X-Men: First Class gets Matthew Vaughn

Posted by LiveFor on May 5, 2010

I hadn’t reported on this earlier as there had been lots of conflicting news about it. However, Fox has closed a deal with Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake) to direct X-Men: First Class and has set a release date of 3rd June 3 2011.

According to Heat Vision, Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for First Class and was to initially direct the movie before choosing to focus on Jack the Giant Killer for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg. Apparently he has also been doing some stealth casting for the film while casting for Jack the Giant Killer.

According to Fox, the film will “chart the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were the closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.”

Now I love the X-Men comic, well the one from a few years ago. Been tricky to keep up with it and I initially enjoyed the X-Men movies. The third was the poorest, but recent rewatches of them all have shown that they haven’t really aged that well. Not sure what it is, but I think the stories used a really slight. I would have loved for Fox to lose the rights to the characters so they would revert to Marvel Studios and the X-Men could be thrown into the mix of Iron Man, Thor etc. That’s just me and looks like it won’t be happening anytime soon.

I wonder if Vaugn will bring along his buddies Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher for the film? Maybe Mark Strong could play Xavier, although he’d be great as Magneto.

Instead we have the X-Men early days. What characters do you want to see in the film and who should play them? Should they have Wolverine in it?

Green Lantern – Mark Strong talks Sinestro

Posted by LiveFor on April 7, 2010

Mark Strong just keeps going from strength to strength. Yep he is mainly playing the bad guys in films such as Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, John Carter of Mars and future Green Lantern films. However, for the moment his character of Sinestro in the latter film will be one of the good guys, as set up in the comic. Here is what he had to say to USA Weekend.

“For anybody who’s familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan’s mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who’s made into a Green Lantern. He’s certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern,” Strong says. “He is a military guy but isn’t immediately bad. It’s the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he’s quite a heroic figure.”
Will they keep Sinestro’s pencil moustache?

“That widow’s peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn,” says Strong, who recently got fitted for special Sinestro contact lenses. “In the ’30s and ’40s, they shared an apartment together in Hollywood when they were making movies and they were great friends. Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books.”

The fact he mentions David Niven is just fantastic. Who doesn’t like Niven – A Matter of Life and Death is one of my faves.

Really looking forward to see what Strong does with the role.

The Random – Soderbergh’s Contagion, Things Fall Apart, Red Riding Hood, Scream 4, Green Lantern, Hit Somebody

Posted by LiveFor on February 22, 2010

Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow are all already attached to star and now Laurence Fishburne is in talks to join Steven Soderbergh’s viral outbreak film, Contagion, according to The Playlist.

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is set to star in and produce Things Fall Apart for Cheetah Vision Films says Dark Horizons. The story follows a football running back in his final year of college who suffers a personal tragedy that makes him question his own mortality.

Amanda Seyfried (Chloe, Mamma Mia, Dear John) is the favourite to play the titular character in Catherine Hardwicke’s contempory gothic Girl With the Red Riding Hood says The Los Angeles Times. The studio hopes it will be a success along the lines of Twilight.

Wes Craven has finished My Soul To Take and has confirmed he will be directing Scream 4.

Comic book writer Geoff Johns confirmed Mark Strong is Sinestro in the Green Lantern film over on Twitter“Back from an amazing trip to Green Lantern town a.k.a. New Orleans!! Ryan IS Hal. And Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro. “

Seann William Scott (American Pie, Cop Out, Southland Tales) is tipped to play the lead role in Kevin Smith’s new comedy Hit Somebody reports NHL.com. He would play Buddy, a rough hockey enforcer prone to fighting who tries to improve his playing skills so that he can score just one goal. Smith seems to really rate him in the interview.

Green Lantern – Concept Art for Sinestro and The Guardians

Posted by LiveFor on January 29, 2010

A few days ago there was some concept art from the Green Lantern movie – it showed Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar Re.

Now Latino Review have dug up some art for Sinestro (the Green Lantern who helps train Ryan Reynold’s Hal Jordan. He’ll possibly be played by Mark Strong) and on of the Guardians of the Universe (they’re the blue guys who built the Lanterns and power rings).

Again, the art work looks cool and they seem to have the right idea (although something seems a bit off about the look of Sinestro) but there is no actual confirmation that any of it is official concept art for the movie. Only time will tell…or someone from the studio!

Green Lantern – Concept art – Look it’s Abin Sur, Tomar Re and Kilowog, you lousy Poozer!

Posted by LiveFor on January 27, 2010

That is the current situation for the Martin Campbell directed adaption of the DC comic. Sinestro probably won’t be the main bad guy (like the comics he’ll start out as a Lantern) and Legion could well be one of the bad guys along with Hammond, but what about the other members of the Green Lantern Corp? Well it looks as if Cosmic Book News scored the first look at some concept art for Abin Sur (the Green Lantern who’s death leads to Hal Jordan getting the power ring), Tomar Re and my favourite, Green Lantern trainer, Kilowog.

