The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Conference and Festival has announced Austin-based filmmaker Robert Rodriguez and director Nimród Antal will present a “First Look” at their upcoming motion picture Predators, at SXSW on March 12, 2010. SXSW also announced the world premiere of Géla Babluani’s 13, the previously announced Super Secret TBA as part of the SX Fantastic midnight section. The 2010 event will take place March 12 – March 20, 2010.

The special presentation of Predators will take place at the Alamo Ritz Theater in downtown Austin, at 10:15pm. Doors open at 9:45pm, and the special event is only open to SXSW Badge-holders on a first-come, first-served basis. An audience Q&A follows the unveiling. SXSW Badges are still available for purchase at http://www.sxsw.com/attend.

A bold new chapter in the Predator universe, Predators was shot on location under Rodriguez’s creative auspices at the filmmaker’s Austin-based Troublemaker Studios, and is directed by Nimród Antal. The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they’ve been brought together on an alien planet… as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human “predators” that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators. In addition to Adrien Brody, the film stars Topher Grace, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne. Co-starring are Walton Goggins, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov and Mahershalalhashbaz Ali.

Predators was written by Alex Litvak & Mike Finch based upon characters created by Jim Thomas & John Thomas. The producers are Robert Rodriguez and Elizabeth Avellàn. Twentieth Century Fox releases Predators in theaters everywhere July 9, 2010.

Commented Robert Rodriguez: “My director Nimród Antal and I are excited to bring this first look at Predators to Austin’s SXSW Film Festival, an event that’s become vital to the filmmaking scene. Austin is my home and I’m proud that Predators was conceived and filmed here.”

Said Film Conference & Festival Producer Janet Pierson: “Robert Rodriguez and Troublemaker Studios are a continued fountain of filmmaking creativity and innovation here in Austin, TX. We couldn’t be more proud to present the unveiling of Predators at our 2010 event.”

Additionally, SXSW has revealed the identity of the Super Secret TBA in its SX Fantastic section – the anticipated world premiere of Géla Babluani’s 13 will take place at Midnight on Saturday, March 13 at the Alamo South Lamar Theater.

13, a remake of the 2005 French film 13 Tzameti, also directed by Babluani, stars Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Ben Gazzara, and Alexander Skarsgard. The thriller follows the story of Vince, who unwittingly becomes involved in a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors.

2010 marks the second year of the SX Fantastic section, a series of mind-bending international midnight films at SXSW programmed by Tim League, founder of the Austin-based Fantastic Fest. This year features a diverse slate of five action, thriller, sci-fi and just plain fantastic films from all corners of the world. For more information on the SX Fantastic section, as well as the rest of the Festival program, visit www.sxsw.com/film.

Over the course of nine days, the 2010 Festival will host a total of 134 features, including 64 world premieres, and will open with the world premiere of Kick-Ass, directed by Matthew Vaughn and starring Aaron Johnson, Cholë Grace Moretz, Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Nicolas Cage. SXSW will also host more than 80 Film Conference panels, which will take place Friday, March 12 – Tuesday, March 16. For the complete program of films and panels, as well as schedule information, visit http://my.sxsw.com.

Predators – Photos from the shoot. Look at the Predators

Posted by LiveFor on January 16, 2010

Here are some great behind the scenes photos from Nimród Antal directed Predators produced by Robert Rodriguez. You can see Adrien Brody and a whole heap of Predators. Lots more pics here.

The film follows the story of a group of people (soldiers, cops, killers etc) who find themselves stranded on an alien planet and are “hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators.”

The main cast is as follows:
* Royce, a Steve McQueen type – Adrien Brody
* Cuchillo, a Mexican enforcer for a drug cartel who has twin uzis strapped to his back – Danny Trejo
* Nikolai, a bear of a Russian armed with a four-barrel gas-powered rotary machine gun – Oleg Taktarov
* Isabelle, a French woman armed with a sniper rifle – Alice Braga
* Stans, a San Quentin prisoner with a shaved head, a scorpion tatto on his neck and armed with a prison-made knife – Maybe Walter Goggins
* Mombasa, an African member of the Sierra Leone death squad – Mahershalalhashbaz Ali
* Hanzo, a bad ass Japanese Yakuza enforcer
* Edwin, an unassuming man who was formerly on the FBI’s most-wanted list – possibly Topher Grace

So I think we are seeing Mombasa, Nikolai and Royce. Now if we only knew who Laurence Fishburne was playing.

