Neill Blomkamp doing another original sci-fi film next

Posted by LiveFor on October 23, 2009

neillblomkampMedia Rights Capital has committed to the next film by District 9 writer/director Neill Blomkamp. That low budget debut was a huge success so no wonder.

The untitled science fiction film will begin production by mid-2010. Bill Block will produce according to Variety.

Block, the CEO of QED, was first to commit funding to “District 9” before Sony’s Worldwide Acquisitions Group acquired the film based on a Blomkamp-created graphic novel. “District 9” became a breakout summer hit for Sony in the South African-born filmmaker’s feature debut.

The most surprising move, considering this is only his second feature, is that MRC is giving Blomkamp creative freedom and a production commitment. The director and Block will also get an ownership stake in the finished product.

Blomkamp will immediately start writing and preparing the visual effects. The film will be modest by sci-fi standards, but it will certainly cost more than “District 9,” the under-$30 million budget film that grossed more than $184 million worldwide.

Blomkamp made “District 9” under the guidance of Peter Jackson, who previously godfathered the director’s effort to make his feature debut on “Halo,” before the Microsoft vidgame adaptation was unplugged by Universal and Fox over budget concerns. Blomkamp said he harbors no bitterness over that slight, and sparked to an MRC scenario that guaranteed he’d be able to transfer his vision to the screen.

“MRC is letting me make the film I want to make and that is by far the most important thing here,” Blomkamp said. “The film will hopefully be commercial, but it is very much a singular film, that comes directly from me. `District 9’ was a bit different. I was learning the process then, under Peter Jackson’s wing. He had control, but was awesome enough to let me make the film I wanted to. Bill’s producing this with MRC, so the difference is Pete’s involvement.

“Pete was kind about pushing me for `Halo,’ which was a huge opportunity and huge risk. It was neither of our fault that the film collapsed. Creatively, I don’t operate from a place of revenge, so when I got into `District 9,’ `Halo’ was long gone from my mind. From Pete having such faith in me, to getting to know the people at Sony through the process of `District 9,’ I couldn’t be happier with the way things worked out.”

“I’m not particularly interested in massive budget films, or creating huge spectacles that some young directors might be attracted to,” he said. “Hopefully, this will be a bit unique, very much a reflection of me. It is absolutely another science fiction film, quite different from `District 9,’ but some of the blending of genres and the tone might be within the same realm.”

Glad to see that Blomkamp is not going the sequel route with his next film and it is always good to see something new and original.

As usual I’ll keep you posted on the project.

Halo goes Animatrix

Posted by LiveFor on July 23, 2009

Microsoft’s new project, which it’s announcing Thursday at Comic-Con for the first time, is a series of seven shorts set in the Halo universe and done in Japanese anime style.

Involved are the animation studios Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio4[Degrees]C, and Toei Animation as well as the creative director helping to oversee production for Microsoft: Shinji Aramaki, director of “Appleseed” and “Appleseed Ex Machina.”

Microsoft is financing and overseeing production through 343 Industries, its new internal division that’s in charge of everything Halo. It’s planning to preview them on the online gaming service Xbox Live this fall and has then enlisted Warner Bros. — the game companies still need a little help from Hollywood — to release them on DVD, Blu-ray and other digital platforms in early 2010.

Aramaki is directing his own short that tells the history of the Spartans, a warrior class in the game’s fictional universe that main character Master Chief is part of. Though Halo isn’t particularly popular in Japan — most of its 27 million units sold have been in North America and Europe — Aramaki said he’s a player and was immediately interested in the possibility.

“I liked that this would be an anthology of human stories told from different characters’ perspectives,”
he explained.

Frank O’Connor, creative director of 343, gave a peek at some of the other Halo Legend shorts. Studio4 C’s project, tentatively called “Origins,” is a two-parter that’s about 30 minutes long in total and tells the entire 100,000 year history of the Halo universe. Another, from Toei, is the only one outside of the official canon and pokes fun at some of the game’s characters.

Within the general anime style, the visual look of the projects differs widely.

“It’s a wildly varied genre, but anime creators do things with weapons and vehicles and technology nobody else does, and that marries very well with Halo,” he explained. “It’s amazing to see some of the new stuff they’re introducing and how neatly it maps to the visual aesthetics in the Halo universe.”

Microsoft gave the production companies largely free reign in how the shorts looked, but O’Connor and others were heavily involved in developing the stories and making sure all the details were right.

HaloLegends2 “Depending on the studio, we did everything from writing the stories to feeding them with characters and scenarios they could explore,” he said.

At first, he was a bit wary about revealing any details, but O’Connor quickly granted that when Microsoft releases a trailer for Halo Legends at its Comic-Con panel, fans are sure to pick apart every frame.

“I think the core ‘Halo’ fans will recognize key moments from the universe never shown in the game,” he said. “They’re moments where people wanted more depth. That’s where this fits.”

District 9 – Teaser Trailer is finally with us

Posted by LiveFor on May 1, 2009

The film depicts a fictional world where extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa. Wikus (Sharlto Copley) is a Multi-National United agent who becomes infected by alien biotechnology. He must go on the run from the oppressive government into District 9, a internment camp where “non-humans” have been forced to live since landing on Earth nearly 30 years ago.

District 9 is both written and directed by first-timer Neill Blomkamp, a South African filmmaker who previously directed the Halo: Arms Race shorts. Peter Jackson is the Producer.