The DC Database gives a quick background to Kilowog for those not up to speed on who he is (mind you due to the convoluted DC continuity it may mean nothing to you if you’ve never read the comics):

Bolovax Vik was one of the most crowded planets in the universe; it had 16 billion residents with a communal mind. Kilowog was a geneticicist and one of Bolovax’s most brilliant minds. After the previous Lantern, Branwill, died, Kilowog was chosen to be a member of the Green Lantern Corps. It was a great honor, but it meant leaving Bolovax and going into space on missions; this was tantamount to exile for a Bolovaxian. Nevertheless, Kilowog carried out his duties with pride. He would go on to be one of the Corps’ best recruiters and trainers.

During the Crisis on Infinite Earths, Bolovax Vik was destroyed. His ring automatically protected Kilowog, but not his people. Acting quickly, he placed all 16 billion life energies into his ring. By sheer force of his will they survived until Kilowog found a suitable planet to release his people. Sadly, the planet was soon destroyed by Sinestro. Kilowog could not rescue them again. He was now alone for good

Cosmic Book News also have the story from the 2008 Green Lantern script. It makes interesting reading but as we don’t yet know whether this will be the exact script they are using there could well be major spoilers involved.

The concept art for all three looks a lot like the comic book characters which is a good thing.

Concept art is always great to see but the final look depends upon who will be working on the effects. Variety have the news that Karen Goulekas (The Day After Tomorrow) Kent Houston (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus) and Jim Berney (I Am Legend) will be in charge of making the effects look real. Sony Pictures Imageworks will also be the lead visual effects studio on the film. They worked on Watchmen and Superman Returns. All of those films had their flaws, but in the main they had excellent special effects so Green Lantern should look splendid.

Green Lantern is due out on 17th June 2011.

The question is who will voice Kilowog, Abin Sur and Tomar Re?

Green Lantern – Mark Strong not Jackie Earle Haley could be Sinestro

Posted by LiveFor on January 16, 2010

Looks like HitFlix were wrong. “Sherlock Holmes” actor Mark Strong is in talks to play Sinestro in the “Green Lantern” movie, according to director Martin Campbell.

Speaking with MTV News during the junket for “Edge of Darkness,” his upcoming action thriller opening January 29, Campbell dismissed rumors that “Watchmen” actor Jackie Earle Haley was in talks for the role.

“No, that’s completely wrong,” said Campbell of the persistent rumor, which popped up again recently despite Haley denying any involvement with the “Green Lantern” movie. “In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro.”

“He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro,” he added. “If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life.”

If negotiations pan out, Strong will have a role in not one but two much-anticipated comic book movies, as he also plays mobster Frank D’Amico in Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar’s “Kick-Ass.” However, Campbell didn’t stop there — he also offered up a list of characters from Green Lantern’s universe making an appearance in the film.

“Well, Kilowog will be,” said Campbell. “Tomar-Re is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it’s a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right.”

If Strong becomes Sinestro, he could join recently announced in-negotiations actor Peter Sarsgaard, who’s in talks to play villain Hector Hammond.

In the comic books, Sinestro is a former Green Lantern who trains Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds), only to become one of Jordan’s greatest enemies when he leaves the cosmic police force.

This is splendid news. I really hope Strong takes the role as he would be brilliant as Sinestro.

John Carter of Mars – Malcolm in the Middle’s Dad joins Pixar’s first live action movie

Posted by LiveFor on January 14, 2010

Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle, Breaking Bad) has joined the cast of Walt Disney’s “John Carter of Mars.” He will play a Civil War colonel who comes into conflict with Carter.

Andrew Stanton is directing the production, which goes before cameras next week in Utah.

The film also stars Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, True Blood), Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton (In America, Control), Dominic West (300, Chicago), Polly Walker (Patriot Games), Thomas Haden Church (Spider-Man 3, Sideways, George of the Jungle), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, RockNRolla, Kick-Ass), and James Purefoy (Ironclad, Solomon Kane).

The adaptation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs book series centers on Civil War veteran John Carter (Kitsch), who is mysteriously transported to Mars, where he discovers a lush, wildly diverse planet whose main inhabitants are 12-foot tall green barbarians. Finding himself a prisoner of these creatures, he escapes, only to encounter Dejah Thoris (Collins), Princess of Helium, who is in desperate need of a savior and Tars Tarkas (Dafoe), a brutal and mirthless green Martian warrior, who possesses the unusual characteristic to feel love and empathy.

Church plays Tal Hajus – “an ambitious and vicious Thark warrior who is biding his time to be a ruler.” Strong plays Matai Shang, a godlike leader of the Holy Therns – “that ancient cult which for countless ages has been credited with holding the secret of life and death in their impregnable fastnesses upon the hither slopes of the Mountains of Otz.”

Purefoy will be Kantos Kan, the captain of a Helium warship. Morton will play Sola, the daughter of Tars Tarkas, who must hide her softer side from her warmongering race. West plays Sab Than, prince of the Zodangans who believes he is entitled to rule Mars. Walker plays Sarkoja, a merciless, tyrannical Thark.”

Stanton wrote the screenplay with Mark Andrews. Jim Morris, who produced “WALL-E,” and Colin Wilson are producing “Carter.”

As Cranston is playing a Civil War colonel I don’t imagine him being in the film that much. Presumably near the beginning before Carter gets to Mars.

The movie will be a hybrid of live action and CGI and should be out in 2012.

This may be Pixar’s first foray into the world of live action, but as all of their films have had the story and characters come first I reckon we will be in for something amazing. Plus they have got one hell of a cast for the trilogy.