That Evening Sun – Trailer for Hal Holbrook’s new film

Posted by LiveFor on December 3, 2009

That Evening Sun is a 2009 film by Scott Teems based on a 2002 short story I Hate to See That Evening Sun Go Down by William Gay. Halbrook was so good in Into the Wild.

Abner Meecham (Hal Holbrook), an aging Tennessee farmer discarded to a nursing facility by his lawyer son, flees the old folks home and catches a ride back to his country farm to live out his days in peace. Upon his return, he discovers that his son (Walton Goggins) has leased the farm to an old enemy and his family. Not one to suffer fools or go down easy, Abner moves into the old tenant shack on the property and declares that he will not leave until the farm is returned to his possession. But Lonzo Choat, the new tenant, has no intention to move out or give in to the demands of the old man. This sets up a ruthless grudge match between Abner and Choat, each man right in his own eyes, each too stubborn to give an inch. Angered by the betrayal of his son and haunted by recurring dreams of his long-dead wife (Dixie Carter), Abner sets about his own path toward reclaiming his life. Lines are drawn, threats are made, and the simmering tension under the Southern sun erupts, inevitably, into savagery.

Adrien Brody to be the lead in Predators

Posted by LiveFor on October 7, 2009

brodyThis is a bolt from the blue. Instead of going for the muscle bound tough guy it looks as if Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal have gone for an Oscar winning actor. That’s right Adrien Brody (King Kong, Giallo, The Pianist, The Jacket, The Brothers Bloom) is heading back to Skull Island or rather Predator Planet.

The news comes from Heat Vision

Topher Grace (That 70s Show, Spider-Man 3) is in negotiations to join the action-adventure movie, to which Alice Braga (“I Am Legend”), Mahershalalhashbaz Ali (“The 4400”), Walt Goggins (“The Shield”), Rodriguez mainstay Danny Trejo and UFC fighter Oleg Taktarov have also been cast.

Written by Rodriguez, Alex Litvak and Michael Finch, the script follows a group of elite warrior-types who are being hunted by members of a race of merciless alien trackers called Predators.

Brody is a man who ends up inheriting the mantle of leader and is known as a hunter of men. Grace would play an accountant-type whose unassuming facade masks a dangerous serial killer.

Braga is the tough female killer. Ali is a man not afraid to die, Goggins is the loose canon of the group and Taktarov is a former Russian special ops agent.

Trejo, already cast, is Cuchillo, a hardened warrior with twin uzis strapped to his back.

So looking at the list of characters we can now put actors to the names.

There you have it. The Predators are getting people to hint.

Shooting begins next month in Hawaii then moves to moves to Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin. The movie is slated for a July 9, 2010, release.

I think this is all great news. They seem to be getting a mix of great actors and tough guys involved so fingers crossed we should get a worthy Predators movie.

What do you think about Brody playing the lead? Which character do you think will die first?

Predators – More casting news – It is a bloke from The Shield

Posted by LiveFor on October 4, 2009

shield-waltgoggRobert Rodriguez’s Predators directed by Nimród Antal is gaining more and more speed. 20th Century Fox have set a release date for 7th July 7 2010.

Then there was the recent script review and the confirmation that Danny Trejo was playing the character of Cuchillo – a Mexican enforcer for a drug cartel who has twin uzis strapped to his back.

Now ComingSoon.net have the news that one of Rodriguez’s cast will be Walton Goggins, star of the FX series “The Shield.”

They don’t know what character he is playing so let us have a look at the list of known characters:

* Royce, a Steve McQueen type
* Cuchillo, a Mexican enforcer for a drug cartel who has twin uzis strapped to his back
* Nikolai, a bear of a Russian armed with a four-barrel gas-powered rotary machine gun
* Isabelle, a French woman armed with a sniper rifle
* Stans, a San Quentin prisoner with a shaved head, a scorpion tatto on his neck and armed with a prison-made knife
* Mombasa, an African member of the Sierra Leone death squad
* Hanzo, a bad ass Japanese Yakuza enforcer
* Edwin, an unassuming man who was formerly on the FBI’s most-wanted list.

We can rule out Cuchillo, Nikolai, Isabelle, Mombasa and Hanzo. That leaves us with Royce, Stans and Edwin. Looking at Goggins I would say he could be playing the character of Edwin, but I could be wrong. Who do you think he could be playing?
