Preacher – Sam Mendes is off, but Jesse Custer is still searching for God

Posted by LiveFor on April 9, 2010

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon made comic book gold when they made Preacher. The film has been in development hell and Sam Mendes had been attached to direct, but he is now off the project as he will be making the new Bond film. I still think that Preacher would work best as a TV show so they could take their time, but from the sound of it they will at least turn it into a trilogy.

Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a down-and-out preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer was accidentally possessed by the supernatural creature named Genesis in an incident which killed his entire congregation and flattened his church.

Genesis, the product of the unauthorized, unnatural coupling of an angel and a demon, is an infant with no sense of individual will. However, as it is composed of both pure goodness and pure evil, it might have enough power to rival that of God himself. In other words, Jesse Custer, bonded to Genesis, may have become the most powerful being in the whole of living existence.

Custer, driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, goes on a journey across the United States attempting to (literally) find God, who abandoned Heaven the moment Genesis was born. He also begins to discover the truth about his new powers, which allow him to command the obedience of those who hear his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O’Hare, as well as a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.

During the course of their journeys, the three encounter enemies and obstacles both sacred and profane, including: the Saint of Killers, an invincible, quick-drawing, perfect-aiming, come-lately Angel of Death answering only to “He who sits on the throne”; a serial-killer called the ‘Reaver-Cleaver’; The Grail, a secret organization controlling the governments of the world and protecting the bloodline of Jesus; Herr Starr, ostensible Allfather of the Grail, a megalomaniac with a penchant for prostitutes, who wishes to use Custer for his own ends; several fallen angels; and Jesse’s own redneck ‘family’ — particularly his nasty Cajun grandmother, her mighty bodyguard Jody, and the ‘animal-loving’ T.C.

Collider spoke to Producer Neil Moritz, who gave some info on the current state of the film that may start filming next year.

“We were originally talking with Sam Mendes about doing the movie. Sam Mendes is going to go off and do the Bond movie, so there’s another director that we’re talking to right now.”

“We’ve got a great script. John August wrote a script that I think is terrific. The hardest thing was with all the books-the Preacher books-was how to distill it down. And what he made the smart decision instead of trying to cram everything into one, there’s plenty of room for 2 or 3 movies. So that’s what he’s done and he’s done a really faithful adaption but made it probably more accessible to a broader audience right now. That movie’s definitely R-rated and it’s an amazing central character.”

They then ask Moritz if August could possibly direct the film.

“You know it’s interesting you say that. I had a meeting with him recently and we started talking about directors and we were talking about some really, you know, lofty directors. And he said you know if you don’t get one of those I’d be interested in it. I said we’ll talk about it. “

Good to know things are moving ahead. Now the important questions. Who should play Jesse, Cassidy, Tulip, Herr Starr and the Saint of Killers?

Bond 23 – Rachel Weisz could be head of Quantum

Posted by LiveFor on March 29, 2010

Mark this one as a rumour, but CinemaBlend are saying it is from a very reliable source. Rachel Weisz (The Fountain, The Mummy) may be the head of the organisation known as Quantum that has been causing Daniel Craig’s James Bond a bit of bother in the two previous films.

We’ve heard that Rachel Weisz could be involved in Bond 23. In the past she’s joked about becoming a Bond girl, and though she’s certainly beautiful, casting an actress of her caliber as yet another Bond nookie babe seems like kind of a waste. But Weisz is actually friends with Daniel Craig (in fact they’re working together on the upcoming movie Dream House) and in the past she had a personal relationship with would-be Bond 23 director Sam Mendes. All Bond girl kidding aside, she has before expressed real interest in doing a Bond movie with Craig. So why not give her something substantive in the movie, something that won’t reduce her to being 007’s latest conquest? Why not let her play the villain?

Would be nice to have Weisz as the big bad and a bit different, but this could all turn out to be like tears in the rain. How would you feel about it if it turns out to be true? What should they call the next Bond movie?

Sam Mendes to direct James Bond 23

Posted by LiveFor on January 5, 2010

Looks like Sam Mendes (American Beauty) is in negotiations to direct the 23rd installment of the venerable James Bond franchise according to THR.

Production is being fast-tracked and could begin as early as June with an eye toward a 2011 release. Plans for the film are moving forward despite a possible sale of MGM. Sony co-produced and distributed the most recent installment of the 007 series with MGM.

Bond regulars Neal Purvis and Robert Wade are writing, along with “Frost/Nixon” scribe Peter Morgan. Michael Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producing. Daniel Craig will reprise his role as 007.

