Robot Jox – Cool art for the 90’s Mech Warrior style movie

Posted by LiveFor on April 13, 2010

I remember watching the 1990 film Robot Jox. I remember the trailer on another video and kept heading back to the video shop to see if they had it. Eventually they did and the massive robot mayhem commenced. Like many films back then it wasn’t as good as it could have been, but it had its moments. Namely the giant robot battlesuits that converted into tanks and spaceships.

The film was by Stuart Gordon and written by sci-fi author Joe Haldeman.

Now artist Robert Simons has done some cool art based on the film that io9 came across. It is truly awesome and I would love to see more films from back in the day get an artistic update like this. Come on someone do Ice Pirates!

Simons did the Robot Jox art for a class in Viscom software. He also says he almost did some concept design work for the Transformers movies — and based on this work, we wish he had. More pics are at these links.

Check out more of his work over on DeviantArt.

Transformers 3 – New Decepticon spotted

Posted by LiveFor on April 2, 2010

Recently there was some news on the cast for Michael Bay’s third Transformers film. It also mentioned a new Autobot in the shape of a Ferrari.

The Realm Toys had news from a studio mole who spotted a new Dodge Charger sporting a certain Decepticon badge. The Mole said:

I was doing my normal rounds on the lot and came across the Transformers 3 work. The main Transformers cars are all there including 2 that I didn’t see in the previous movies. One is a autobot that I couldn’t get close enough to take a picture of because it was being guarded so that it would not be scratched/ damaged. It was a red Ferrari. The other (which wasn’t being guarded as heavily) is a decepticon. It was a dark navy Dodge Charger. I managed to snap a couple of pics with my cell. Sorry for the poor quality.

So far the cast for the new film consists of Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Ken Jeong, James Avery and is due out on 1st July 2011

Gaiking – Shogun Warriors Movie Trailer

Posted by LiveFor on March 29, 2010

Shogun Warriors is apparently a line of action figures I know nothing about. See I am informative even when there are no actual facts involved.

Anyhoo, AICN spoke to Matthew Gratzner (who is doing the adaption of Gerry Anderson’s UFO) about the Gaiking film – is it really pronounce “Gay-King”?

We are building the robots life size. Matt is one of the last great practical effects guys in the business who can pull this off. We will bring you to the set and give you first shot at seeing them. If you want, we can have you put out those first images of what the finished versions look like. The teaser we have now is CG for the robot. It is to give the fans a taste of the design we are going with, but it is not a true reveal given what we are going to be doing when we build the thing. The real deal is going to be mind blowing of course.

This was going to be a short film for the new Heavy Metal film, but they decided to go full on for a power armour movie that could be splendid.

Transformers 3 – Malkovich and Frances McDormand join the cast

Posted by LiveFor on March 23, 2010

Looks as if the third Transformers film will have to up the quality of the script as they’ve got a couple of great actors joining the cast. Plus they’ll have a new Autobot in the shape of a Ferrari.

Here is Michael Bay’s announcement:

Transformers 3 Update From Michael Bay
03/22/2010 06:40 AM
Hey, it’s been a long time since I’ve posted. Just been a little busy.

Transformers 3 has been going very well. We are going to shoot in LA, Chicago, Washington DC, Florida, Texas, Africa, Moscow, and China. On the talent front, we just locked in Frances McDormand and John Malkovich. Both amazing actors I’ve always wanted to work with. We also just got Ken Jeong, he is the super funny actor stuck in the trunk from “Hangover” and the Doctor from “Knocked Up.”

We start shooting pre-shoots in about one month.

I also was at a Ferrari charity event this week raising money for a hospital being built by Ferrari in Haiti. I announced that night the newest Autobot to join Transformers: the Ferrari 458 Italia.

I also want to thank everyone on this site that donated to the Make -A-Wish charity. We raised $20,000 which I will personally be matching. This is a great charity where they make wishes come true for kids who are very ill. We have had many Kids from Make-A-Wish visit us on our Transformers sets and this time we will be posting video of they’re visits on Transformers 3.

Michael Bay

How do you feel about Malkovich and McDormand joining the crew? Any people who hate Transformers but who’ll now give it a watch because of their involvment?

Nina Jacobson talks sci-fi – The Hunger Games and The Dominion

Posted by LiveFor on March 16, 2010

Producer Nina Jacobson has been talking to ComingSoon about some cool sounding Sci-Fi films she is working on.

The Hunger Games – Katniss is a 16-year-old girl living with her mother and younger sister in the poorest district of Panem, the remains of what used be the United States. Long ago the districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, “The Hunger Games.” The terrain, rules, and level of audience participation may change but one thing is constant: kill or be killed. When her sister is chosen by lottery, Katniss steps up to go in her place.

