Iron Man 2 – Screenwriter Justin Theroux talks about The Mandarin and after the credit wonders

Posted by LiveFor on April 26, 2010

You may well recognise Justin Theroux’s face from Mulholland Drive and Charlie’s Angels 2. He is also a cool screenwriter who wrote Iron man 2. With the film due out in the UK on Friday and the USA next week he has been chatting to MovieWeb about the story.

They asked him whether Iron Man’s arch-nemesis, The Mandarin, would show up in the sequel (he was hinted at in the first with the whole 10 Ring terrorist group).

“Yeah, we tip our hat to that but that’s a tough one to get in because it’s such a big storyline,” explained Theroux. “So that, I don’t know, and I don’t dare say it but it might feature in Iron Man 3, I don’t know?”

As he is also an actor are there any roles Theroux would live to play in the Marvel universe?

“I don’t know? Hawkeye would be great,” answered Theroux. “No, I don’t know? Yeah that would be fun. We’ll have to see because I’ve never even thought of that? We’ll see?”

Collider also spoke to him and got onto the subject of what we may see after the credits (we got to see Nick Fury at the end of the first one) and whether something like that could be improvised as many of the scenes in the film were.

“No, that’s got to be very specific because you can’t…if it was all of a sudden Tony opens a tool box and there’s a friggin’ hammer in there, you can’t bone the next guy. You know it’s not like…you want to create possibilities. So that’s a very thought out piece. If the shield all of a sudden just falls out of the sky, whatever it is, whatever that thing is, you want to be very specific about it.

Only a few more days to wait until we get to see. What would you like to see after the credits?

James Franco in Your Highness and Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours

Posted by LiveFor on January 7, 2010

James Franco is a very busy man. Not only is he starring in the US soap General Hospital he has been working away on the medieval comedy, Your Highness, with Danny McBride, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel. It is directed by David Gordon Green and you can see a photo of them above.

Throughout history, tales of chivalry have burnished the legends of brave, handsome knights who rescue fair damsels, slay dragons and conquer evil. But behind many a hero is a good-for-nothing younger brother trying just to stay out of the way of those dragons, evil and trouble in general. Danny McBride and James Franco team up for an epic comedy adventure set in a fantastical world–Your Highness. As two princes on a daring mission to save their land, they must rescue the heir apparent’s fiancée before their kingdom is destroyed.

Thadeous (McBride) has spent his life watching his perfect older brother Fabious (Franco) embark upon valiant journeys and win the hearts of his people. Tired of being passed over for adventure, adoration and the throne, he’s settled for a life of wizard’s weed, hard booze and easy maidens. But when Fabious’ bride-to-be, Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel), gets kidnapped by the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux), the king gives his deadbeat son an ultimatum: Man up and help rescue her or get cut off.

Half-assedly embarking upon his first quest, Thadeous joins Fabious to trek across the perilous outlands and free the princess. Joined by Isabel (Natalie Portman)–an elusive warrior with a dangerous agenda of her own–the brothers must vanquish horrific creatures and traitorous knights before they can reach Belladonna. If Thadeous can find his inner hero, he can help his brother prevent the destruction of his land. Stay a slacker, and not only does he die a coward, he gets front row seats to the dawn of an all-new Dark Age.

Then in March, Franco will begin work on Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours. This is the true story of Aron Ralston, the mountain climber who amputated his own arm to free himself after being trapped by a boulder for nearly five days.

Simon Beaufoy write the script that apparantly has no dialogue for the first hour of the story.

Which one of the two would you rather watch?

Iron Man + Samurai Jack = Kick ass coolness

Posted by LiveFor on October 29, 2008

This morning, AintItCoolNews.com posted the first part of a two-part, extensive interview with the writer/director/producer, Jon Favreau, where he discussed the current status of “Iron Man 2″. He also mentioned that “Samurai Jack” creator Genndy Tartakovsky will be joining the production and working with Favreau, collaborating on fight sequences in sequel.

“I’ve always liked ‘Samurai Jack’ and I loved his ‘Clone Wars’ vignettes that he did,” Favreau is quoted in the AICN.com interview. “Now clearly his stuff is a bit broad for a live-action film but I love his rhythm and his attention to detail. It has a real comic booky feel but yet it feels cinematic and not gimmicky and even his cartoons feel… there’s an elegance to them. So in this process as we’re storyboarding and designing sequences he and his team have come in and I’m working with them and they’re working on collaborating with us on the project and that’s a new wrinkle and it allows me… I feel like I’m really learning a lot from collaborating with this guy.”

Favreau also gave a status update on the production, saying, “[Screenwriter] Justin [Theroux]’s almost done with the first draft of the script. And we’re boarding and been creating animatics for the action sequences. We’re starting to do some location scouting and designing some sets and figuring out how much of it we want to… you know, what techniques we’re going to use.”

What do you think of Genndy getting involved with the next Iron Man movie? What are your thoughts on Samurai Jack?

The Random

Posted by LiveFor on July 16, 2008

– Diablo Cody (love that name), scriptwriter of Juno, is apparantly writing a screenplay for a new DreamWorks project. This will be based on an original idea by Spielberg. Variety have more on this. How about that for news which doesn’t really tell you much of anything!!

– Hollywood Reporter are saying that Justin Theroux, who wrote Tropic Thunder, is in negotiations to write Iron Man 2.

– Apparantly Tarantino wants Brad Pitt to play the character of Aldo Raine (the bloke who puts the squad together) in Inglorious Bastards and Leonardo DiCaprio to play the boss Nazi, Hans Landa. Variety have the story.

Monster Squad to be remade. Sounds good, but then you find out Rob Cohen (who made The Skulls, xXx, Stealth) is producing it. The original was a brilliant movie with all the classic monsters trying to take over the World. Plus it was Stan Winston on the effects back then.
