The Killer Inside Me – Trailer for Winterbottom’s controversial adaption of the book

Posted by LiveFor on May 6, 2010

This adaption has been controversial due to the violence against women it portrays. Not sure why people have been surprised though as the book does deal with a bloke who is batshit nuts!

I’ve covered it quite a bit and it stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas

Based on the novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, Michael Winterbottom’s THE KILLER INSIDE ME tells the story of handsome, charming, unassuming small town sheriff’s deputy Lou Ford.

Lou has a bunch of problems. Woman problems. Law enforcement problems. An ever-growing pile of murder victims in his West Texas jurisdiction. And the fact he’s a sadist, a psychopath, a killer. Suspicion begins to fall on Lou, and it’s only a matter of time before he runs out of alibis.

But in Thompson’s savage, bleak, blacker than noir universe nothing is ever what it seems, and it turns out that the investigators pursuing him might have a secret of their own.

The Random – Robert Pattinson & Sean Penn, Promised Land, The Graveyard Book, Martin Scorsese to direct Hugo Cabret, Burke and Hare

Posted by LiveFor on January 22, 2010

– Sean Penn and Robert Pattinson are considering joining Water for Elephants at Fox 2000 reports Variety. Based on the best-selling historical novel by Sara Gruen, the story centers on a 90-year-old man (Pattinson) reminiscing about his life and is set during the Depression. At the time the man found work at a B-level circus taking care of the animals. He sees the brutality of circus life while falling for the wife of an abusive animal trainer (Penn). Reese Witherspoon is already attached to play the wife.

– Michael Winterbottom (“Nine Songs”) is next set to direct the $5 million indie Promised Land for Revolution Studios reports Variety. The story deals with the events that lead up to the 1948 partition of Palestine and the subsequent creation of the state of Israel. Jim Sturgess (“Across the Universe,” “21”) will star as a British officer hunting down the extremist Jewish factions.

– Neil Gaiman says the film adaptation of his The Graveyard Book is still on the cards. Speaking to The Los Angeles Times Gaiman said “It was all put together over at Miramax Films. The people there had a long, great relationship with Neil Jordan and it was all set up and ready to go, and then Miramax was more or less erased from existence. It became a filing cabinet in somebody’s desk, more or less… But it looks like almost all the pieces are on the table again. They have a studio, they have a distributor and they are putting stuff together and I’m not allowed to say anything else.”

– Martin Scorsese is in talks to direct a live-action adaptation of Brian Selznick’s children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret reports Variety. The 2008 novel centers on an orphaned boy who secretly lives in the walls of a busy Paris train station and looks after the clocks. He gets caught up in a mystery adventure when he attempts to repair a mechanical man.

– Isla Fisher (“Wedding Crashers,” “Confessions of a Shopaholic”) and Tom Wilkinson (“Michael Clayton,” “Duplicity”) have joined the horror comedy Burke and Hare says Heat Vision Blog.
The film is based on the true story a pair of the U.K.’s earliest serial killers, William Burke (Simon Pegg) and William Hare (Andy Serkis), gravediggers who lucratively sold the corpses of their victims to a medical college for dissection. Fisher will play Pegg’s girlfriend, an actress looking for a patron who might or might not be an accomplice to the murders. Wilkinson will play Dr. Robert Knox, an anatomy lecturer looking for fresh corpses. John Landis directs.

– John and Drew Dowdle (“Quarantine”) are set to direct an adaptation of Jack Kilborn’s gory novel Afraid reports Production Weekly. Larry Malkin and Chad Thumann will adapt the script about five government-sponsored lethal torturers wrongly sent on a mission to a small, sleepy Wisconsin town. The military sends in a bunch of Green Berets, Special Forces, SEALs and marines to take down this killing force. However it’s the townsfolk who band together to save their home that will make the critical difference.

The Killer Inside Me – Trailer for the Jim Thompson adaption starring Casey Affleck and Jessica Alba

Posted by LiveFor on November 5, 2009

tkim-2I’ve been covering this one for quite a while. I posted some photos a few weeks ago and now there is a sales trailer for Michael Winterbottom’s film.

It stars Casey Affleck, Jessica Alba, Kate Hudson, Ned Beatty, Bill Pullman and Elias Koteas.

Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford is a pillar of the community in his small Texas town, patient and thoughtful. Some people think he’s a little slow and boring but that’s the worst they say about him. But then nobody knows about what Lou calls his ’sickness’. It nearly got him put away when he was younger, but his adopted brother took the rap for that. Now the sickness that has been lying dormant for a while is about to surface again – and the consequences are brutal and devastating.

The trailer is about 5 minutes long and shows quite a bit of what the story involves. If you should watch it let me know what your impressions of it were. I kind of liked it. Casey Affleck seems pretty solid in the lead.

Not sure whether Casey Affleck is the right choice for this one. He is a great actor, but the look of him doesn’t fit the character I have in my mind, but I suppose that is the point isn’t it.

