Captain America to fight alongside The Howling Commandos

Posted by LiveFor on April 23, 2010

The First Avenger: Captain America film is gathering pace. Chris Evans is Cap, Bucky has been cast and Elrond may be the Red Skull.

Now, according to CHUD, the Howling Commandos may be in it.

I just spoke to Marvel Studios own Odin, Kevin Feige. Running after Kevin in a hallway in the Four Seasons Hotel I got him to confirm that the Howling Commandos will show up in the Captain America movie.

The first group of Howling Commandos was an elite special unit formed in World War II. The original team consisted of Nick Fury, Corporal Thaddeus Aloysius Cadwallander “Dum Dum” Dugan, Private Gabriel Jones, Private Robert “Rebel” Ralston, Private Dino Manelli, Private Isadore “Izzy” Cohen and Private Jonathan “Junior” Juniper who was killed in action after the first few issues. He was replaced by Private Percival “Pinky” Pinkerton, a British soldier – Wiki

They’ll be fighting alongside him in The First Avenger: Captain America, but they may not be specifically called ‘The Howling Commandos.’

“The characters will be there as part of the larger Marvel Universe,” Feige said. One character he would confirm was Gabe Jones. Why have the Howling Commandos in the film and not refer to them by name? Surely you should have that little fan boy nod.

They wouldn’t even have to be in it much maybe just a ten minute deal. I want to know if they will have Nick Fury in it. As we know Samuel L Jackson is the Fury of the Marvel Movieverse (and the Ultimate Marvel Universe), however he was originally the grizzled old white dude with the cigars and attitude. His longevity in the comics was down to the Infinity Formula, hence the reason he didn’t have to go into the future by the suspended animation route as Cap did.

I am not sure whether they will want to have Fury mixed up in it from all those years ago in the film so Jackson may well just be in modern times. Now what would be cool is if they had someone playing the Nick Fury from the original comics so we get to see both versions. They wouldn’t have to mention him by name, just get someone who obviously looks like him.

I am made up that Marvel are using their many years of stories to flesh out the movieverse. What other aspects of the World War II era Marvel stories would you like to see? Who could they get to play the Commandos?

Samuel L Jackson says Nick Fury is not in Thor but Avengers starts shooting next February

Posted by LiveFor on April 20, 2010

While chatting to various people about his new indie film Mother and Child Samuel L Jackson got onto the subject of his work as Nick Fury for Marvel Studios.

He is signed up for nine films as Fury and sounds as if the role will get bigger as the films move on.

“I got started on it when I did the end of Iron Man 1. My foot was on the path. Now, my foot is a little deeper on the path ’cause we’ve got Iron Man 2. I’m not in Thor. I’m supposed to do Captain America this summer in London.”

It is a surprise that he is not in Thor. Even Jackson didn’t know why Fury wouldn’t be featuring.

“I have no idea. I’m not in charge of making those decisions. I thought I was. They said I was in the trades, and I was like, “Oh, I’ve got a job!” And then, I called my agent and she said, “Nah, you’re not in it. They misprinted.” I was like, “Well shit, they need to pay me just ’cause they put my name in it.”

They asked Jackson if he does in fact get to “kick some major ass” in Iron Man 2 and if we will finally get to see his badass Fury in full action? “No, I get to talk really harshly with Robert Downey Jr., but that is about it,” answered Jackson. “So far that’s all I’m doing.”

As for The Avengers how big a role will Fury have in that team film?

“The Avengers is my own starring vehicle for that character, pretty much. That’s not that far away. It’s in February. It’s just February. I’ve got time to get in shape and everything.”

“[He will] shoot somebody,” he said. “I’d like for him to do something eventually.”

“I’m totally looking forward to finally getting Nick Fury into action,” he added.

They finished by asking Jackson if he was happy that Whedon would be directing the The Avengers and if he was excited to be working with him on the project? “Yes I am,” replied Jackson. “I’m looking forward to that.”

Glad to hear that Whedon is definitely on for The Avengers and good to see more Jackson as Fury. Would you want to see a Nick Fury movie?

Iron Man 2 – Who will we see after the credits?

Posted by LiveFor on April 14, 2010

If you are a fan of the Iron Man movie you will remember that after the closing credits, Tony Start (Robert Downey Jr) went home and was met by Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) who mentioned the Avengers Initiative. It was a very cool fanboy moment and it looks as if something similar could happen at the end of Iron Man 2.

