Captain America – Toby Jones to play Arnim Zola

Posted by LiveFor on May 7, 2010

It was recently confirmed that Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings, The Wolf Man) was to play the Red Skull opposite Chris Evans’ Captain America. Today news is out that Toby Jones (The Mist, Infamous) is to play the evil Nazi scientist, Arnim Zola. Joe Johnston’s film is shaping up to have a great cast of actors.

Arnim Zola was a biochemist during World War II who became one of the first human genetic engineers in history after finding papers and equipment used by the offshoot race of humanity, the Deviants. He found a ready home among the Nazi party, who saw his actions as the ability to ensure the existence of a master race.

One of his first accomplishments was the creation of a brain pattern imprinting device, which would allow someone’s mental essence to be projected into a cloned brain. Zola presented such a gift to Adolf Hitler, creating the Hate-Monger.

Born with a frail, dwarfish body, Zola used his scientific skills to genetically fashion a new stronger body for himself. Having done so, Zola used the mind-transferrance technique he devised to project his mind into the cloned brain of his new body, a brain that he situated in the chest cavity where it would be more protected. Since the brains of all of his genetic creations were grown from cells of his own, he can mentally project his intelligence into any of his creations.

As you can see from the figure by Bruce Ross above, he looks sort of like Krang from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon from the 80s. I don’t think he will have that look in the Captain America film (well at least not at first) and will probably be a normal human mad scientist until some kind of accident or maniacal scheme. To be honest I think it is great that they have Zola involved as it may well give the necessary reason for the Red Skull to survive into the present day. However, it does mean that we may well see Toby Jones crop up in other Marvel Studios films and I could see him in The Avengers having created some kind of crazy looking army of genetic freaks.

Captain America – Hayley Atwell playing Cap’s Missus

Posted by LiveFor on April 14, 2010

Hayley Atwell

I think it is good that they went with Atwell as opposed to a known face.

Marvel Studios announced today that Hayley Atwell has been cast to star as Peggy Carter in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans. In the early comics, Peggy Carter fell in love with Captain America while they fought together in the war effort. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Atwell will next be seen in PILLARS OF THE EARTH, the 8-part miniseries premiering July 23 on Starz and the TV series THE PRISONER. Her film credits include THE DUCHESS, BRIDESHEAD REVISITED and CASSANDRA’S DREAM.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Captain America – Chris Evans didn’t even have to audition

Posted by LiveFor on April 13, 2010

There was lots of kerfuffle about the casting of Captain America before they settled on Chris Evans (The Fantastic Four, Push, The Losers), but it looks as if director Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer, The Wolf Man) wanted him from the start.

“Chris didn’t audition at all.”
said Johnston talking to Earths Mightiest. “I was already familiar with everything he’d done and was championing his cause, not that I had a fight from the Marvel team. They were fans of his as well. He came in to the art department to say hi, saw all the jaw-dropping art and designs on the wall and reacted the way I’d hoped he would. It was really his wonderful enthusiasm for everything he saw that cinched the deal. We have some of the best designers and illustrators in the industry working for us and the art is just incredible to wander through. He will bring the perfect balance of dramatic performance and physicality to the role.

I’d love to see some of that concept art. The other question is whether Evans will be playing Steve Rogers both before and after he gets the super soldier serum. That means going from a skinny runt to a buffed up hero.

“Casting Captain America is really casting two roles…Steve Rogers before and after the transformation from 98 pound weakling to perfect physical specimen. I can’t divulge how we’re going to do it, but the performance will be Chris Evans from beginning to end. An actor playing Captain America has to embody that backstory and let it inform his understanding of his new self. One of the interesting aspects of the character is the effect that kind of total transformation would have on the his psyche. It gives the character more dimension and the actor playing him a wider range of interesting choices.”

Thor – Hopkins and Hemsworth are fine and Iron Man 2 ties into Captain America

Posted by LiveFor on April 2, 2010

Recently some rumours surfaced in the New York Daily Times saying all was not well on the set of Marvel Studios Thor movie. Kenneth Branagh directs, Chris Hemsworth is Thor and Anthony Hopkins is Thor’s Father, Odin.

