Sleeping Beauty – Emily Browning to play a sleeping sex toy

Posted by LiveFor on February 10, 2010

Everyone loves Sleeping Beauty. The classic tale of a beautiful princess cursed to sleep for a 100 years or more until the kiss of her true love wakes her. This Sleeping Beauty is nothing like that.

The Playlist have the news. Written and directed by Julia Leigh it is “a haunting erotic fairy tale about a student who drifts into prostitution and finds her niche as a woman who sleeps, drugged, in a ‘Sleeping Beauty chamber’ while men do to her what she can‘t remember the next morning.” She basically becomes a living, breathing sex doll.

Definitely not the fairy tale or Disney version. Mind you original fairy tales are dark and twisted tales. I also wonder whether Disney may have something to say about the name. I don’t think they have rights to the name as it is an old story, but stranger things have happened and in the murky movie world.

Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre) was originally attached to play the Beauty, but she has dropped out and has been replaced by Emily Browning (Lemony Snicket, The Uninvited) who also stepped in for Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch when Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!, Chloe, Dear John) had to drop out.

It begins filming in Australia next month with a $10 million budget. I wonder what male actors will be joining the cast?

Gravel – Warren Ellis’ combat magician heading to the big screen

Posted by LiveFor on October 9, 2009

gravel_1_wrapLegendary Pictures is developing a feature adaptation of the Warren Ellis comic book Gravel according to Heat Vision. Plus Ellis himself is meant to be writing the screenplay according to Bleeding Cool.

Avatar Press publishes the ongoing series, which blends espionage and dark fantasy in tracking the modern-day exploits of British “combat magician” William Gravel. Ellis (Planetary, Transmetropolitan, and so much more) first introduced the character in a 1999 limited series of graphic novels entitled “Strange Kiss.”

Ellis, who is repped by the Cheng Caplan Co. and Nelson Davis Wetzstein LLP, also has “Red” in development at Summit, “Ocean” in development at Warner Bros. and “Global Frequency” in development at Warner Bros. TV. That news about Global Frequency is a bit of a surprise as I know there was a pilot a few years ago, but as far as I was aware it had been killed stone dead. Does this mean they are giving it a go or has someone somewhere got there facts a bit muddled?

It all sounds very promising as Legendary also has “Warcraft,” with Sam Raimi, in development, and it is in production on “Inception,” “Clash of the Titans,” “Sucker Punch” and “Jonah Hex.” It will next have “Where the Wild Things Are” in theaters later this month. They have a great, or potentially great, set of films due out so fingers crossed we get to see some Ellis magic on the big screen.

Oh and other cool news you may have missed – Planetary #27 (the final issue as far as I am aware) went on sale a couple of days ago.

Scott Glenn is in Sucker Punch

Posted by LiveFor on September 18, 2009

scott_glenn.jpg-4128Scott Glenn, a favourite actor of mine since his storming turn as astronaut Alan Shepherd in The Right Stuff, has signed on for Zack Snyder’s upcoming action drama, Sucker Punch!, which co-stars Jon Hamm, Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Jamie Chung, Oscar Isaac and Carla Gugino.

According to Variety, the film is set in the 1950s, and revolves around Baby Doll, a girl who creates an alternate reality to escape the every-day world after her stepfather commits her to a mental hospital with plans to have her lobotomized. Glenn will play a mentor and guide to Baby Doll and the other girls in the asylum.

No production date has been set.

Still very intrigued about this film. Can’t wait to see some actual concept art or footage from it.

Posted by LiveFor on August 4, 2009

carla-gugino-32Carla Gugino has been cast in Sucker Punch, the action fantasy Zack Snyder is directing for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures according to  THR. This is the film that Snyder described as Alice in Wonderland with Machine Guns

Gugino joins Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Jena Malone, and Abbie Cornish star in the 1950s-set tale of a girl (Browning) confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. She and her friends enter an alternate reality where they begin planning an escape.

Gugino is playing Mrs. Schultz, an adult figure in the institution.

Snyder, who wrote the script, is producing with his Cruel & Unusual Films partner, wife Deborah Snyder.

The actors are currently in fight training, and the studio is readying a fall shoot in Vancouver.

Gugino was one of the stars of Snyder’s “Watchmen,” portraying the 1950s version of Silk Spectre. She next stars in indie sports drama “Our Lady of Victory.”

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch to feature naked Vanessa Hudgens

Posted by LiveFor on July 13, 2009

Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical) had a bit of a scandal a while back when pictures of her not very clothed leaked onto the web. Now it sounds as if she will be doing it for artistic reasons in Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch.

