Predators – First look at Rodriguez and Antal’s film at SXSW. Jason Statham’s 13 to premiere there.

The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced Austin-based filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal will present a “First Look” at their upcoming motion picture Predators, at SXSW on March 12, 2010. SXSW also announced the world premiere of Géla Babluani’s 13, the previously announced Super Secret TBA as part of the SX Fantastic midnight section. The 2010 event will take place March 12 – March 20, 2010.

The special presentation of Predators will take place at the Alamo Ritz Theater in downtown Austin, at 10:15pm. Doors open at 9:45pm, and the special event is only open to SXSW Badge-holders on a first-come, first-served basis. An audience Q&A follows the unveiling. SXSW Badges are still available for purchase at http://www.sxsw.com/attend.

A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez’s creative auspices at the filmmaker’s Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators. In addition to Adrien Brody, the film stars Topher Grace, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne. Co-starring are Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali.

Predators was written by Alex Litvak & Mike Finch based upon characters created by Jim Thomas & John Thomas. The producers are Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellàn. Twentieth Century Fox releases Predators in theaters everywhere July 9, 2010.

Commented Robert Rodriguez: “My director Nimród Antal and I are excited to bring this first look at Predators to Austin’s SXSW Film Festival, an event that’s become vital to the filmmaking scene. Austin is my home and I’m proud that Predators was conceived and filmed here.”

Said Film Conference & Festival Producer Janet Pierson: “Robert Rodriguez and Troublemaker Studios are a continued fountain of filmmaking creativity and innovation here in Austin, TX. We couldn’t be more proud to present the unveiling of Predators at our 2010 event.”

Additionally, SXSW has revealed the identity of the Super Secret TBA in its SX Fantastic section – the anticipated world premiere of Géla Babluani’s 13 will take place at Midnight on Saturday, March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar Theater.

13, a remake of the 2005 French film 13 Tzameti, also directed by Babluani, stars Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Ben Gazzara, and Alexander Skarsgard. The thriller follows the story of Vince, who unwittingly becomes involved in a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors.

2010 marks the second year of the SX Fantastic section, a series of mind-bending international midnight films at SXSW programmed by Tim League, founder of the Austin-based Fantastic Fest. This year features a diverse slate of five action, thriller, sci-fi and just plain fantastic films from all corners of the world. For more information on the SX Fantastic section, as well as the rest of the Festival program, visit www.sxsw.com/film.

Over the course of nine days, the 2010 Festival will host a total of 134 features, including 64 world premieres, and will open with the world premiere of Kick-Ass, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Aaron Johnson, Cholë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicolas Cage. SXSW will also host more than 80 Film Conference panels, which will take place Friday, March 12 – Tuesday, March 16. For the complete program of films and panels, as well as schedule information, visit http://my.sxsw.com.

Luke Goss joins Death Race

Posted by LiveFor on January 6, 2010

Luke Goss will star in Universal’s direct-to-DVD sequel to the 2008 Death Race according to Moviehole.

In director Roel Reiné’s Death Race : Frankenstein Lives, Goss (“Blade II”, “Hellboy II : The Golden Army”, Bros) plays Luke, the young man that donned the ‘Frankenstein’ mask prior to Jensen Ames (Jason Statham’s character in Paul W.S Anderson’s “Death Race”).

Luke, the right-hand man for a notorious mobster, is busted for killing a cop in the process of robbing a bank. Once behind the bars of Terminal Island, the confident newcomer is roped into entering the ‘big race’ by it’s green-eyed producer.

UPDATED: Death Race spawns a sequel – Actually a prequel

Posted by LiveFor on November 13, 2009

Death-Race-MachineGunPaul W S Anderson – a man, a filmmaker and much maligned. I’ve talked about his work before and he often has good ideas and a nice look to some of his films, but they often miss the mark.

Death Race starring Jason Statham wasn’t great, but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It probably helped that the car scenes used as much physical FX as they could. I thought that was it though for the Death Race.

