Kevin Conroy Disses Christian Bale’s Batman Voice

Posted by LiveFor on April 18, 2010

As you will know if you are a regular reader I really like Kevin Conroy. He is the true voice of Batman in The Animated Series and most recently the Arkham Asylum video game.

Christian Bale’s Batman voice in The Dark Knight has been slagged off many times. Personally, it didn’t bother me and would make sense for him to change his voice as much as he could to protect his identity (hmm maybe he should use that defective collar Alpha had in up).

At C2E2, Kevin Conroy spoke about Christian Bale’s infamous Batman voice. He thinks somebody should have told Bale just how bad it was.

What did you think of Bale’s voice in The Dark Knight?

Batman talks about Bale’s Batman voice

Posted by LiveFor on September 1, 2009

batmanKevin Conroy is the voice of Batman for many people. If you enjoy Batman: The Animated Series then you know what I am talking about. He is cool as Bruce Wayne (I still think Billy Zane should have been a live action Batman), but as Bats he excels with the self assured, menacing voice. The clip below shows what I am talking about.

As you may well know, Conroy recently got back in the cowl to voice Batman in Batman: Arkham Asylum – an excellent video game that I am currently playing. The plot is written by Paul Dini and Mark Hamill is also back to voice the Joker, so it is very much the gang’s all here for the game.

Conroy recently spoke to Wired about the game and he had some interesing words on Hamill and Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker, but even better he had something to say about Christian Bale’s Batman growl in The Dark Knight.

“Mark is incredible as always,” Conroy said. “There’s no one I’d rather have voicing The Joker.”

“I think Mark created the definitive ‘crazy’ Joker. There’s no question Heath Ledger gave an unbelievable performance in The Dark Knight as a scheming, anarchist Joker. But Mark perfected that fun, insane character.”

“Reuniting the cast and so many people from the animated series made Arkham Asylum such a great experience,” Conroy added. “After working with (the animated series crew) for so many years, you develop a shorthand that allows everything to work really smoothly.”

What did he think of Bale’s voice in The Dark Knight.

“I thought Christian was excellent as Bruce Wayne, but I didn’t understand his choices there. I thought it was over the top and distracted from his scenes as Batman. I’m not sure what they were going for there. But, what do I know?”

When Christian Bale was asked what he thought about Kevin Conroy’s comments he had this to say:
Not really, that’s just the work of Frank Miller and Jim Lee in All Star Batman and Robin.

Good news for Batman fans as Kevin Conroy is also voicing him in the forthcoming Superman / Batman: Public Enemies DVD that is out on 29th September.

POLL: Who played the best Batman?

Posted by LiveFor on August 23, 2009

batman_arkham_asylum_screenThe new Batman: Arkham Asylum video game is out and so far reviews are saying it plays as good as it looks. Kevin Conroy voices Batman and Mark Hamill is back as the Joker. That got me thinking – what actor has done the best job at playing the Bat?

Batman: The Brave and the Bold – Diedrich Bader is Batman. Do you remember The Searcher?

Posted by LiveFor on November 24, 2008

Just been reading a bit about the new DC animated series, Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Basically a weekly team-up with Batman and another DC hero. Sounds pretty good and I do like me a bit of animated comic goodness. Here is the trailer for the animated show. It seems to be going for a more kid friendly comic book kind of vibe as opposed to the Christian Bale gravelly voiced Batman. I mean Batman and Plastic Man in the picture are going up against intelligent apes (which is always cool in my book) and Kamandi and the new Blue Beetle are down to star in the series of stand alone adventures.

This is the opening credits and theme song.

What struck me though was the fact Diedrich Bader is voicing the Dark Knight this time around and not Kevin Conroy (Batman: The Animated Series). If you don’t know the name you will more than likely know Bader’s voice as he has done a load of character acting for various animated things (Surf’s Up, Ice Age, Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, Gargoyles, and Batman Beyond to name but a few). For his live action stuff he is probably best known as Oswald in The Drew Carey Show. However, I first remember seeing him as The Searcher in Danger Theatre many moons ago (actually it was 1994). The Searcher was a great spoof on the action series such as Knight Rider and the other lone renegade helping the innocent against the bad guys. Below is the opening credits for The Searcher.

Here is one of his adventures as introduced by Robert Vaughn.

At first I was a bit sorry to hear that Kevin Conroy wouldn’t be doing the voice of Batman in the new series. However, looking into it a bit more I think Bader’s voice will be well suited for the Silver Age-esque Batman they seem to be going for in the show. How do you feel about Bader voicing Batman? Will you be watching The Brave and The Bold? More importantly does anyone else remember The Searcher?
