UPDATED: From Paris with Love – What the director of Taken did next

Posted by LiveFor on June 24, 2009

Taken was an excellent film. One of my recent favourites. Liam Neeson was brilliant and it was non-stop action all the way. Pierre Morel was the man at the wheel and his next film sounds like it could have some excellent action scenes. Plus the poster is a great design and actually puts me in mind of the first volume of The Umbrella Academy comic by Gerard Way.

From Paris with Love stars John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Travolta plays a crazy American spy looking to stop a terrorist attack in Paris, while Rhys Meyers plays a young employee in the office of the US Ambassador who meets up with him.

The only problem I have is with the cast. Travolta can be good, but he’s been coasting and shouting an awful lot in recent movies. If he can bring his Pulp Fiction cool then he’ll be okay. JRM is a different matter. I personally don’t really rate him, but I think that could be more to do with some dreadful aftershave adverts he has been in lately.

We shall have to wait and see.

UPDATE: Thanks to Tsukpo for sending me the link to the trailer. What do you think of it?

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 – Tony Scott and Denzel talk about the remake

Posted by LiveFor on June 11, 2009

In The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, a New York City subway dispatcher draws on his extensive knowledge of the subway system in order to outsmart a dangerous criminal mastermind who’s hijacked a subway train in this remake of the 1974 thriller inspired by John Godey’s best-selling book. Walter Garber (Denzel Washington) was drifting through his daily routine when he received word that a heavily armed gang of four had hijacked a subway train and were now holding all of the passengers hostage. Led by the cunning master thief Ryder (John Travolta), the gunmen will begin executing everyone aboard should the authorities fail in delivering a sizable ransom in the space of just one hour. With the tension in the tunnels rising, Walter races to save the hostages before the shootings start. But through it all, there’s one part of Ryder’s plan that Walter can’t quite comprehend: Even if the thieves do succeed in getting their money, how could they possibly get out of the tunnels undetected?

MovieWeb had this interview with the films director, Tony Scott and Denzel Washington.

Cruise and Travolta could possibly be Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid

Posted by LiveFor on April 6, 2009

Tom Cruise is reportedly planning a remake of the 1969 Western Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid.

The actor was apparently given Paul Newman’s blessing for the project ahead of his death from cancer last year.

According to The Daily Express, John Travolta, 55, has been lined up to reprise Newman’s Cassidy in the remake, which will be produced through Cruise’s United Artists studio.

Cruise, 46, wants to take on the role of Robert Redford’s Sundance, which is said to be one of his favourite cinematic performances.

“Butch and Sundance is a labour of love for Tom,” a source said. “He was eight years old when he saw the original and it made an impression that has stayed with him all his life. He can’t wait to get to work.”

The original film, which follows the exploits of bank robbers Cassidy and Sundance, was directed by George Roy Hill and is said to be based loosely on fact. It won four Oscars at the 1970 Academy Awards, including those for best screenplay and cinematography.

I really cannot see this at all. The original was a true classic. Cruise and Travolta are no Redford and Newman. I think this could well be a remake too far.
