lantern.

Shaping up nicely and glad they’ve finally started filming it.

Green Lantern – Concept art – Look it’s Abin Sur, Tomar Re and Kilowog, you lousy Poozer!

Posted by LiveFor on January 27, 2010

That is the current situation for the Martin Campbell directed adaption of the DC comic. Sinestro probably won’t be the main bad guy (like the comics he’ll start out as a Lantern) and Legion could well be one of the bad guys along with Hammond, but what about the other members of the Green Lantern Corp? Well it looks as if Cosmic Book News scored the first look at some concept art for Abin Sur (the Green Lantern who’s death leads to Hal Jordan getting the power ring), Tomar Re and my favourite, Green Lantern trainer, Kilowog.

The DC Database gives a quick background to Kilowog for those not up to speed on who he is (mind you due to the convoluted DC continuity it may mean nothing to you if you’ve never read the comics):

Bolovax Vik was one of the most crowded planets in the universe; it had 16 billion residents with a communal mind. Kilowog was a geneticicist and one of Bolovax’s most brilliant minds. After the previous Lantern, Branwill, died, Kilowog was chosen to be a member of the Green Lantern Corps. It was a great honor, but it meant leaving Bolovax and going into space on missions; this was tantamount to exile for a Bolovaxian. Nevertheless, Kilowog carried out his duties with pride. He would go on to be one of the Corps’ best recruiters and trainers.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Bolovax Vik was destroyed. His ring automatically protected Kilowog, but not his people. Acting quickly, he placed all 16 billion life energies into his ring. By sheer force of his will they survived until Kilowog found a suitable planet to release his people. Sadly, the planet was soon destroyed by Sinestro. Kilowog could not rescue them again. He was now alone for good

Cosmic Book News also have the story from the 2008 Green Lantern script. It makes interesting reading but as we don’t yet know whether this will be the exact script they are using there could well be major spoilers involved.

The concept art for all three looks a lot like the comic book characters which is a good thing.

Concept art is always great to see but the final look depends upon who will be working on the effects. Variety have the news that Karen Goulekas (The Day After Tomorrow) Kent Houston (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Jim Berney (I Am Legend) will be in charge of making the effects look real. Sony Pictures Imageworks will also be the lead visual effects studio on the film. They worked on Watchmen and Superman Returns. All of those films had their flaws, but in the main they had excellent special effects so Green Lantern should look splendid.

Green Lantern is due out on 17th June 2011.

The question is who will voice Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar Re?

Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern – Fan Art

Posted by LiveFor on July 16, 2009

Josh MC created this cool picture. It’s fan made so not official in any way, but it gives us a good idea as to what we may be seeing on the big screen before too long.

What do you think of the pic?

Deadpool is Green Lantern

Posted by LiveFor on July 11, 2009

Warner Bros. has settled on Ryan Reynolds as its choice to play Green Lantern. The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.

Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds’ option would have expired end of day Friday.

THR say that if the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. He recently starred in a comic book movie, Fox’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he played “the merc with a mouth” Deadpool. The character is now being developed for a spin-off to which Reynolds is attached. He also played Marvel’s vampire hunter Hannibal King in Blade: Trinity.

Out of Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake, Ryan Reynolds is the best choice for Hal Jordan. Unexpected, but the best choice. Note though that the deal has yet to be fully completed, but it does look very likely. Hopefully, it won’t effect the Deadpool movie too much. Luckily they sre characters from different universes plus Deadpool is scarred and masked for most of the time.

How do you feel about Reynolds as Hal Jordan?

Who will the bearer of a Black Lantern?

Posted by LiveFor on June 17, 2009

DC are currently running a story line in Green Lantern that involves a lot more Lantern Corps – Red Lanterns for anger, Pink for love, Blue for hope etc.

The Black Lanterns are those that represent death and it looks as if all the dead heroes and villains will be zombiefied and rise again as Black Lanterns. The picture above from Green Lantern #43 (via DC’s Source blog) shows just who can expect to see. It will feature the birth of the first Black Lantern. “Discover who he is and just what his connection to death — and in turn, the Black Lantern Corps — really is.”

I’ve been enjoying the series so far for its huge scope and cosmic sensibilities. Hal Jordan, last I saw, had both a Green and a Blue power ring. I do have a bit of a dreadful feeling though that Hal will get all of the rings and become a Rainbow Lantern or maybe a White Lantern. White Lantern may work.

Green Lantern moving forward with a budget of $150 million.

Posted by LiveFor on April 16, 2009

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. and DC Comics’ Green Lantern will be made at Fox Studios Australia in Sydney, New South Wales.

Martin Campbell, director of “Casino Royale,” will be at the helm of the comic book’s big screen adaptation, working from a script by Greg Berlanti and Michael Green. Donald Deline will produce with a reported budget of $150 million.

Quite a big budget and it will go a long way down under as it should receive the Australian federal government’s 15% location rebate on top of the incentives supplied by the New South Wales government to bring the project to Fox.

The film will also create around 500 jobs and include a “substantial investment” in digital effects work in Australia.

Pre-production on “Green Lantern” is set to begin in July, and filming scheduled to start in November. Warner hopes to release the film in December 2010.

Great news that this is moving forward. I do hope they keep it space bound for a big chunk of the film. Let’s see some major sci-fi in a comic book film.

Still no word on who will play Hal Jordan. Any ideas?
