Pirates of the Caribbean 4 gets a Blackbeard

Posted by LiveFor on February 22, 2010

Ian McShane is in negotiations to play the villain in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the Disney movie series being directed by Rob Marshall according to THR.

McShane will play legendary pirate Edward Teach aka Blackbeard.

He joins Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz in a tale that revolves around the Fountain of Youth as does the Tim Powers novel the film is based on. The sequel is due out on 20th May 2011.

McShane has previously starred in Deadwood, Coraline, Death Race and Lovejoy amongst others. Personally I think he will make a stupendous Blackbeard. What do you think?

Confirmation that things are moving full steam ahead on Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides – The Black Pearl sailed to Kalaeloa Harbor, Hawaii on early Sunday morning, 15th February.

The last piece of news about the film was that Penelope Cruz was possibly going to be joining Johnny Depp in the search of the Fountain of Youth – as based on the Tim Powers novel that they seem to be using for the plot.

Hawaii News Now have a report on the ship arriving and there is some video below. Thanks to Pamela Fuendt for sending the link.

The film, directed by Rob Marshall, is due out on 20th May 2011.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4 – Penelope Cruz could be setting sail with Capt. Jack

Posted by LiveFor on February 10, 2010

The Black Pearl is getting ready for sea again. Penelope Cruz is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth installment of the movie series being directed by Rob Marshall.

Depp is back as Captain Jack Sparrow in the search for the Fountain of Youth. As you may or may not know the story is based on the excellent book On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers.

Acording to Heat Vision, Cruz’s character details are being kept secret, though she is to be Sparrow’s foil and equal in many ways.

For Cruz, the role reunites her with Marshall, who directed her in Nine (Check out the LFF review of Nine).

While I am not Cruz’s biggest fan I could see her fitting in quite well with Johnny Depp and the whole Pirates setting.

Filming begins in Hawaii this summer. Disney plans for a 20th May 2011 release.

Alice in Wonderland – Super Bowl TV spot

Posted by LiveFor on February 9, 2010

At first I wasn’t that fussed about Tim Burton’s take on Alice in Wonderland, mainly because I wasn’t a fan of the original tale. However, the more I see of it the more I like it.

Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska seem particularly good and it all looks lovely.

Thanks to Live for Films researcher and reviewer Pamela Fruendt for pointing out this spot.

Alice in Wonderland – What’s real and what isn’t

Posted by LiveFor on February 6, 2010

Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland could be a lot more than you think it is. LFF’s Pamela Fruendt pointed out a great article over on Rotten Tomatoes that explains what is CGI and what isn’t. Plus they had the great photos of the Caterpillar (voiced by Alan Rickman) and Crispin Glover.

“We basically have three live-action characters,” explains David Schaub. “They are Alice (Mia Wasikowska), The Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) and The White Queen (Anne Hathaway). The Tweedles and the Knave of Hearts are real heads blended onto animated bodies. That creates a special look that you won’t have seen before. It’s very cool. Meanwhile, Helena Bonham Carter’s character (The Red Queen) is an amalgamation of all kinds of different techniques, which we then distorted.” One of the most difficult characters to create, though, was The Cheshire Cat. “That was hard because he actually floats,” says Schaub. “So we had to think, if a cat could float, how would a cat float? Then he’s got this huge grin the whole time, which causes problems because he’s got to have emotions. But how do you make him anything other than happy when he’s got this permanent smile? It was intense.”

As for Wonderland itself, it’s almost entirely CGI. “There is one significant prop where Alice steps into Wonderland and goes down some stairs,” says Schaub. “That was an amazing piece of architecture. But everything else is a CG environment.”

“It’s funny,” laughs costume designer Colleen Atwood, who has worked with Tim Burton on seven films over the past 20 years, including Edward Scissorhands, Big Fish and Sweeney Todd. “Tim, Johnny and I had all made sketches of what we thought the Mad Hatter should look like. Then, when we sat down to discuss it, we realised they were all really similar!” One of the most interesting things about the Mad Hatter’s costume is that it changes colour according to his mood. “It’s like a mood ring,” explains Atwood. “I made his suits in different colours, with layers of other colours, and then they enhanced it with CGI. It’s going to look really fun.”

Johnny Depp to direct Keith Richards Documentary

Posted by LiveFor on February 3, 2010

Johnny Depp and The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Keith Richards have a bit in common. Depp based Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean on Richards and then Richards played Captain Jack’s Dad in the last part of the trilogy.

Now, according to The Playlist, they will have something else to chat about as Depp is apparently a documentary on his Keith Richards.

Depp’s last time behind the camera was back in 1997 for the Marlon Brando film, The Brave. It only played at the Cannes and Toronto Film Festivals and wasn’t distributed as it wasn’t meant to be very good. It sounds as if Depp agrees with this.

“Now that I’m wiser, and that enough time has passed, I can experience directing again,” said Depp. “Already next week I’ll start working on a Keith Richards documentary. While I’m in Drvengrad, my editor is already working on kilometers of archive footage and footage of his concerts. I’m very touched that Keith agreed to show up in front of my cameras.”

The fact it is a documentary this time may also help him get his directing mojo together.

I’ve never seen The Brave (it is for sale over on Amazon UK) so can’t say how bad it is. However, I am a big fan of Depp (check out the time I managed to speak to him at the Public Enemies press conference) and look forward to seeing how he gets on with Keith Richards and what his experiences working with the likes of Tim Burton, Terry Gilliam and Michael Mann bring to the mix.

Do you think Depp will be a good documentary maker?