The film will be Mendes’ first action-heavy project, although his 2005 effort “Jarhead” was set amid U.S. war in Kuwait. Mendes’ last directorial effort, the road-trip dramedy “Away We Go,” grossed $10 million domestically last summer.

Could be good, could be bad. Still don’t have a proper grasp on what Mendes can do. I kind of enjoy his films, but they just don’t grab me. He is also attached to the Preacher adaption.

Is Mendes the right choice for Daniel Craig’s third mission as Bond? What do you want to see in the next Bond film?

Preacher – Could John Cusack be Jesse Custer?

Posted by LiveFor on November 6, 2009

preacher-cassidy1In a recent interview with io9 John Cusack got chatting about a film based on a comic that he wanted to be involved with.

“It’s a vampire and a killer, and they’re on the road, and it’s this really strange story,” said Cusack.

Now Preacher by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon features Jesse Custer (who would be the priest) and Cassidy (an Irish Vampire) along with Tulip, Arse-Face, John Wayne (Bruce Campbell should play him in the film), Herr Starr and too many other twisted characters to mention.

If you’ve read the comics you will know how good they are. However, I never really picture Cusack as either JC or Cassidy.

Asked whether it Preacher he was thinking of, Cusack said, “I think it might have been ‘Preacher,'” and added that he was “trying to” get involved with the long-in-development project.

The actor, who’s appearing in theaters next weekend in the disaster flick “2012,” said he’s most interested one of the two leads, “either the vampire or the priest.”

“One of those two guys,” he said.

Last I heard about the Preacher film was that Sam Mendes was down to direct it but they were waiting for a workable script – like many others I wish it would be a series on HBO to get the full story.

Mind you maybe he is thinking of Priest which also involves priests and vampires, but that’s already started filming with Paul Bettany in the lead.

Do you think John Cusack was talking about Preacher? Would he be good in either of the roles? If not him then who would?

Now if they could get Clint Eastwood involved as the Saint of Killers.

Preacher – First draft is written says Sam Mendes

Posted by LiveFor on May 11, 2009

Chatting with MTV News this weekend about his upcoming film Away We Go, director Sam Mendes mentioned a few details about the status of his much-anticipated, big-screen version of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic book series, Preacher. He did say that screenwriter John August is moving along with his first draft.

“He’s doing pretty well,” Mendes told MTV News, “He’s about halfway through. There’s a long way to go yet, but I’m very, very hopeful. I think it could be amazing.”

The only other fact that Mendes is sure of at this point is that, while he can envision the film as a franchise, he’s going to give his all to make the first film great and self-contained.

“You have to try and get one really good and then, if you’re lucky, you can make a second or a third,” said Mendes. “You can create something that’s going to run. But I think that there’s certainly more than enough for one good movie and plenty left over.”

Though casting is still a long way off, Mendes seemed excited at the prospect of bringing the characters to life, saying the series has some “real good roles in there”.

I am a big, big Preacher fan (I’ve got all the original issues) and would love to see this on the big screen. The fact it could be spin out into more than one film is great news as it is a huge story and it would be foolish to chuck it all into one. Mind you a TV series would have been better for the story, but that was shelved a while back.

Now what do you want to see in the first Preacher film? Who should play Jesse, Tulip, Cassidy, The Saint of Killers, Herr Starr and Arseface? Do you think Mendes is the right choice to direct it?

Revolutionary Road – Will the Titanic double act strike gold again? Billy Zane’s not in it

Posted by LiveFor on September 23, 2008

Directed by Mr Kate Winslet, Sam Mendes, this is getting early Oscar buzz around the Web.

April (Kate Winslet) and Frank Wheeler (Leonardo Dicaprio) are a young, thriving couple living with their two children in a Connecticut suburb in the mid-1950s. Their self-assured exterior masks a creeping frustration at their inability to feel fulfilled in their relationships or careers. Frank is mired in a well-paying but boring office job, and April is a housewife still mourning the demise of her hoped-for acting career. Determined to identify themselves as superior to the mediocre sprawl of suburbanites who surround them, they decide to move to France where they will be better able to develop their true artistic sensibilities, free of the consumerist demands of capitalist America. As their relationship deteriorates into an endless cycle of squabbling, jealousy and recriminations, their trip and their dreams of self-fulfillment are thrown into jeopardy.

What do you think of it? Could it be an Oscar winner?