“The author (Suzanne Collins) is adapting it herself and she is writing away as we speak so I’m very excited about that.” said Jacobson.

Lionsgate is targeting a 2011 release for the film. “[The studio] has been incredibly gonzo about having the movie. We’re getting the script in and our goal is we hope to attach a director late spring and make the movie in the fall for release anytime fall ’11 or later. But that’s if everything goes perfectly on the script. If we take more time on the script, we’ll just go a little bit later. But our hope is to be making this movie in the fall,” she explained.

Check out The Hunger Games site.

The Dominion – A sci-fi thriller which centers on a human who is chosen to command an army’s first-ever platoon of robotic soldiers.

“It’s a great really interesting subject matter,” said Jacobson. “It’s been very educational for me actually to learn all about military robotics. My writer’s actually about to turn the script in to the studio in the next couple of days and hopefully we’ll start looking for directors soon.”

Both of those films sound excellent. I’ll keep you posted on their development.

Spike Jonze’s I’m Here – Our search for the Absolut screening

Posted by LiveFor on February 28, 2010

My Wife and I were lucky enough to be invited to a special screening of Spike Jonze’s new short film presented by Absolut Vodka. It recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. A splendid night and a great little movie. My Wife kindly wrote about the experience so now over to her.

‘I’m Here’ it is called but we couldn’t find out where Here was! We had arrived at our destination; courtesy of the Sat Nav but felt it was lying to us given the fact that we were just in the middle of a road with little idea of where to go next. Driving on we came across an NCP car park and promptly parked the car in order to peruse our surroundings. Leaving the comfort of our car we stepped out into the cold, damp night air in search of clues as to the whereabouts of the venue.

Hand in hand we began our search through the unfamiliar territory, partygoers and revellers alike adding to the buzz and surreal feel of the evening. Like two private detectives we eventually stumbled upon a very strong lead. Looking up to the top of the multi storey car park we noticed something strange was afoot. The top floor appeared to be shrouded in secrecy with strange moving silhouettes within. Curious, we quickly returned to our car and began the climb to the top floor. We had to abandon the safe haven of our car two floors below due to barriers and so embarked on foot up the somewhat sinister feeling staircase. Having arrived at the anticipated level we hesitantly opened the door to discover a busy huddle of people at the far end of the room, visible thanks to the strategically placed blue lights that sent strobes of eerie colour into the vast space; the cold air meeting the warm beams with a haunting fog like effect. Our search had come to a close, we were Here!

Unfortunately we were unfashionably early and were promptly instructed to return to the outside of the car park where we would meet a man who would give us a token. We decided to leave our car where it was parked and take the many stairs that led to the outside. Having only walked down two flights of stairs we were obstructed by what seemed to be a very unsavoury character that was sprawled on the stairs. We gingerly stopped behind the man, unsure whether to ask if we could be allowed access in case that prompted some form of confrontation. The vagrant then turned and looked at us and in a very well spoken voice asked ‘will you be okay getting through there guys?’ ‘Errr, yes thanks’ we replied. This night was getting stranger by the minute.

On our return to the venue we were met with a very different scene. Walking through a corridor walled with bookcases and a bubble wrap floor we popped our way to the Absolut vodka bar. Having secured our free vodka cocktails we then proceeded to take in the transformation. The room was blanketed in blue light with a synthetic grass green floor equipped with strategically placed brown boxes. There were many screens on scaffolding along with a huge cinema type screen at the top of the room. Before the screening began mattresses sprung out of the boxes, much to the delight of the chosen guests and quickly inflated to provide adequate seating for everyone.

The ambience was one of sitting in a park on a cold winters night huddled up to a loved one to keep warm. So here we were, sitting at the top of a multi storey car park feeling privileged to have been given the opportunity to see a preview of the film.

‘I’m Here’ is a story of love between two robots (voiced by Andrew Garfield and Sienna Guillory). It is a strangely beautiful depiction of how the power of love can make someone sacrifice everything in order to keep what he or she holds dear. Even though the main characters are machines, the clever way in which they are portrayed, along with the struggles they face, leaves you engaging with the characters. Yes, the storyline is somewhat bizarre and exaggerated but this does not detract from the emotion evoked. The film is less than 30 minutes long so it would be easy to give too much away and spoil the surprise. Needless to say it is another triumph from Spike Jonze and will surely appeal to many.

Thanks to Marcus at We Are Social for the invite.

The film goes live for everyone to see in March 2010. Sign up at the official I’m Here site.
