The A-Team’s Murdoch – Could it be Sharlto Copley?

Posted by LiveFor on September 10, 2009

copleyThrough a reliable source, has learned exclusively that an offer has been made to rising star ‘District 9’ Star Sharlto Copley for the role.

There is no confirmation that Copley has accepted as of yet.

Many names were being tossed for the role including the likes of Jim Carrey, Steve Buscemi, Timothy Olyphant, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Chris Pine and Robert Downey Jr. Although we all know a whole heap of them won’t be taking the role.

Already cast in the film are Liam Neeson as Col. John ‘Hannibal’ Smith, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson as Sgt. Bosco ‘B.A.’ Baracus and Bradley Cooper as Lt. Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck.

‘The A-Team’ revolves around the four members of a former commando outfit and current group of mercenaries. Their leader is Col. John “Hannibal” Smith, whose plans tend to be unorthodox but effective. Lt. Templeton “The Faceman” (usually referred to simply as “Face”) Peck is a smooth-talking con-man who serves as the team’s appropriator of vehicles and other useful items. The team’s pilot is Capt. H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock, who has been declared insane and resides in a mental institution for the show’s first four seasons. Finally, there is the team’s strong man and mechanic, Sgt. B.A. “Bad Attitude” Baracus.

Set for release next year, the film, which is being directed by Joe Carnahan has already begun shooting in Vancouver, Canada.

Director Carnahan and Tony and Ridley Scott say they will use the original premise of the series as the template for an action film. In the original, four Vietnam vets convicted of armed robbery escape from military prison and became do-gooder mercenaries.

The Middle East will replace Vietnam as the place the four did their tour of duty, but Carnahan said the origin story is the jumping-off point.

The original series, which ran from 1983-87 and starred George Peppard, Mr. T, Dirk Benedict and Dwight Schultz, followed an unofficial team of Vietnam vets who will stop at nothing to get the bad guys. Sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn’t commit, these four commandos escaped from a maximum-security stockade and now survive in the Los Angeles underground as soldiers of fortune.

Having just watched District 9 last night I can totally see Copley playing Murdoch. In D-9 he goes from office nerd to fugitive to bad ass and I thought he was brilliant. The whole film was superb so go and see it if you haven’t.

Who do you think would make a good Murdoch?

Yellow Submarine to set sail again

Posted by LiveFor on August 20, 2009

Yellow_SubmarineDisney and director Robert Zemeckis are negotiating to remake Yellow Submarine, the 1968 psychedelic animated film based on the music of The Beatles. That’s what Variety are saying. At this point I am going Why oh Why?

The studio has been quietly brokering a complicated rights deal that would give Zemeckis access to 16 original Beatles songs for a movie he will direct in the performance-capture 3-D digital production format he employed for “A Christmas Carol.” Disney opens that film November 6, with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge as well as the three ghosts who haunt him in the Charles Dickens tale.

The hope is to have “Yellow Submarine” ready to premiere around the 2012 Summer Olympics, which begins July 27 in London.

Disney would not comment on the negotiations or the project. Zemeckis’s ImageMovers would produce.

The deal marries cutting-edge 3-D feature technology with a surging reinterest in The Beatles, who appeared only in the film’s closing scene. Actors provided the voices for the animated characters of Beatles Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

The storyline of the original took place in Pepperland, an undersea paradise protected by Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. When the band is captured by the music-hating Blue Meanies, a soldier is sent to Liverpool to fetch the Fab Four, who hop in the submarine and save the day.

Key to the deal is Zemeckis’ ability to use a treasure trove of classic Beatles tunes, from the title song to “All Together Now,” “Baby You’re a Rich Man,” “All You Need Is Love,” “When I’m 64,” “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.”

September will be a big month for the band with the release of remastered records and the vidgame “The Beatles: Rock Band.”

I really cannot see the point of this remake. The original was a definite product of its time and I can’t quite see this new one working. What are your thoughts on it?

‘Three Stooges’ cast changes again…

Posted by LiveFor on August 10, 2009

The Boston Globe is reporting that the cast of the upcoming Farrelly brothers comedy has undergone another change. Paul Giamatti will take on the role of Larry after Sean Penn dropped out earlier this year. Jim Carrey, who was set to play Curley, has also dropped out. Benicio Del Toro is still on board as Moe, but all these changes beg the question – will this movie ever get made?

Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster – Mmm, Nice Beaver.

Posted by LiveFor on July 10, 2009

Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster are getting back together 15 years after Maverick for the $18 million comedy The Beaver reports Variety.

Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. Kind of like Lars and the Real Girl. Steve Carell and Jim Carrey had both been interested in the role.

Foster will both direct the film and play the role of the man’s wife. The actress brought the project to Gibson herself.

Kyle Killen penned the script which made last year’s coveted Blacklist. Steve Golin and Keith Redmon will produce.

Shooting begins this September in New York City.

Gibson’s going back to acting after directing, drinking and saying dodgy things. Foster is going back to directing after a bit of acting and sauciness in A Very Long Engagement.

Should be quite interesting to see how Gibson is received after his divorce and poor choice of words.
