All You Need Is Kill – Groundhog Day meets Starship Troopers

Posted by LiveFor on April 6, 2010

The heading of this post is all you need to know and that knowing equals awesome. What a great sounding concept and an excellent title.

For those who would like to know more, Deadline have the news that Warner Bros paid low-seven figures against for a Dante Harper-scripted adaptation of the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka. It also has an aggressive progress to production clause that will likely get the film before the cameras within 12 months. What that basically means is they didn’t need to pitch the film, but there was no guarantee that it would be made into a film.

The plot of the book goes like this:

There’s one thing worse than dying. It’s coming back to do it again and again . . . When the alien Gitai invade, Keiji Kiriya is just one of many raw recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor and sent out to kill. Keiji dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On the 158th iteration though, he sees something different, something out of place: the female soldier known as the Bitch of War. Is the Bitch the key to Keiji’s escape, or to his final death?

As well as Groundhog Day it also sounds similar to the Duncan Jones film Source Code which is being filmed with Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier reliving a train bombing over and over to discover the culprit.

I do like the sound of All You Need Is Kill though. Lots of action and as the repetitive days go on the hero becomes a better soldier – basically like the game systems in Dead Rising where everytime you play through you keep what you’ve already earned – and he finds other people in a similar situation to him.

I just hope that it doesn’t turn out that they are all characters in a video game. We’ll have to wait and see.

Anyone read the book? Is it any good? Will it make a good film?

Paul Verhoeven has The Surrogate

Posted by LiveFor on May 29, 2009

The Dutch director, Paul Verhoeven (Black Book, Total Recall, Robocop, Hollow Man, Starship Troopers) has signed on to develop and direct The Surrogate, a thriller for 20th Century Fox.

It is based on the 2004 book by Kathryn Mackel, the story centers on a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane.

The description from the book is “Kyle and Bethany Dolan reel from years of infertility, miscarriages, and finally, a disastrous hysterectomy. They are desperate to find the perfect surrogate mother to carry their last frozen embryo. Sable Lynde, a computer genius with a dark history, is desperate to escape her own inner demons, her dark past, and a dangerous loan shark. Sable assumes the identity of a surrogacy candidate so perfect that the Dolans welcome her into their family without reservation. As the pregnancy progresses, the dangers of Sable’s deception escalate until the unthinkable happens–Sable’s dark demons spill out into the Dolans’ lives–even as she lies in a coma. A thrill-ride of suspense and terror, this novel leads readers to a breathtaking climax.”

The question is will this be good Verhoeven or Showgirls Verhoeven directing it?
