Heavy Metal – Who is writing and directing the sci-fi anthology?

Posted by LiveFor on March 11, 2010

Been a while since there has been any movement on the new Heavy Metal sci-fi anthology animated movie. Now author Neal Asher (check out my interview with him) has some more info on who will be directing and writing the various sections for the film – some top directors involved. I wonder if Cameron’s would have any ties to the Avatar universe?

Pre-release Information – A $50 million budget 3D CG animated movie based on the magazine. This probably won’t have any stories from the first 1981 movie, however like the first one, it will feature around seven or eight different stories. Each segment will be directed by a different person. The title to this movie hasn’t been chosen yet. This current title is just a placeholder.

Main Crew:
Executive Producer – David Fincher and James Cameron
Producer – Kevin Eastman and Tim Miller
Director – David Fincher (1 segment)
Director – James Cameron (1 segment)
Director – Zack Snyder (1 segment, a story that Kevin Eastman wrote)
Director – Gore Verbinski (1 segment)
Director – Mark Osborne (1 segment, a comedy with Jack Black)
Director – Tim Miller (1 segment)
Director – Jeff Fowler (1 segment)
Director – Kevin Eastman (tentatively 1 segment)
Director – Guillermo del Toro (tentatively 1 segment)
Director – Rob Zombie (tentatively 1 segment)

Writer – Marc Laidlaw (1 segment)
Writer – Steve Niles (1 segment)
Writer – Joe Haldeman (1 segment)
Writer – Neal Asher (1 segment)
Writer – Kevin Eastman (1 segment, a story that Zack Snyder will direct)
? – Jack Black (a comedy segment that Mark Osborne will direct. No details on how he’s involved, but most likely will be an actor)
? – Jhonen Vasquez (no details on how he’s involved, but most likely will be a writer)

Which of the writers and directors excites you the most?

Enter the Dragon – Remake could star Stephen Chow, Frank Black and Anne Hathaway

Posted by LiveFor on February 23, 2010

Stephen Chow is the great actor / director behind films such as Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Chow had been due to appear as Kato in The Green Hornet film, but that all fell apart. News on the grapevine is that he is about to make his English speaking debut in a film called Tai Chi. Twitch had the news that this is to be a remake of the classic Bruce Lee film, Enter the Dragon.

If this new story is more than a rumour then the remake will co-star Jack Black and Anne Hathaway.

Channel News Asia says that Tai Chi will have a $60 million budget and will be produced by the China Film Group Corporation and “an unnamed American film company.”

The film tells the story of a Chinese migrant in the US (played by Chow) who works as a dishwasher in Chinatown and hides his skills as a Tai Chi master. He is forced to stand up to gangsters who oppress his fellow migrants and later gets invited to start martial arts schools to share his knowledge.

Chow, a big fan of the late kung fu legend Bruce Lee, reportedly went to great lengths to make sure the script was perfect. He continously refined the script for almost two years and pushed back the production date.

The only other recent news about an Enter the Dragon remake was for one starring Rain (Ninja Assassin). That one is by writer/director Kurt Sutter and titled Awaken the Dragon but things have been quiet for that one.

I still see no need to remake Enter the Dragon, but if anyone is going to do it then Chow could just be the one to do it. I do hope that he doesn’t try and make it a comedy though as that just wouldn’t seem right. As for Black and Hathaway’s involvement I could see it working, but having Black involved would again raise the prospect of this remake have some comedy elements to it. Mind you part of me would want to see him as the Jim Kelly character with the big afro, but that is a very small part of me and even that knows it is wrong. If Black was going to play one of the main characters then I suppose he has more of a resemblance to John Saxon.

If this does happen would you be happen to see a Stephen Chow version of Enter the Dragon? What would have to be in it to work and who could play the villainous Han?

Man-Witch

Posted by LiveFor on June 15, 2009

Jack Black comedy Man-Witch looks like it’s headed into production according to scribe’s Josh Stolberg’s official blog.

“It’s looking like Man-Witch is a go at Warner Bros. I can’t say much about it at this point because the casting hasn’t been officially announced but it’s looking really, really good” says Stolberg (“Good Luck Chuck,” “Piranha 3D”).

Black plays a schoolteacher who suddenly discovers he has witch-like abilities. Taken in by a coven, he is persuaded to attend a school for witches, only to discover that his classmates are all girls.

Todd Phillips (“Road Trip,” “The Hangover”) is down to direct.

Will the Green Lantern be Bradley Cooper?

Posted by LiveFor on May 6, 2009

There has been a lot of talk about who will be donning the Green and reciting the Green Lantern oath – Anton Yelchin (Star Trek, Charlie Bartlett), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Jack Black (Year One), David Boreanaz (Buffy, Angel, Bones), Ryan Gosling (The Notebook), Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Serenity) to name but a few (my favourite would be Fillion).

Now another name has been thrown into the wilds of the internet and that name is Bradley Cooper. You may not know the name but you will have seen his face – Alias, The Hangover, Failure to Launch, Yes Man, He’s Just Not That Into You, and The Midnight Meat Train.

He has only been a lead in the last one, which was a horror, and all the rest have been mainly comedy roles so it is a bit of a surprise that he has been included to play Hal Jordan.

Here is what Drew McWeeney a.k.a. Moriarty on AICN, has to say about Cooper.

HitFix can exclusively report that Bradley Cooper is now one of the guys most likely to don the suit and slip on the power ring as The Green Lantern for director Martin Campbell.

Let’s be clear: they have not hired him yet. But the process is far enough along that this is more than just a meeting or some spot on a wish list. Keep in mind that Campbell likes to see a lot of people when he’s casting… and even when he’s screen-testing, he seems willing to explore as many options as possible… but with the film set to shoot later this summer, they’ve got to start making their choices, and now’s the time to put people in front of the camera and see who really works in the suit.

As the quote says Bradley is “one of the guys” so nothing has been decided. I personally just don’t see him as Earth’s Green Lantern, but he can act.

Would Bradley make a good Green Lantern? If not him who would you like to see play the part?

Who should play Green Lantern?(online surveys)