Now according to STYD Universal has officially given Death Race 2 the green light based on a script by Tony Giglio.

The follow-up, a prequel looking into the past of the race car driver known as Frankenstein, will probably go straight to DVD.

It is based on an idea by Anderson, but no word on who will be directing or whether The Stath will be in it although I doubt it as it’s a prequel.

Spoiler TV has the character details. Here are a few:

[CARL “LUKE” LUCAS]
In his 20s-30, American, European, British, Australian, Latino, etc., handsome and confident, with a hint of danger, Lucas has been in trouble since the age of 12. Right-hand man to a notorious mobster for twelve years, he is sent away for life
after killing a cop in the course of robbing a bank. Offered a deal by the DA if he turns state’s evidence, Lucas opts to take his chances behind bars, where he soon captures the attention of a violence-peddling television producer. Possessed of some serious driving skills, assertive, strong, and charismatic, Lucas is a natural fit for the ultimate test, aka, the “Death Race.”

[SEPTEMBER JONES]
In her 20s – early 30s, a model turned journalist, September is is “insatiably ambitious and eye-poppingly gorgeous,” a woman who knows how to use what she’s got to get what she wants. She’s callous and self-serving, dressed provocatively, with the soul of an ice-pick, but the brains to know how to market violence to the masses. When ratings for her gladiator-style television show begin plummeting, September is quick to come up with the “Death Race” concept, thrilled by its stunning success

[ELIZABETH JAYNE CASE]
In her 20s – early 30s, and sexy, she is a card girl for the fight matches, later a navigator when the prisoners are forced to test their driving skills. Intelligent (valedictorian of her high school class), decent, with a good heart, Case landed in prison after killing her abusive cop husband. Quick to come to the aide of girl in peril or help Lucas outwit an adversary, she’s a courageous, admirable young woman. Teamed with Lucas for a death race, the chemistry soon heats up between the two

[BIG BILL]
In his 30s, African American, a steroid-enhanced mountain man, head of the United Blood Nation, the African American gang in Terminal Island…1 speech & 5 lines, 9 scenes

[LISTS]
In his 20s, nicknamed “Lists” because he’s a font of information about almost any subject, quickly spewing lists of details. Convicted of matricide, he’s a newbie at the prison and obviously scared. He later teams up with Gunner, becoming part of Lucas’ pit crew

[14K]
Named for his fourteen “kills,” Asian, in his 30s – 40s, a “combination of Bruce Lee and Genghis Khan,” he is the leader of The Triads, the most powerful Chinese gang on the planet (or at least in the prison).sptv050769..1 speech & 1 line, 6 scenes

What would you like to see in the Death Race sequel?

Judge Dredd – Could Gerard Butler be heading to Mega City 1?

Posted by LiveFor on September 29, 2009

Gerard_ButlerI recently posted the fact that the comic book artist Jock (The Losers) was still working on the concept art for the new Judge Dredd film. Alex Garland (The Beach) has written the script and things are slowly moving along.

As we all know Stallone played him in the previous version (it had a great opening 10 minutes and then it just got ugly). The big question for the new one is who will they get to play Judge Dredd?

I could see someone like Bruce Campbell (he has the chin), Ron Perlman (he doesn’t mind covering his face and we all know Dredd never takes his helmet off – well not on screen anyway), Thomas Jane, Billy Zane or Jason Statham.

I have received a few emails that suggest Gerard Butler (Gamer, 300, Law Abiding Citizen) is interested in the role and has been in talks. Now I have looked around the web for confirmation of this, but so far I cannot find anything else. However, the emails I have received have all come from different unrelated sources, a couple of whom are usually spot on.

For the moment mark this one down as a great big rumour though – it is still early days and I personally don’t think they are as far along as casting.

If anyone happens to know Gerard could you ask him if this is true. I will keep digging and let you know if I find anything more.

Do you think Gerard Butler would make a good Judge Dredd? If not him who else could it be?