Rumour had it that Hopkins wasn’t a fan of Hemsworth and stress levels were rising. Hopkins recently spoke to the LA Times to address the tale – “I am having the time of my life making Thor with Ken and Chris. They have made every day immensely fun and collaborative, and we’re all puzzled that someone would fabricate a story suggesting otherwise. I’m proud to say that Thor has been one of the great experiences of my career.”

All well and good. The article goes on and has some interesting news confirming that all the Marvel Studios will tie in leading to The Avengers team up.

Director Jon Favreau recently wrapped up Iron Man 2. Kevin Feige (Marvel producer) said the plan to meld the Marvel Universe on the big screen will move forward dramatically now and he said there are some surprises in Iron Man 2 that set up an unexpected bond to the Captain America movie that director Joe Johnston is doing early work on now in England.

There has already been some groundwork laid for Captain America. Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk had the super-soldier serum that was used to make Cap, but went whacko on Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) and created the Abomination. Cap is also seen frozen in ice during a deleted scene in the Hulk movie.

Then in Iron Man you can see Captain Americ’s round shield on Tony Stark’s workbench.

“Now many of the pieces are in place … with ‘Iron Man 2’ finished and ‘Thor’ more than halfway done, that lattice work is being built.” said Feige

Kenneth Branagh also spoke about making Thor and how it will be split between Asgard and Earth. “Inspired by the comic book world both pictorially and compositionally at once, we’ve tried to find a way to make a virtue and a celebration of the distinction between the worlds that exist in the film but absolutely make them live in the same world,” Branagh said. “It’s about finding the framing style, the color palette, finding the texture and the amount of camera movement that helps celebrate and express the differences and the distinctions in those worlds. If it succeeds, it will mark this film as different…. The combination of the primitive and the sophisticated, the ancient and the modern, I think that potentially is the exciting fusion, the exciting tension in the film.”

“It’s going very, very well,” Branagh said Wednesday. “We’re in New Meixco now where we have a contemporary Earth part of our story. I guess we’re two-thirds of the way through the story and at this stage of the game what’s surprising and delighting me is the way the cast, the ensemble, has fused together. It’s kind of an interesting combination of very young and very experienced people and the double-up of that, it seems to me, is there is a lot of fire in the movie. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, it doesn’t try to be too solemn.”

Captain America gets his Bucky

Posted by LiveFor on April 2, 2010

Chris Evans got the role of Steve Rogers, but one of the other actors who was rumoured to be up for that role has got the part of Cap’s sidekick Bucky Barnes.

That man is Sebastian Stan according to Heat Vision. He has starred in Gossip Girl, Hot Tub Time Machine and has a role in Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan.

Barnes, a teenaged orphan, was too young to join the army but became one camp’s mascot. When he discovered Captain America’s identity, he joined Captain America as a partner in his Nazi-fighting escapades. The character died in Captain America’s final World War II adventure.

For a long time comic book characters who were to stay dead were often referred to as being Bucky Dead. However, like all things that changed and Bucky returned in 2005 as the Winter Soldier – he had been turned into an assassin with a bionic arm.

No word on whether that storyline will show up but Stan has been signed up for 5 or 6 films.

Shooting on the Joe Johnston-directed pic starts this summer in Europe.

Captain America – Channing Tatum may be a lock and female lead may soon be cast

Posted by LiveFor on March 16, 2010

After the news that Ryan Phillippe was auditioning for Captain America another name surfaces and it was one that was mentioned way back when the film was first mentioned. Yep, Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, Fighting, Dear John) has supposedly been approached by Marvel to play Steve Rogers.

Deadline have the news and they say “I would be surprised if he went in to test for the role., now that he’s become a bankable commodity. It’ll come down to Marvel making an offer, and Tatum either accepting it or rejecting it.”