Hudgens, 20, reveals: ‘I’m playing a character named Blondie and it’s set in a brothel in the 1950s, so there’s not a whole lot of clothes.’
It’ll be gun training, stunts, fighting and all that craziness. I can’t wait. I’m so excited. I’ve wanted to do an action film for a while.’
‘I think this is my time to really step it up and get to grow up. It will be somewhat different with the content and a few more foul words but that’s the biggest difference.’

I wonder what Disney have to say about this?

Do you want to see Sucker Punch? Can Hudgens pull off an action film? Does this news, make it appeal more or less?

Sy-Fy is developing another spin-off series based on the 1988 film Alien Nation reports Variety. Sounds like District 9 has kick started the franchise again. The original film was set in 1991, when alien refugees had come to Earth three years before and were now attempting to integrate into Los Angeles. Tim Minear (“Angel,” “The X-Files,” “Firefly”) is penning the update for Fox 21. This new version is set in the Pacific Northwest of the 2020’s, two decades after the first alien ship crashed on Earth.

Universal Pictures has won the film rights to the classic 1979 video game Asteroids says The Hollywood Reporter. The game featured a spaceship that had to shoot down incoming asteroids to avoid collision, that’s about it which means there’s no backstory and a lot of creative freedom for Matthew Lopez who is adapting the script.

ShockTillYouDrop is reporting that a new live-action Resident Evil sequel called Resident Evil: Afterlife is in development for a September 2010 release. They’ve actually gotten confirmation from Sony that it is indeed happening. And that Paul W.S. Anderson is at least writing the script and that Capcom is on-board.

The Random – Sucker Punch, The Surrogate, Swift, Caught in the Crossfire, The Runaways, Your Highness,

Posted by LiveFor on June 2, 2009

– When asked about Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch, which stars Vanessa Hudgens as a supporting character named Blondie, Zac Efron admitted he wants in, too. “I think it’s an all-girl movie,” he told E! Online.

– Halle Berry is in talks to star in the thriller The Surrogate for 20th Century Fox says The Hollywood Reporter. Based on the 2004 book by Kathryn Mackel, the story centers on a couple desperate to have a child who find themselves in an unbearable position when they find out the surrogate they hired to carry their baby is insane. Berry would play the wife who wants to have the child and the studio is apparently keen to have her involved but no formal arrangements or meetings have yet been made.

– Sony Pictures has picked up Swift, a script described as a reimagining of the Tom Swift adventure novels says Variety. This new version would feature Swift as one-half of a father-son team who are among the greatest inventors of all time. The character first appeared in a series of books that launched in 1910. Barry Sonnenfeld will direct.

– Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson has joined the cast of the police corruption drama Caught in the Crossfire says Variety. The drama concerns two homicide detectives who find themselves caught in the crossfire of a gang-related homicide and a group of dirty cops. Jackson plays a gang-banger who becomes a reluctant informant. Chris Klein, Adam Rodriguez and Richard T. Jones also star.

– Michael Shannon (“Revolutionary Road,” “Bug”) is in negotiations for a lead male role in The Runaways for River Road says The Hollywood Reporter. Kristen Stewart will play Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning is on board to play bandmate Cherie Curry in the bioic of the short-lived but highly influential all-female 1970’s rock band.

Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch loses a couple more actors but gets Chung and Malone

Posted by LiveFor on April 21, 2009

Jamie Chung (Dragonball Evolution) and Jena Malone (Donnie Darko, Into the Wild, The Ruins) are set to topline Sucker Punch, Zack Snyder’s all-female action fantasy for Warner Bros.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chung and Malone join Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Abbie Cornish in the film, which Snyder is directing and producing with his Cruel & Unusual Films partner, wife Deborah Snyder.

Set in the 1950s, Sucker Punch centers on a girl confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternate reality to hide from the pain and in that world begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out.

Several actors have been in talks and negotiations to star in the movie, including Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia), Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone, but have fallen away because of scheduling conflicts (surely their schedules were known when they first said they could do it?)

Chung, replacing Stone, plays Amber, a country girl with a big heart. Malone, taking Wood’s part, plays Cornish’s younger sister. Both characters are inmates.

All seems a bit strange having people who had been confirmed to take part dropping out like this. One I could understand, but now three of the original line-up have changed. I wonder if it is anything to do with Watchmen’s underperformance at the box office? I wouldn’t be surprised if Vanessa Hudgens is the next to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.

I’m still looking forward to this film though as I have enjoyed Snyder’s comic book adaptions and it will be interesting to see him do something a bit more original.