Colin Firth Competition – Win Genova DVD

Posted by LiveFor on September 6, 2009

genova-Stills_228_1024_72_largeColin Firth loves a good costume drama. From Pride and Prejudice to the new take on Dorian Gray (check out the trailer for that here) the Firthster is there with the frilly shirt and the smouldering look.

However, he has been known to star in films set in the modern day and Michael Winterbottom’s Genova is one of them.

The good people of Way to Blue have provided me with 4 copies of the DVD – Certificate 15, Region 2, PAL. Open to anyone in the World. To be in with a chance to win one all you have to do is send me the answer to the following question:

Name four Colin Firth films that are not costume dramas

So any films set in the modern day apart from Genova and no sequels allowed!

Email me the answer with the subject “GENOVA COMP” and include your name and address – Closing date is Sunday 13th September. The four winners will be chosen at random. My decision is final.

Good luck.
genova

A haunting, eerie journey to a place where souls stir and hearts go to mend themselves, Genova is the dark, brooding voyage of discovery for one family, torn apart by tragedy.

With its sun drenched vistas and shadow-cloaked alleyways, and Italian town of Genova provides a fresh start for Joe and his two young daughters. Seeking new lives after the sudden death of their mother they’re all looking for something. As Joe throws himself into study and possible new relationships, the teenage Kelly loses herself in the underbelly of this mysterious new world.

But it’s youngest daughter Mary who is affected by this mystifying and alluring paradise. And then she sees the ghost of her mother wandering the streets…

With echoes of Nicholas Roeg’s seminal Don’t Look Now, this acclaimed, stunning new film from the multi-award winning Michael Winterbottom (A Mighty Heart) stars Colin Firth (Mama Mia), Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich), Hope Davis (Synecdoche, New York), Willa Holland (The O.C.) and Perla Haney-Jardine (Kill Bill Vol. 2)

The Killer Inside Me – Photos from the shoot

Posted by LiveFor on September 1, 2009

killer1Here are the first photos from the set of Michael Winterbottom’s adaption of Jim Thompson’s The Killer Inside Me.

The last time I reported on this they had just secured funding for the film after they lost key financial support. Now it looks as if things are going strong.

Casey Affleck plays Ford; Kate Hudson plays the schoolteacher that wants him to marry her, and Jessica Alba is the prostitute that Ford keeps on a leash instead of running out of town.

Still not sure if this is going to work or not.killer3

The Killer Inside Me is saved

Posted by LiveFor on April 6, 2009

The Killer Inside Me, the latest collaboration between director Michael Winterbottom and producer Andrew Eaton, has been saved after securing new funding. The $13m project was close to collapse after it lost key financial support.

The film had to secure new funding by 3rd April or it faced losing actors Casey Affleck, Kate Hudson and Jessica Alba. It lost its funding from Barbarian Film and Ocean Media at the end of last year.

Producer Eaton confirmed the production is close to signing a deal with Canada-based private investor Hero Entertainment, which will provide about 20% of the budget. The rest of the finance is from pre-sales deals, which have been handled by Wild Bunch internationally, and Endeavor in the US. It was widely sold at AFM.

Eaton described the deal as a “relief” and added he had been through “one of the longest prep periods I have ever had”. He said that he was hopeful that shooting could begin the next six to eight weeks. Chris Hanely, Robert Weinbach and Bradford Schlei are also producing the film.

The film had been due to start shooting in Oklahoma at the end of January.

The project is an adaption of Jim Thompson’s novel. The synopsis of which is as follows:

Deputy Sheriff Lou Ford is a pillar of the community in his small Texas town, patient and thoughtful. Some people think he’s a little slow and boring but that’s the worst they say about him. But then nobody knows about what Lou calls his ‘sickness’. It nearly got him put away when he was younger, but his adopted brother took the rap for that. Now the sickness that has been lying dormant for a while is about to surface again – and the consequences are brutal and devastating.

Jim Thompson was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma. After an itinerant childhood during which his sheriff father was driven from office for embezzlement; and as a roughneck in the Texan oil fields of the 1920s, Thompson became successful as a writer with the pulp fiction houses of the 1950s, writing a dozen of his more enduring novels in just 19 months. He also wrote two screenplays (for the Stanley Kubrick films The Killing and Paths of Glory).

Stanley Kubrick described the book as “Probably the most chilling and believable first-person story of a criminally warped mind I have ever encountered.”

Joe believes that he needs a new start for his 16-year-old daughter Kelly (Willa Holland) and her younger sister Mary (Perla Haney-Jardine) after the death of their mother (Hope Davis) in a car crash. With the help of family friend Barbara (Catherine Keener), they start to settle in. Mary takes up piano lessons while Kelly hangs out with her new boyfriend. But Mary is racked with guilt about the car accident and is suffering from terrible nightmares.