I have to disagree with their comment as I am sure he would still have to audition for the role along with Phillippe, Chris Evans and the rest. His last two films (Dear John and G.I. Joe) may have made money, but many will agree that he still has yet to truly show his acting chops. As well as being buff Captain America has to ooze charisma. He is also a master strategist and Tatum just doesn’t sit well with me.

The trouble is, with The Wolfman being a flop I am just not sure how much that will have effected director Joe Johnston’s rights to make decisions.

Deadline also have the news that Keira Knightly and Emily Blunt are in the running to play the female lead of Peggy – Blunt missed out on playing the Black Widow in Iron Man 2 due to commitments on Gulliver’s Travels.

Could Captain America be the film were Marvel Studios loses its current run of coolness? Is Tatum the one to play Cap or is it just wrong wrong wrong?

Come on already, make a decision please Marvel Studios.

Captain America – Hugo Weaving could be the Red Skull

Posted by LiveFor on March 12, 2010

Marvel Studios are after Megatron, Agent Smith, V, Elrond, Hugo Weaving to play the big bad Red Skull in the Captain America movie according to THR. There is still no word on who will play Cap.

Joe Johnston is directing the movie. He also directed The Wolfman which Weaving also starred in.

In the comics there have been a few Red Skulls, but the main one is the Nazi, Johann Schmidt. This is how Wiki describe him:

Schmidt worked as a menial laborer and in his late teens, during the rise of the Third Reich, Schmidt got his most prosperous job; a bellhop in a major hotel, while there he served the rooms of Adolf Hitler himself. By chance, Schmidt was present when the Führer was furiously scolding an officer, during which Hitler pledged that he could create a better National Socialist out of the bellhop. Looking closely at the youth and sensing his dark inner nature, Hitler decided to take up the challenge and recruited Schmidt.

Dissatisfied with the standard drill instruction his subordinates used to train Schmidt, Hitler took over personally, and trained Schmidt as his right-hand man. Upon completion, Hitler gave Schmidt a unique uniform with a grotesque red skull mask, and he emerged as the Red Skull for the first time. His role was the embodiment of Nazi intimidation, while Hitler could remain the popular leader of Germany. To that end, The Red Skull was appointed head of Nazi terrorist activities with an additional large role in external espionage and sabotage. He succeeded, wreaking havoc throughout Europe in the early stages of World War II. The propaganda effect was so great that the United States government decided to counter it by creating their own equivalent using the one recipient of the lost Project Rebirth, Steve Rogers, as Captain America.

The Red Skull and Captain America continued to engage in a series of skirmishes throughout the war, ending with a final battle that left the Skull buried under the rubble of a bombed building. Because he was immediately exposed to an experimental gas there, he remained in suspended animation for decades

I have no problem with Weaving playing the Red Skull. I think he would be an excellent choice. The fact he spent all of V for Vendetta in a mask means there is no problem with the makeup side of things.

Fingers crossed Marvel Studios get him.

How do you feel about Weaving playing the Red Skull.

Captain America – Will one of these wield the shield?

Posted by LiveFor on February 24, 2010

There is still no official word on who will play Captain America in Joe Johnston’s Marvel movie, but Deadline are saying that these are the people on Marvel’s wish list for the role:

Chace Crawford (Gossip Girl)
John Krasinski (The Office)
Scott Porter (Friday Night Light)
Mike Vogel (Cloverfield)
Michael Cassidy (Privileged)
Patrick Flueger (Brothers, The 4400)
Garrett Hedlund (Tron Legacy)

There’s a salary scale, but if you’re not a known quantity like Crawford or Krasinski, the offer is around $300,000 for the first film – not much for a big film such as this but whoever gets the role will have to sign for another nine options for future films that include sequels, The Avengers and other Marvel films. Deadline also mention that director Johnston recently reached an impasse with Marvel and briefly walked off the film when Marvel informed him the budget was too high and he’d have to take a pay cut. That dispute was sorted out.

Of course it doesn’t mean that any of these will get the part.

However, Comic Book Movie are saying they have a source saying Krasinski has the role. Not sure how reliant that source is though.

Which of them should be Captain America?
