Leonardo DiCaprio to be Vicky the Viking for Mel Gibson

Posted by LiveFor on December 14, 2009

Okay, it’s not a remake of the old animated kids TV show, but it does involve Vikings.

Mel Gibson will direct and Leonardo DiCaprio will star in an untitled period drama about Viking culture. William Monahan is writing the script according to Variety.

Graham King will produce with Gibson and Tim HeadingtonShooting is expected to begin in fall 2010, meaning that if everything falls into place, it would be the next directing effort for Gibson.

The principals confirmed the project but would not divulge many details. DiCaprio, who has long been fascinated by Viking culture, will play one in a storyline that will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts, “Braveheart,” “The Passion of the Christ” and “Apocalypto.”

King teamed with DiCaprio and Monahan in the Oscar-winning drama “The Departed” and just worked with Gibson and Monahan in the Martin Campbell-directed drama “Edge of Darkness.”

The Viking film will be DiCaprio’s first picture with Gibson.

“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent, and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill,” said King.

Vikings are always cool, however recent films such as Outlander and Pathfinder don’t really show that. Gibson’s Apocalypto shows that he can do the period thing well with a dash of fighting and gore for good measure.

Early days on this one but it does have my interest.

Posted by LiveFor on August 4, 2009

valhalla_rising_3

Mute slave One Eye escapes his Scottish masters with the help of 10 year old Are, torturing and killing them before joining a band of dispossessed Vikings. They go to sea, determined to return to Scandinavia to fight the spread of Christianity, but for One Eye the journey is also a personal one to discover his own origins. Caught in a terrible storm, the group drift for 40 days until, on the verge of death, they find themselves in a freshwater river. The land seems at once strange yet familiar.

When they come under attack by unseen assailants, the groups’ quest for their homeland takes on a bitter urgency as one-by-one they succumb to the onslaught, dying at the hands of the invisibles. Worse, they are no clearer about where they are or if this place even exists outside their imagination. Have they finally reached the new world, or Valhalla?

Meanwhile, One Eye’s search for identity is compromised when Are is captured. As the enemy reveal themselves, One Eye realises he has finally found his identity but at too high a price. As Are’s life is threatened, One Eye is faced with an impossible choice; save the boy or save his soul?

Starring Mads Mikkelson (Casino Royale)

Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn

Valhalla Rising -Trailer for Nicolas Refn’s Viking epic

Posted by LiveFor on April 10, 2009

Nicolas Refn is the director of Bronson and Pusher. This new one of his looks nice and vikingy! It stars Casino Royale’s Mads Mikkelsen (what is it with him and characters with dodgy eyes?)

For years, One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, has been held prisoner by the chieftain Barde. Aided by a boy, Are, he kills his captor and together they escape, beginning a journey into the heart of darkness. On their flight from bounty hunters, One-Eye and Are board a Viking vessel, but the ship is soon engulfed by an endless fog that first disintegrates as they sight an unknown land. As the new land reveals its secrets and the Vikings meet a ghastly fate, One-Eye discovers his true self.

Outlander – New poster which tells you nothing about the film except Jesus is in it

Posted by LiveFor on January 14, 2009

As an age old battle rages amongst the stars, Kainan’s ship burns brightly as it crashes into the Nordic coast. As his space craft comes to rest in the fjords of ancient Norway, it’s with dismay that Kainan realizes that he wasn’t the only survivor. A second passenger, a Moorwen also emerges from the wreckage. A Fierce and animal-like creature, the Moorwen is intent on causing harm to those it perceives have wronged it. As the Moorwen kills everything in its path, Kainan must work together with the Vikings to destroy the beast before it destroys them all. Starring James Caviezel, Sophia Myles, Jack Huston, John Hurt, and Ron Perlman.

I’ve been looking forward to this film since I first heard about it ages ago and the synopsis above sounds cool. Kind of like Beowulf meets Predator. Vikings and aliens are cool concepts in their own right and when they meet it should be shouted from the rooftops. Therefore, I have to ask the question why is The Weinstein Co once again hiding away one of their films by not really pushing it and releasing it in the nothing movie month of January?

Also if you knew nothing about the film and saw the new poster (above) you would still know nothing about it apart from the fact it could be the second coming of Jesus Christ or just his giant head about to crush Earth. Honestly, where are the vikings? Where is the big alien beastie? Come on poster people, play the game!

Outlander – More Vikings v Aliens in this trailer

Posted by LiveFor on January 13, 2009

Outlander begins when a space craft crashes into the majestic fjords of ancient Norway and into the time of the Vikings. From the wreckage emerge two bitter enemies: a soldier from another world – Kainan – and a bloodthirsty creature known as the Moorwen. Man and monster both seeking revenge for violence committed against them. As the Moorwen ravages the Viking world, killing everything in its path, Kainan forms an unlikely alliance with the primitive but fierce warriors. Combining his advanced technology with ancient Iron Age weapons, the hero leads a desperate attempt to kill the monster – before it destroys them all.