To avoid spoilers I have put it in inviso-text (just press the mouse button and drag across below to see the text from BadTaste via /Film. Update: Can’t get the damn text to change colour so apologies.

A 100% trusted source (NOT from the production/distribution, but very familiar with the movie) confirmed us today that there will be an easter egg in IM2. It’s an extra scene, just like the one in the first movie, after the end credits. We are able to tell you what’s about! It’s a scene about… Captain America and Thor! Maybe this doesn’t seem a big reveal, but it’s nice to have a confirmation.

Pretty cool if it is true. I won’t say anymore here, but feel free to discuss further in the comments which are now designated spoiler territory for this post.

UPDATED: The Avengers – Joss Whedon is hours away from directing it

Posted by LiveFor on April 13, 2010

Great news for fans of Joss Whedon (oh Firefly!) but a rumour from a few weeks ago that said he was in the running to direct The Avengers for Marvel Studios could well be true.

Deadline (who are usually spot on with these things) have the news that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct The Avengers.

That means he would be in control of Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), as well as SHIELD leader Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and whoever else they decide to include – possibly the Hulk, the Wasp, Hawkeye.

After Iron Man 2, Marvel has three pictures left on a distribution deal with Paramount before it moves to Disney, and the studio has been churning them out. Iron Man 2 gets released in May, Captain America will begin shooting this summer in Europe, Thor is in production, and Marvel Studios just set Pete Sollett to direct Runaways, based on the comic book series created by Lost writer Brian K. Vaughan. Whedon also wrote for that last one along with Astonishing X-Men so he knows how these things work.

True, Serenity is his only feature film, but all of his shows involve an ensemble cast of people with various abilities so his transition to directing the team of Avengers should work quite well.

I really think he is an excellent choice for the film although it is still not set in stone. Do you agree that Whedon is the one to direct the Avengers or is it a terrible choice? Who else should they have on the team?

The Avengers is due out in May 2012.

UPDATE: Variety have picked up on the news that Whedon is in final negotiations to direct and if it does go ahead he will also rework the screenplay by screenwriter Zak Penn.

It will be nice if this all happens. Now another question – if he could bring in some of his crew what characters would you like to see the following play?

Nathan Fillion – Neil Patrick Harris – Charisma Carpenter – Felicia Day – Summer Glau

Iron Man 2 – New trailer. They’ve got the briefcase suit!

Posted by LiveFor on March 8, 2010

“If you could make God bleed, people would cease to believe in him.”

More Downey Jr as Stark, more Rourke as Whiplash, more Cheadle as War Machine, more Johansson as Black Widow, more suits, more robots and it just looks awesome.

Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment present the highly anticipated sequel to the blockbuster film based on the legendary Marvel Super Hero Iron Man, reuniting director Jon Favreau and Oscar® nominee Robert Downey Jr. In Iron Man 2, the world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), and James Rhodey Rhodes (Don Cheadle) at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.

Due out on 7th May 2010.

Thor – Samuel L Jackson is in it, but no one has told him

Posted by LiveFor on January 26, 2010

Samuel L Jackson was Nick Fury in Iron Man and the forthcoming sequel. The character is also set to appear in Captain America and The Avengers film. However, after Iron Man 2 he is set to appear in Thor and the cast lists show Samuel L Jackson.

However, when speaking to MTV he mentioned that he still hasn’t been told about when and where.

“Nobody’s told me anything,” Jackson laughed when asked about the “Thor” role. “I was reading the trades last week and I saw the cast list. My name was in it, so maybe I am doing something that I don’t know about and I’ll hear about it soon.”

Jackson confessed that he’s heard very little about the plan for his character ever since the Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainment.

“I don’t know what’s going on,” he said. “Since Disney’s bought the franchise, I have no idea what Marvel told them or even if my deal with Marvel is still valid.”

Even so, he said he’s confident that Fury can fit into the world established by Branagh’s “Thor.”

“It all depends on where they find him,” he said. “If they’re dealing with that particular timeline… Hey, they’re shooting it in Santa Fe, it’s not like they’re shooting it in Norway.”

How crazy is that. He had to read about it in the trades! Sounds to me as if it has all been set up and the different people have spoken about it and signed it off without actually giving him a call.

Imagine if his schedule wasn’t clear and he couldn’t do it. They’d have to get the Hoff in again.

Cold Space – Samuel L Jackson’s new sci-fi comic book

Posted by LiveFor on January 25, 2010

It is not the first time Samuel L Jackson has appeared in a comic book. He was the basis for The Ultimates version of Nick Fury (which led to him being Nick Fury in the Iron Man movie) and now his likeness is in a new comic called Cold Space. This time he has co-written it with Eric Calderon and art by Jeremy Rock, to be published in April by Boom! Studios.

Calderon and Jackson worked on Afro Samurai and this comic sounds cool – It follows the man character, an on-the-run-outlaw crashlanded on a planet in the middle of a civil war.

Iron Man 2 – Trailer featuring War Machine, Whiplash and so much more

Posted by LiveFor on December 17, 2009

Finally the trailer for Iron Man 2 is out and it is chock full of awesome. We get to see Robert Downey Jr being cheeky as Stark, Garry Shandling as a congressman type, Gwyneth Paltrow is still the put upon Pepper, Mickey Rourke does a mirror image of Stark building the Whiplash weapons, dancing girls, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury, Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer and Don Cheadle as War Machine.

It is at the end that you see War Machine and Stark fighting what appear to be either more men in Iron Man style armour or droids with the familiar chest light.

There is also a quick shot of Starks chest with the reactor in it and what appear to be circuit type veins around it (above). Maybe the extremis virus? This was a thing that happened in the comics where Stark basically became a super computer and could link into satellites, remote control numerous Iron Man suits and stuff like that.

It also looks as if Tony Stark will be getting a new suit of armour. The photo above shows him with War Machine and notice the triangular chest plate – does that make it Mark IV or Mark V? I’ve lost track.

Have a watch of the trailer and let me know what you think of it.

Jon Favreau is not directing The Avengers

Posted by LiveFor on October 14, 2009

jonfavreauJon Favreau spoke to MTV and confirmed that Incredible Hulk star Edward Norton won’t be appearing in Iron Man 2 and that Favreau won’t be directing The Avengers, the filmmaker shared some thoughts on his approach to making the Marvel movies all tie together.

“We want to reinforce a lot of the stuff we started to tip off,” Favreau told MTV News. “‘The Avengers’ is a much larger concern for Marvel and Kevin Feige, who runs Marvel. They’re going to be doing ‘Thor’ and ‘Captain America,’ and the way we might start to tease those things in this movie, some of it is stuff that we’ve discussed [and] some of the stuff you do last-minute as you figure out how that stuff is coming together.”

“It’s an evolving, amorphous thing,” he explained. “If we decide and commit too early, the secret always gets out.”

Case in point: the post-credits cameo by Sam Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. chief Nick Fury at the end of “Iron Man.” Favreau and the studio went so far to keep the scene a secret that it was even left out of early screenings of the film for press. However, the secret still managed ot get out well before the film premiered.

“As soon as we shot the Nick Fury thing—we had a closed set and nobody was supposed to know about it—a week later somehow it was all over the internet,” said Favreau. “It’s a little bit of a cat-and-mouse game.”

As far as his more direct involvement in “The Avengers” goes, Favreau flat-out denied rumors that he’d direct the superhero team-up extravaganza.

“They’ll have to [find a different director], because I’m not going to be available,” he explained. “It’s something I’m being the executive producer on, so I’ll definitely have input and a say.”

“It’s going to be hard, because I was so involved in creating the world of Iron Man and Iron Man is very much a tech-based hero, and then with ‘Avengers’ you’re going to be introducing some supernatural aspects because of Thor,” he continued. “How you mix the two of those works very well in the comic books, but it’s going to take a lot of thoughtfulness to make that all work and not blow the reality that we’ve created.”

Favreau also confessed that his focus on a single member of “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes” might not be the best fit for the team-up film.

“That’s why it’s good that you have the guys from Marvel like Kevin Feige, who knows the books well and has been involved with the making of all the movies, and he’ll be very involved with ‘Thor’ and ‘Cap,'” said Favreau. “You need somebody who has the perspective of all the different franchises to bring them together. I have the myopic vision of just knowing and loving Iron Man.”
